On today's research list:
🪡 Gathering as many screenshots as physically possible of every angle of the piece
🪡 looking around at patterns or templates that might already exist to cut down on work time
🪡 Comparing files and fabrics, bookmarking or jotting down links
🪡 Calculating how many yards of fabric or materials needed (my brain doesn't want to math today)
🪡 Guestimating how long it will take me to make each item
🪡 Averaging how much paint, how many beads, how much thread will be used
🪡 Finally - putting this together in a manageable initial quote to send to the client

Quick little update! Been working on something in the background for @multiversegeekman (and it was literally in the background) Since it was a surprise for him, it's been a slow burner, using every 5 mins I could find where he wasn't in the workshop!
Favorite characters: Stitch and Ahsoka. So we made him a reversible 80s bomber style jacket (with our own tweaks of course)
Patches bought on Etsy - with the exception of "Tano" on the back. They were hand embroidered using a technique I'm mastering for another client
Ahsoka side: recycled suede and faux leather from stash. Hand painted sleeves with Angelus leather paint. Hand embroidered "Tano" in the style of the Ahsoka series. Patch bought on etsy
Stitch side: upcycled light blue embossed quilt. Piping hand made from stash. Velcro close pockets and patches bought on etsy.

Some chill Sunday detail taping today.
Weather is a bit rubbish for spraying unfortunately, so we're switching between builds getting a lot of the details out of the way.
This Blue Beetle build does have a lot of detail in it which needs to be prepped differently to the rest of the armour
As it has been printed on FDM not resin, the hexagons aren't QUITE as crisp as I would like - but they can be made good with a bit of time and patience.
Once they're taped off, these pieces need another coat of filler primer and sanding. Then we'll focus on the hexagons before taping the inverse as they are a different color base to the rest of the piece

Starting to work on some props for the Schumacherverse, starting with the Forever Batarang.
Everyone makes and preps props/prints differently. But all makers will agree - prep is EVERYTHING. And this Batarang needs to be pretty damn smooth. So, before even looking at the filler primer it's sanding, then more sanding. Then a UV cure resin coat to fill in any imperfections, and more sanding.
Then we'll get out the filler primer and go again.
Painting doesn't take long - it's the prep that takes the longest!

Got the airbrush out for the final touches of Sarah Sanderson, who is going to her new home literally as soon as she dries - right in time for Halloween!
The aim for this was to keep the weathering subtle. Think oily stains, dull fabrics, sun bleaching and sweat stains. So the heaviest layers of paint went under the arms, around the back, on the edges of the stay where someone would keep pulling it down. Then on the top of the bustle and finally the hem of the skirts where it would drag through the dirt.
Used layers of Army Painter Warpaints in Corpse Pale and Kobold Skin, then a dusting of Citidel base in XV-89. Finished off with a blend of Ben Nye Grime fx powders in Ash, Dirt brown and Grit

Stage 2
Taking advantage of the weather today and spraying outside. Stage 2 of the process for Blue Beetle - the first coat of filler primer. Dust it, wait a few seconds, first layer. By the time I've posted this video it will be dry enough for a second layer.
At this point it will not be smooth. There will be lots of lines still, but we don't want to over fill and either not dry properly or run the risk of not being able to sand it back nicely.
As with everything - better not to rush
That being said - if you accidentally catch spots (like I did here when one fell over) or you spray too much, it will be sanded back at this stage.

Today, we're on the weathering train.
Breakdown of costumes can make such a difference especially when considering the context the costume will be in.
Every single edge of this Sarah Sanderson is going to be frayed first - using a mix of files and graters.
After that the whole costume will get aged with paint and Ben Nye dirt powders.

Here's step 1 in the sanding and painting process for Blue Beetle we're currently working on. The print farm is on overdrive and we're nearly there.
Usually, we would print, sand, prime, paint and seal each piece individually as it comes off the print bed. This one is going to be different because of the final paint job. So we are getting all the armour to the same stage of base coating before touching any colour
