Hello, firstly I would like to introduce myself. My name is Jayne Southall, I am a wife, mother, nanna, business owner, college lecturer and an animal lover. I raise money for various charities and causes.
Whilst undertaking my course, one task was to explain what makes a good celebrant. What were the examiners looking for I asked myself? Good writing skills, able to spell, confident in talking to large gatherings? No, I thought, all very helpful but my answer came from my heart. For me, it's about appreciating, experiencing and celebrating life. I've had children and enjoyed the wonder of their naming ceremonies, I've been married and embraced the feeling of togetherness, I've been divorced too, and that can be celebrated as the close of one chapter and the opening of another. Death is a fact of life, a sad event but the life story of the person who has left this world should be acknowledged and celebrated. Whether a family member or the next door neighbour, they were a part of our lives, a part of us.
To conclude, being a good celebrant is about experiencing, dealing with and understanding powerful emotions that we endure throughout our lives. I have felt joy, pain and sadness and it will be my absolute honour to share your day, share your celebration, be involved in your emotions and relay them to a gathering of guests.
My answers were awarded with a distinction, great yes, but more importantly I know and you will appreciate that my focus is on care and compassion and stepping inside the emotions of my clients to make the ceremony perfect.
