I played the classic "Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)" by the fabulous Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel recently and although it's not the easiest song to mix into, I definitely had to work the jog wheels to mix out of it, hence regridding it this morning to make my life a little easier next time! It's either 71 or 142bpm depending on how you feel and I've very slightly reduced the length of the breaks in the song to be bang on the grid too.

I need this rather unusual track for the weekend and it would be rude not to tidy it up a little bit so that I can mix in and out of it, all whilst someone is probably asking me to play Dancing Queen.

Here's "In Zaire" by Johnny Wakelin, locked to a tight 100bpm grid. You may never need it, but if you do, you can even drop some little loop samples of it into your outgoing track to tease this one in. I think I'll be doing exactly that.

I had a lot of fun with my regrid of Black Betty by Ram Jam at a recent gig. Not only is the drum intro very loopable, but so is the first vocal. Mine's a solid 120bpm with a tight grid enabling you to mix in and out much more easily.

Lust For Life by Iggy Pop featured on my wedding playlist for last night and it was a prime candidate for a little regrid treatment. It went down a storm and the solid 100bpm has a really lively feel with a nice loopable intro.

I was digging through virtual crates at the weekend and came across Real Gone Kid by Deacon Blue. Great song, slightly awkward into and a grid that's all over the place as the song progresses, so I decided to do something about all those things. Here's a solid 130bpm version with a short intro borrowed from the 12" version that makes looping it in that little bit easier.

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Yacht Rock and Christopher Cross managed to bring a bit of Post-Disco to the genre with Ride Like The Wind. It's a nightmare of a song to mix because the timing is all over the place and the groove is syncopated in key parts of the track. Here's a solid 125bpm version that retains all the feel of the original but locked to a solid grid. Have fun with it; you can absolutely mix out of this with a 4/4 beat even though it sounds like it won't work. Try it.

This song has been totally off my radar since it was released in 1983 but I was reminded of it today. Here's the extended 12" mix of Love Town by Booker Newberry III, regridded to a solid 115bpm. This gives you plenty of mix in and mix out options to play the whole track or a shorter version if you wish.

Sweet Home Alabama, a classic rock tune that starts off fairly tight but soon starts to drift all over the place making mixing out of it more difficult than it needs to be. Here's a solid 98bpm version of this 1974 classic by Lynryd Skynyrd.

Mojaxx recently shared an excellent video of the Fluid Beatgrid capabilities of the new Algoriddim's djay Pro 5 and commented that its automatic gridding of Jackson 5's 1970 classic "ABC" was basically incredible.

Not one to shy away from a challenge, I've also regridded ABC. The song does have some unique elements and interesting fills but my version faithfully locks to a solid 95bpm grid.

Another 70s classic today: Get It On (Bang A Gong) by T. Rex. Yes, I know, it's not really called "Bang A Gong" but it's what my brain tells me it's called when I search for it to play it. Forgive me! This is another example of a song with a lovely loopable intro so here's a version that's a solid 123bpm and tight to the grid.

The challenge was to regrid this New Wave classic by The Waitresses, which by all accounts was a throwaway tune written and recorded in 1981. The band didn't expect it to chart but instead, it became one of their best known tunes. It's an interesting composition as it has a number of missing beats throughout the song, meaning it's not strictly 4/4 time all the way through. I've used a little artistic licence to amend the intro very slightly so at least that's a complete 16 bars. Just take care when mixing out of this song as there are a number of bars of just two or three beats!

Thanks to Gary and Tony for requesting this. Lovely challenge and one that I will now definitely play myself at forthcoming parties!

It's mid-November and some of us are going to have to play some Christmas tunes at some point in the coming weeks, so I've sold my soul to the devil and regridded five proper old-school classics that may be useful for UK-based DJs who need just a few seasonal songs to entertain guests at more traditional Christmas parties. You never know, you might be able to mix in and out of these more quickly 🤣

I've been regridding loads of tunes over the past couple of weeks, some way more obscure than others. Two big tunes that escaped my attention until recently are the 1964 Kinks classics: "All Day And All Of The Night" and "You Really Got Me". Both are now a solid 136 and 137 BPM respectively, locked to a tight grid and much easier to mix in and out. Of course, the intros are instantly recognisable so will be a surefire hit for the right generation.

I was caught out again over the weekend by a song I was sure I've regridded, but no! Well, here it is: Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison. The original definitely has a loopable intro but it's all a bit off-the-grid, so here's a solid 149bpm version that's far tighter.

I've got a Cricket Awards Dinner coming up in October so I thought it would be fun to mix in a little Booker T. and The MG's "Soul Limbo", which UK-based DJs and cricket fans will know as the famous BBC Theme Tune. The original is a little all over the place but with a bit of tidying up and a now slightly extended intro, I've created a very usable and mixable version of this infectious song.

So, who doesn't love a Pina Colada? Much to my wife's dismay, it's my favourite cocktail and one of my favourite songs too. Escape (The Pina Colada Song) is a tricky 70/140bpm song that really needed to be regridded and I used it to great effect at my last gig. Loads of options to mix out too... one of my favourites is to loop the 2-bar intro of Tainted Love (you need the right Soft Cell version though). Try it...

Blame It On The Boogie has been on my list to regrid for some time...and here it is. A nice solid 113bpm throughout which makes for nice easy mixing in and out.

I also tackled a few other songs over the weekend, thanks to some gig prep and their 'must play' tracks. If you're in the market for a little Rupert Holmes > Escape (The Pina Colada Song), drop me a comment below and I'll add it to the site.

I regridded Copacabana by Barry Manilow a long time ago and haven't played it in ages, but a friend and well-known DJ shared a quick mix today which reminded me what a perfect song it is for sunny outdoor events. The original timing isn't actually that bad but with a bit of tightening up to a solid 117bpm, you now have easy mix in and mix out loops as well as a couple of bars in the middle to get out if it turns out to be not as popular with the dance floor as you'd hoped!

It's been a while but I had a request today for a song I regridded quite a while ago. Rock And Roll All Nite by Kiss is a classic rock track that you can drop into a set with the right crowd and will go down a storm. Another song I've been meaning to regrid for ages is (Are You Ready) Do The Bus Stop by The Fatback Band. It was sampled fairly recently by Chaka Khan but the original is still such a funky groove. Here's a solid 110bpm version which is much easier to mix in and out!

I've been a bit quiet here recently but have still been regridding songs in the background. Today's offering is Rock The Boat by Hues Corporation: a 1973 disco classic that still sounds great in a set today. It's not the easiest to mix in and out of, mainly due to the early vocals but I try to loop those where I can over outgoing tracks. You experiment and see how you get on. The only thing to watch out for is a couple of missing beats here and there, so by the time you get to the end of the song your bar counting will be exactly two beats off your grid. I tried adding and removing beats to compensate but it just sounded weird, so just trust your ears on this one, knowing the timing is a solid 107bpm.

Suspicious Minds by Elvis Presley...where do I start?!? Firstly, the timing: For the most part it's a wobbly 112-114bpm but then there's that breakdown which changes time signature from 4/4 to 3/4, which totally throws most DJ software. And then when we get the last part of the track, there's that totally random fake fade before the song returns only to fade again.

My version is a solid 114bpm, no fake fade near the end and the breakdown has been reengineered to fit perfectly in the overall 4/4 grid of the song, so your DJ software grid should be spot on everywhere except that breakdown section.

Superstition by Stevie Wonder is one of the first tracks I ever regridded around three years ago, as a little lockdown project. It's not impossible to mix in and out of the original, but the timing does wander from under 100bpm at the start to around 104bpm at the end. I chose to create a steady 103bpm version which feels like a reasonable compromise.

Come On Eileen by Dexys Midnight Runners is a wedding and party classic, but its timing is a DJ nightmare. The track has three distinct sections, each with a different tempo and each section wanders around itself, making mixing in and out near impossible for all but the elite-level DJs.

My version has been tempo locked in three distinct sections. The first part of the song is now a solid 110bpm. At 2:44 it then slowly transitions in a steadily increasing beat until the drop at 3:24 which returns to exactly 125bpm. You're going to need to practise a little with this song but it is completely manageable when you add some hot cue or grid markers in your DJ software.

I'd really appreciate your thoughts on this. Have fun and let me know how you get on.

I don't get many suggestions for regrids...you guys need to speak up more! Here's a request I picked at the weekend from a DJ who casually mentioned this track and that it would be great to be regridded: (Feels Like) Heaven by Fiction Factory. Oops Up Side Your Head by The Gap Band has now been resigned to the "silly dance" crate even though it's actually a great song. Is "sitting on the floor rowing" just a UK thing? Does anyone else worry that some partygoers who originally did this dance back in the late 70s and early 80s now won't be able to get up again after the song is finished?!

Here's a solid 105bpm version of the song that you can loop in and have emergency hotcues to get you out again if you need a sharp exit!

Today's regrid was a request to tighten up the intro to Mr. Brightside by The Killers. I decided to extend the intro so that it can be looped cleanly, and a touch of stereo reverb has also been added to the first eight bars to reduce the harshness of the hard stereo panning of the guitar intro. The majority of the track is actually pretty tight but those last three beats have also been tidied up. Let me know what you think of these adjustments.
