After the hugely sucessful first Watercolour Painting X Summer Flower Workshop in June, and I are really excited to be planning another workshop for 20th September. This time focusing on dahlias.
Without me even mentioning it to anyone, half the places have been booked up already, so please be quick if you'd like to join us. ✨

Dahlia Centrepiece and Watercolour workshop: 20th September 2023 10am - 4.30pm

We are so thrilled to be offering another workshop combining floristry and botanical watercolour painting. I am delighted to have teamed up with local artist Charlie Clapp again to run a day on the farm. Cutting flowers and arranging them in the morning, then, after a delicious lunch by local caterers , the afternoon will be spent painting beautiful dahlias from the garden, with talented Charlie to demonstrate, guide and advise.

The last day's results were astonishing for just a few hours together, so I am really excited for the next session.

Please book online to secure your place! 🎨🖌️🌸

Join us for our *Late Summer Open Day* on Friday 23rd August 2024, 10.30 - 12.30 & 1.30 - 3.30

It's our next Seasonal Open Day on Friday 23rd August and we are really looking forward to welcoming all our visitors!

There will be tours of the cutting gardens at 11am and 2pm and the studio will be open for teas/coffee/cakes in aid of The British Red Cross.
There will also be bunches of flowers for sale 💐.

This is a great opportunity to see what we grow on the flower farm, as well as compare weeds / slugs / horticultural disasters! I recommend that if you are planning an event, or think you'd like us to provide flowers for your event, it's a good thing to come over to the farm and meet us and see the flowers. We provide flowers for too many events for everyone to have an individual tour!
Our open days are a warts n'all event - this isn't an NGS Open Day - we haven't been weeding for weeks in anticipation. You will see us as we are - growing plenty of weeds alongside the flowers! Please manage your expectations!

We ask you to book a slot on one of the tours so we can manage numbers and parking using the link below.

M O N I C A 🌿🤍

I have been meaning to write about Monica for weeks since she stayed with us earlier in the year. She contacted me about a year ago asking to come for a work exchange and I am so glad I said yes! 🩶

She was a true joy to have around, both working so hard and as part of our family life. I'm desperately hoping she feels there's more to learn and will come back again 😂

This is what she had to say…

~~~~~~~
After many years working at sea as a chef, I felt like a career change was needed.
I can’t point out the exact moment when I realised that flower farming would be the right move for me, it just felt right.
This won’t be just a career change for me, as I will also be moving to a different country and  learning a new language! I am Portuguese, but I am moving to Northern Spain, to Santander, where my partner is from and where I will hopefully set up a flower farm and studio. Overwhelming? Totally, but why not give it a go?
There isn’t the same flower culture in Spain as there is in the UK, so I thought I could reach out to a few flower farmers here and ask for a work exchange, to get some hands on experience while picking their brains - that’s how I ended up with Katie in Dorset!
Honestly, I can’t even begin to describe how incredibly lucky I am to be here. Katie has been immensely generous with her knowledge and hospitality, teaching me so much about all aspects of the business, from growing, to arranging to marketing. My days are always different: sowing seeds, pricking out and transplanting seedlings; cutting, conditioning and arranging flowers; preparing photoshoots; or hosting workshops. These few weeks have given me a huge confidence boost and I can’t wait to put all of these lessons into practice on my own land.
If you’d like to follow my journey you can find me on Instagram \.
~~~~~~~

Thank you Monica! It was a true delight to have you here. We miss you, and your amazing cakes! Please come and visit us again soon 💚

Wednesday 26th June 10.30 - 3.30

Our next OPEN DAY is fast approaching and the garden is now in full bloom, so we are really looking foward to welcoming you all! It's the perfect opportunity to see what happens on the flower farm and if you are planning a wedding in the summer months, it's great to come and see what we grow.

As always we will have two walks around the flowers at 11am and 2pm. We ask you to book these online (they are free) so that we can manage numbers, and we will have plenty of refreshments (tea, coffee and some excellent cakes!), bunches of flowers for sale, plants etc etc.
All money from the refreshments will be donated to The British Red Cross who we always support at our open days, providing valuable funds for their disaster relief work.

Looking forwad to seeing you then!

I have wanted to run a floristry/artist workshop for aaaaages but it's taken time to find the right person to collaborate with! Charlie is AMAZING! So talented and a great teacher too. I really can't wait to work together and I hope there's room at the table for me to paint too! 🎨

Really hope you will be able to join us!

V A L E N T I N E S //

It's v-day next Wednesday! Yes really!

We have some utterly gorgous british blooms that are going to really WOW your loved one, so head over to our (new!) website and place your order NOW!!

We are only taking very limited orders this year, so don't delay!

We truly believe that flowers do not need to cost the earth, or the enviroment. Seasonal flowers in February are not easy, and some of our British blooms that will be in our BEAUTIFUL bouquets next week will have come from heated glasshouses, but those glasshouses are heated by biomass rather than oil/gas, and the flowers won't have been flown half way around the world.
Roses in February are NOT seasonal and will come with a very heavy environmental footprint.

https://dorsetflowerco.com/collections/valentines-gifts-and-bouquets

There's a lot more information below about the CO2 footprint of flowers below if you're interested....

💚💚💚💚💚💚💚

Research by Rebecca Swin (done at the University of Lancaster in 2017) calculated the carbon footprint of Dutch, Kenyan and British bouquets:

A Dutch and Kenyan bouquet that included 5 roses, 3 lilies and 3 gypsophila equalled 31.132kg/CO2 (Kenya) and 32.252Kg/CO2 (Dutch).

An equivalent bouquet using British alternatives with 5 snapdragon, 3 lilies and 3 alstroemeria totted up 3.287Kg/CO2. That’s 10% of the carbon emissions of the imported bouquets!

A locally grown bouquet using 15 stems of outdoor grown flowers had a carbon footprint of 1.71kg/CO2.

For Context:
One banana – 0.11g CO2
Christmas Turkey dinner with vegetables for 6 people – 19kg CO2
Flying to Paris from London in economy class – 58kg CO2 per passenger.

I came across these amazing photos on my old camera the other day, from a photoshoot I helped out with early on in my flower days with at . Probably 2018 or so....
Just LOOK at those colours! Aren't they incredible? All grown by Charlie Ryrie who remains my number 1 inspiration 💚🩷🧡💛💜🩵.
I can't remember the model, so I can't tag her, but feel free to tag her in if you do.

G R E E N F U N E R A L S //

Creating funeral flowers is such an honour 💚. This is a coffin spray made entirely with materials grown in the south west. At least 80% of the stems from the farm. It looked beautiful before I even added the flowers with the loveliest mix of foliages, catkins, little blossoms, and berries. Some precious winter grown blooms (paper whites, heather, hyacinths, alstromeria and stocks) coming from Cornwall. Not a block of oasis or plastic tray in sight 💚, made with a framework of hazel branches and moss filled bamboo containers.

We truly believe beautiful flower arrangements do not need to come at the expense of the planet. Being sustainable is so important, but I've learnt it's a minefield of conflicting opinions. Is it better to buy flowers mid winter from a heated glasshouse in Cornwall, or a sunny field in turkey? We might be able to calculate the CO2 emissions per stem (although data is often presented differently making it quite hard to compare like with like), but what about worker conditions, chemical use, agricultural practices and soil health of the grower? Once I start digging into these issues I usually end up wanting to crawl back under a duvet as I am more confused than when I started.

has the brilliant book which has been brilliant in helping me understand carbon emissions on a domestic/grocery level, I really recommend it.

With the help of we have looked closely at our business and practices and through their audit we have limited our single use plastics to the bare minimum. Our arrangements very VERY rarely contain any plastic, and if they ever do, it's in a circumstance where I can ask for them back to reuse.

had the most brilliant series of posts on last week giving a GOOD, BETTER, BEST option for creating sustainable flowers. It's hard to be utterly perfect, I do need to run a business through months where I am not producing flowers myself, however trying to be *good*, do *better* and try to do the *best* is the right way forward.

W I N T E R B O U Q U E T S //

These lovely bouquets might not be what you think a forage on the farm in January might yield! But YES! Apart from a handful of flowers in each from Cornwall, the gardens have produced the most wonderful treasure today. Pink flowering camelia, narcissi, winter scented honeysuckle, p***y willow, catkins, ivy berries, sarcocca.... All 100% SW British and the vast majority from here.

I have a few events this week so it's been wonderful to be in the workshop and studio again, and out snipping away in the garden.

There's also been lots of valentine's prep going on here....

Anyone fancy gorgeous British flowers for v-day ❤️? We will have beautiful bouquets and bunches of tulips paired with scented foliages, twiggy bits and heavenly narcissus.
They will be ready to order later this week. I'm only taking limited orders so you'd better start dropping hints!

Happy 2024!

Posy and I are freshly back to work today after a wonderfully refreshing break over Christmas. I am full of ideas for 2024 and super excited for all the events already in the calendar for this year.

One of the biggest changes that we are making for 2024 is that we will no longer be delivering bouquets of flowers locally each week. I am really sad to have made this decision, but this side of the business hasn't been working for us for a while. We will still take orders and deliver bouquets for Valentine's Day and Mother's Day, and through the garden flower season bouquets will be available to collect from the farm.

Going forward we will be focusing on weddings, events and workshops. All of which we absolutely love providing and hosting. There will also be our seasonal open days with the first one at Easter (more on these to follow later in the week).

Plenty to crack on with and we can't wait for the garden too fill up with flowers again🌷🌷🌷.

🧡 We had a wonderful turn out for our autumn Open Day! 🧡

Thank you so much to everyone who came along to our Open Day last month. We were delighted to show more than 50 visitors around the farm on the garden tours. Despite Storm Babet in the forecast, we were lucky with blue skies and warm sunshine as we enjoyed the autumn flowers in the gardens.

We had a wonderful range of people come - long term customers, new customers, potential wedding couples, former wedding couples, keen gardeners, budding flower farmers, babies and children. You can imagine there was a lot of chatter over coffee and Amanda's amazing brownies!

As the farm season draws to a close for 2023, it was a great opportunity to show everyone around the farm and talk through our processes as we start to put the gardens to bed for the winter.

We raised a fabulus £126 for The British Red Cross, supporting people in crisis, through our tea/coffee and cakes. Thank you so much for supporting this great cause.

Do keep your eyes open for the Spring Open Day, usually held around May. The date will be announced soon.
