"Aviva Studios, home of Factory International [ Manchester International Festival ], is a landmark new cultural space for Manchester and the world.

Built with flexibility in mind, the design of the building is led by Ellen van Loon of the world-leading practice Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). The multi-use space can adapt to host any kind of set-up — from intimate theatre shows and intricate exhibitions, to huge multimedia performances and warehouse-scale gigs fit for the greatest artists of our time. Its development is led by Manchester City Councill, with backing from HM Government and Arts Council England.

Which big UK projects, venues, businesses are owned by Brits?

"Co-op Live has been built by City Football Group, owned by billionaire UAE royal and deputy prime minister Sheikh Mansour; along with Oakview Music Group, co-founded by US music mogul Irving Azoff. Azoff's son and business partner Jeff manages Styles and U2 among others, while Irving has managed the Eagles for 50 years."

A new £365m venue in Manchester is backed by Harry Styles and aims to tempt major events from London.

Music Venue Trust is saddened to hear that Bath and North East Somerset Council have rejected the local community's application to grant Asset of Community Value status to the iconic grassroots music venue Bath Moles.

We believe the council's position that Moles was not of value to the local community and did not contribute to the social wellbeing of Bath residents to be in error. Unfortunately, the only people able to undo that error are the councillors who have made it, and we therefore see no available route to an appeal.

A comprehensive plan to bring Bath Moles back into operation which had been brought together by the local community, key stakeholders and Music Venue Trust cannot be taken forward as a result of this decision. Consequently the venue joins too many others across the country in being permanently lost.

There is little purpose in government legislation intended to protect highly cherished cultural spaces such as Bath Moles if the decision making to enact such powers is devolved to local councils who refuse to understand the value of live music in our towns and cities.

"More than 120 grassroots music venue closures were identified in 2023 by the Music Venue Trust. That is a 16% fall in the number of venues across the UK. Over 4,000 jobs have been lost as a result.

As well as being important in the local communities, grassroots music venues are widely acknowledged as the ‘research and development’ department of the music industry. But the economical impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and associated restrictions, increased energy prices, noise complaints and developments are making it hard for these venues to survive.

In December 2023 one of the best-known grassroots music venues in the UK, Moles in Bath, filed for insolvency stating that the rise in costs and overheads and the impact of the cost-of-living crisis have made it impossible to continue."

A bit surreal, but we spoke to The Times and The Sunday Times about the state that venues find themselves in at the moment. You can grab a physical copy, or check the comment section for the link. It's a 45 minute talk condensed into 900 words, but it succinctly gets across many of the problems facing our sector.

An excerpt from our weekly mailer (please sign up!) proceeded this, which is copied here:
We need to talk about… Moles Nightclub. I’m sure many of you have seen the devastating news that one of the UK’s most beloved venues, Moles in Bath is shutting their doors after 45 years. Much like Esquires, Moles was a breeding ground for local and national artists to hone their craft and take that first rung on the ladder in their live careers - a right of passage for touring bands. The closure of this venue will rip the heart out of the live music community within the city, but it’s not the only venue facing significant pressures at the moment. This year alone, over 120 live music venues have shut down across the country, over 15%. Many pressures are affecting these spaces, which are essentially the ‘research and development’ arm of bigger venues and huge promoters, but not being supported by that top rung once the work has been done at this level.

Please remember, that buying tickets in advance for shows and supporting your grassroots venues year round is the only way to keep them alive. Our MD, Gareth spoke to The Sunday Times earlier this week and you can find out more (if it gets approved!) this weekend by picking up a copy. Head to The Music Venue Trust socials to find out more.
