Amateurism Radio Amateurism Radio provides a platform and community for a collective of friends and music heads to share musical discoveries. True amateurs.

We do this through broadcasting 24/7 on Amateurism Radio, hosting parties and DJing at festivals. An amateur, meaning “Lover of” (a French word derived from the Latin amatorem nom. amator, “lover”)

The true representation of an amateur DJ. A collective of friends brought together by a common passion for discovering special records (both modern and old), whether made for the dancefloor or just wit

h a strong vibe. People who spend their spare time striving to find exciting new music to fit into DJ sets, but have zero interest in making DJing their profession. People that love dance music but see it as a boundary free genre. The world is a bigger place than nightclubs and ravers, but at the same time, nothing beats the feeling of a special party. The more exotic and amateur the better, approached with dedication and love… And lots of close friends. Amateurism, where we measure the vibes in strength.

📍 Amateurism: The lockdown years

‘The Amateurists found their true calling in the strangest of times. It’s impossible to recall just how strange and shocking the feeling was when the world went into a global lockdown back in March 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was a completely new way of living, with people locked up in their homes for most of the day – but it’s one that forced many to discover new ways of connecting. For Leo, his response was to message three of his close friends and fellow Amateurs – Rob Leggatt in Hove, Gavin Lucas in London and Aymen Bensaad in Edinburgh – with an idea…’

In need of a killer new playlist? Look no further, as we proudly present the brilliant selector - and all round special human being - Michelle McKenzie to take the reins of our growing Spotify playlist series. What a treat. Q&A below. Link in bio. X

Q: Hey Michelle, thanks so much as ever for contributing to Amateurism, how has this summer been for you? What have been your highlights?

A pleasure Leo, it was a great excuse to spend some time listening to music. I love a wee playlist.

Highlight of the year hands down was DJing at the ‘last orders’ party. What a party, what a pub! Summer has been great fun too. Dancing to at in the afternoon as the sun shone through the trees was a sparkly magical moment. at the was also one of those gigs that melted my heart. So good.

Summer is officially here. Not due of the long-awaited heat wave, but the fact Sam Wilson () has arrived with a brand new ‘Sun Loungers 2024’ playlist for Amateurism. You know the drilly. Q&A below. Link in bio. X

Q: Hey Sam, thanks so much for this killer sun-soaked-selection, where abouts in the World are you right now? And what do you have planned for today?

Today I am sat at my desk at home in SE London - doing some last minute prepping for tunes for todays party at Between The Bridges, Southbank with and . Next week I’ll be in Italy with the fam - can’t wait, it’s been an eventful few months so it will be good to kick back, relax (and have the p**s taken out of me by some sharp kids) in the sunshine!

Q: You’re well known for being a beacon of strength and vibes on the dance floor, who was the last DJ you saw who really blew you away?

My last great dance floor experience was the closing weekend at - kicking off with on Sunday, followed by a smorgasbord of delights from the likes of , and on Monday. I MISS THE MF!!! I’m looking forward to seeing Lil Louis later in the summer too - I last heard him play over 10 years ago - he didn’t disappoint.

Q: Do you have a message for the good people who follow and contribute to Amateurism?

My message to the Amateurs? We’re lucky to have one another and I look forward to the next sweat soaked, elated, noisy, laughter filled, banging boogie with each and everyone of ya!

It’s our pleasure to be able to share a brand new Amateurism playlist from the brilliant Rebecca Whitney. Link in bio. Q&A below. Thanks Bex x

Q: Hey Bex, we love the playlist, thanks so much for blessing us all with some new selections, how’s your summer going? Have you got any projects on the boil?

Hi Leo, really pleased you like the playlist. I’ve had a super busy and social spring/early summer, and as much as I’d love to fly towards some sunshine, holiday season here feels like time to get stuck into work. I’m still really enjoying doing my Substack, as well as rekindling some passion around book no.3. Fingers crossed for a new draft soon.

Q: This playlist is connected to the set you played for this year, how was this year’s festival for you?

Firstly, thanks so much for asking me to contribute this year. Always an honour and a privilege. Glastonbury was great – it’s always great – although only really my third year back after a big break since 2000. was ace, as was . The highlight though was sneaking into Maceo’s with and .b_habibi – what a gloriously spangled night! I always say I’ll explore and see more, but it never matters because wherever you land is the right experience.

Q: Do you have a message for the good people who follow and contribute to Amateurism?

Kierkegaard said, “Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.” So, keep living forwards.

Hello – and good day to you all.

It’s been a minute (few months) since we shared a new playlist from the … I should also add that this is in no way to do with today’s prized selector, Mr Barny Read (.peanut.vendor), as he kindly delivered this a lil while ago now, and I (Leo) am sorry to say it’s taken me way too long to share it… But I’m hoping I may just get away with it through the power of ‘timing is everything’ – as today’s gloriously sunny Sunday in the UK feels like the perfect moment to: Get. This. On.

Ladies and gentleman, girls and boys, dog and cats – please see the link in bio for Barny’s ‘Mellow Bangers / Sunday Jammers’ playlist. Say no more. Q&A in comments x

Hello dear friends… I hope we’re all feeling suitably relaxed, leaner and clear headed after the yearly indulgence of December… And whilst we know it’s still technically January, with February just a few days away, we thought we’d invite you all to join us for a feast! One served up by the man, the legend, The Porky Punk () himself :: LINK IN BIO

Q: The Porky Punk himself! Howdy Marky, how have you been? Tell us all about your new book The Annual Manual and how it’s been received so far…

Hello dear. Yes we’re all good, thank you. We are happy, healthy and grabbing 2024 by the cojones. Happy teenager, happy wife, happy house..😁❤️. The ‘Annual Manual’ has become something beyond all expectations. The reviews are starting to come in after the initial uptake / Christmas period, and the response has been just wonderful. Ultimately, I just wanted to showcase the group in all its positive, eclectic, goodness, and with Gav as our conciliary, it’s been a wonderful journey of misdemeanours, learning, application and joy. Nate and Radley at Intercity in Plymouth proved to be the final part of the package, providing art work and design that gave the project identity, and most importantly creating the focus on the contributors as much as the content. It always needed to be more than just a cook book – and I think we’ve achieved that.

Happy new year to all our followers (and the others too). Kicking off 2024 as we mean to go on, we have a new playlist from our friend and yours, the one and only Rob Leggatt () :: LINK IN BIO

Q: Happy New Year brother Rob, it’s great to finally have you join this latest Amateurism Spotify playlist series… what was the inspiration behind your selections? And what does today have in store for you?

Happy New year to you all. I guess this is a kind of a ‘morning favourites’ playlist. There’s a lot of tracks on here that I have very much enjoyed playing in my morning sets over the years with a few new things thrown in. If there is a theme I say it’s music to be played played while tidying up the kitchen after a particularly jovial New Year’s house party. The first half is pretty mellow rock and pop stuff with an orchestral loung-ey twist. There’s a break halfway through for a brief mediation and the second half is a bit more dubby and more electronic. Big up to .leggatt for turning me on the the Vegan/Headache track which appears on part 2. That whole album is wicked. Today I am excited heading over to Hastings to play a New Years Day party at ’s pub , which I’m very much looking forward to…

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s the 29th December. Effectively the Sunday evening slot for the whole of 2023, and therefore who else could we present other than the calming, exhilarating and brilliant selections of Miss Adele Carmichael () :: LINK IN BIO

Q: Happy holidays Adele. We all felt so grateful for your Sunday evening weekend sign-off shows on Amateurism Radio through lockdown, they provided the perfect send off every week, so it feels fitting that you’re here with a new playlist for us now – this week feel’s a bit like the Sunday evening slot of 2023. How did you approach your selections this time round? Was there a specific theme or feeling you tuned into?

Aw thank you! It was always a pleasure playing the sign offs, the Sunday line ups were a privilege to be a part of.

The theme was a cold crisp walk as the winter sun is setting - as the walk gets darker the playlist does; but with an edge of trippy excitement ✨❄️

Q: You work in an Artist Development role for The Glasshouse International Centre for Music, we’d love to hear your highlights of 2023 and anything you’re particularly excited for in 2024…

Oh man! It’s an ace job! Highlights were seeing such beautiful, talented people blossom from our residencies - then watch their trajectory fly. Highlights were working with Ruth Lyon and Eliza Hull. Liza Bec and CHAINES -who met at our Summer Studios project and are now working on a magical collaboration with a robo recorder! So many I can’t pin down, it’s a constantly flowing role. We are currently working with Hayden Thorpe on something spectacular but it’s top secret at the moment!

Q: Do you have a message for the good people who follow and contribute to Amateurism?

Ah you guys ❤️❤️❤️❤️ some firm friendships have been made with the AmRad gang, just a big thank you really. It’s such a collective of fantastical peeps who are an amazing support network and I’m truly grateful x

playlist

As seasoned amateurs of week-long expeditions to Glastonbury every year, we know what it takes to plot a route through the strikes and gutters of a festive period, and we use soundtracking to lead our navigation. And when thinking about Christmas 2023 over here at Amateurism HQ, we thought we’d swerve the alternative Christmas playlists and emerge on Boxing Day with one of the ace’s in our pack, the brilliant Rebecca Whitney ().

A gift from Bex to us all, here is a newly-curated jazz playlist especially for today, to add a touch of sophistication to the now well-worn tinsel.

Merry Boxing Day one and all! The OG second disco. We hope you’re still on the upward ascent to peaking, for there is still much more to come (if you want it) :: Photo of Rebecca’s late, great jazz pianist father Terry Whitney – we’re raising a glass to Terry :: LINK IN BIO

Q: Hey Bex, a Merry Christmas to you, we hope you and the family all had a lovely day – and thank you so much for this timely new playlist. What does Boxing Day have in store for the Leggatt-Whitney household? Do you have any family traditions?

Hi, A Merry Winter Festival to you too! We’re at my mum’s house today (Boxing Day) with my brothers and their families. I’m looking forward to a good walk, there’ll definitely be a trip to the pub, and of course there will be feasting. We’re not too good at party games, so the only tradition really is to be together. And this evening, we’re coming home to hang out with our neighbours and lovely friends, Damian and Kim, to tackle that cheese mountain.

It was nearly a year ago that our great friend, legend-in-the-game and loyal Amateurism contributor Shaun Roberts sadly passed away, so it feels both timely and special to now welcome his brother Marc Roberts () into the Amateurism fold with an cracking new playlist for home / beachside listening… And not a Christmas song in sight. Get ready to feel the warmth peeps. Q&A below. Thank you (and welcome) Marc. X :: Shaun Roberts, forever with us :: LINK IN BIO

Q: Hey Marc, we hope you’re good man - and thanks so much for putting this playlist together for Amateurism, we love the selections. As a DJ / agent / promoter living in Bali – is this playlist more reflective of home listening or do you ever play eclectic sets out? Also, what’s been your favourite set you’ve played this year and why?

Kind of a mixture of home listening and my more sunset / poolside gig selections. I try to make a Pikes visit every year to annoy people by the pool with my choices, so I suppose it’s a pretty good reflection of what I’d play there or by the beach here. Despite assumptions that I’m sat all day on the beach with a coconut, I actually sit all day in front of a laptop getting other people gigs - so I get plenty of time to venture down the musical wormhole.

Q: As well as your own DJing, have you got any events or bigger projects you’re working on that you’d like to share with us?

Oooh lots of top secret stuff right now planned for Asia in 2024, so can’t say too much.
Asia is a wonderful market to work in and it’s constantly evolving. Always something exciting around the corner.

Q: Do you have a message for the good people who follow and contribute to Amateurism?

Always listen to everything at least once. Including your Mum.

Good day people – we hope you’ve all had a rewarding and uplifting November out there. We’re doing pretty good at Amateurism HQ, and our mood has only been lifted further by the delivery of this: a brand new playlist from .

A man with many talents, James is one of our favourite artists, whose work is celebrated all over the world. He’s also a connoisseur of great music, with a particular love and connection to all things electronic – from off-kilter pop to underground chuggers and uplifting spacey grooves. And his selection here shares just that!

Please check the Q&A below – we hope you like this Spotify playlist as much as we do :: LINK IN BIO

Q: Hey James, how’s life man? What new projects have you been working on recently?

Life is good thanks! I’ve just completed some new paintings that are going on show at Art Miami in a couple of weeks and I’m currently working on some new ceramic art pieces which are kind of an experiment so we’ll see how they turn out.

Q: We love your new Amateurism playlist - is this reflective of the kind of sound you like to listen to when you’re painting / designing? Or do you lean towards other sounds when you’re creating?

I listen to all sorts of music really, It depends what I’m doing, if I need to think of ideas then I’ll perhaps listen to more chilled stuff or nothing at all, but if I have to complete tasks then perhaps a more upbeat playlist is required. Like all of the Amateurism crew I listen to all sorts of stuff spanning all genres.

Q: Do you have a message for the good people who follow and contribute to Amateurism?

I love Amateurism, It was a hugely positive experience to be part of the extended crew contributing mixes to during the trials of lockdown and great to be invited back to do this playlist, I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for all the music and good vibes! 😎

27/11/2023

We love Vicky.

Longtime friend and sharer of good times and dance floors, Vicky (‘Drama’ to her friends) has been both a friendly face and a beating heart within the scene for many a year. Someone with a genuine joie de vivre and an impeccable taste in music — of which we all got to enjoy right via her numerous Saturday morning shows on during lockdown.

Unfortunately though, during that time Vicky’s health rather suddenly and quickly started to decline and debilitate her everyday life. She lost her balance, her energy, her clear vision – and due to all of these fundamental breakdowns, she has lost so much more. She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

Life can be really tough and unfair sometimes. Although throughout all of this she has been as strong and determined as ever to cure herself, studying and learning all about this big new challenge, and trying all routes from medical to natural remedies to get better. But her situation has only declined, and now the only route for her to have a chance of putting her MS into remission and getting her life back is to try stem cell treatment.

The good news is that this is possible - in Mexico. And the success rate is 85%. So she has a real chance of getting her life back. The reality of this though is that after having already traversed a very expensive last few years of trying to privately cure her situation, she needs to now raise £60k to cover the costs of this treatment – which she simply does not have herself.

Vicky is part of our Amateurism gang. She’s part of many gangs actually. In fact she’s so universally loved and appreciated that right now, when her chips are down, there’s a whole army of good people coming together to try and help her – and we are kindly asking you to follow the link in our bio to see if you can help too.

There is an amazing fundraising party (Dance For Drama) taking place in her honour in London this Sunday for those that can make it, and the link is live for anyone who’d like to simply make a donation. Every pound counts. Please do share and visit the link. Thank you ❤️

Amateurism Tribe

Amateurism is a collective of DJs, a tribe of party people and a family of friends. Formed in 2011 by DJ and promoter Leo Walton, what originally started as a music blog to bring together people with a certain penchant for unearthing rare and special records has now evolved into a tight crew that host annual parties and areas at festivals. Amateurism are closely affiliated with Beat Hotel, Glastonbury, Port Eliot Festival, The Social and The Marina Fountain.
