I keep my workshops to 20 mins, (unless there is an option of letting children try out the instruments at the end, which can then be open ended). The idea is to just give you enough time to fit in the key elements of your workshop, with no filler, just killer material.

HERE'S WHAT JUST A FEW PEOPLE THINK OF 'IN THE MIX'
SHEET MUSIC AND BACKING TRACKS!

"In the Mix is brilliant - great range of styles and the different levels of difficulty for pieces helps inspire and motivate students. Backing tracks also excellent. Fun for student and teacher! Would highly recommend."

Matt Strover

"Great, funky music that has inspired pupils to play confidently and with enjoyment. The backing tracks have really helped my pupils with their intonation. The repeated patterns are fantastic for enabling pupils to learn the pieces quickly and they can really feel a sense of achievement."

Jo Percival

"I had a 10 yr old bored with scales and ready to drop violin altogether before she found In The Mix and fell back in love with her instrument. I didn't need to do anything, just hand her the sheet music and the tracks to play along to... thank you!!!"

IN THE MIX MUSIC: ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS

DAILY FOCUS 19 - RAINY DAY

Every day, we at In The Mix Music will be focusing on a different piece from the BRAND NEW Absolute Beginners series packages.

For more information, free downloads and resources, visit: www.inthemixmusic.co.uk

Today’s piece comes from:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 3 - Open Strings and 1st Finger

RAINY DAY (1st fingers)

It’s the perfect weather to practice your instrument. It’s raining outside and the plucked strings in the backing give the feel of the drips and drops of water hitting the puddles below. This piece is in a slow 4 so count a slow 8 beats in. (And what famous piece of music do the first 7 notes remind you of? I'll give you a clue, you have probably sung the song a hundred times!)

IN THE MIX MUSIC: ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS

DAILY FOCUS 18 - TWINKLE TWINKLE

Every day, we at In The Mix Music will be focusing on a different piece from the BRAND NEW Absolute Beginners series packages.

For more information, free downloads and resources, visit: www.inthemixmusic.co.uk

Today’s piece comes from the Violin version of:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 4 - Crotchets, Minims and Semibreves

TWINKLE TWINKLE (crotchets, minims and 1st finger on A/D)

So this piece needs no introduction. Probably one of the most famous pieces of music ever sung! This is a simple version, using crochets and minims. Look at the sheet music before playing it with the backing track as there is a lot to think about. Try to let your bow flow smoothly and don’t forget to listen to the backing at the end, as it slows down.

DAILY FOCUS 16 - Mountain King

Every day, we at In The Mix Music will be focusing on a different piece from the BRAND NEW Absolute Beginners series packages.

For more information, free downloads and resources, visit: www.inthemixmusic.co.uk

Today’s piece comes from:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 2 - More Open Strings

Mountain King (open strings)

Originally from the ‘Peer Gynt Suite’ by Edvard Grieg, ‘In The Hall of the Mountain King’ is a brilliant piece of music to picture trolls and monsters living high up in the mountains! This is just a tiny snippet from the piece, but a very famous tune and really fun to play along with. Remember again to count in 8 beats before you start.

DAILY FOCUS 15 - NIGHT NIGHT

Every day, we at In The Mix Music will be focusing on a different piece from the BRAND NEW Absolute Beginners series packages.

For more information, free downloads and resources, visit: www.inthemixmusic.co.uk

Today’s piece comes from:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 3 - Open Strings and 1st Finger

NIGHT NIGHT (1st finger on A / D and 3 time)

Play along to the most famous lullaby of all time. This is in a slow 3. It helps when a piece is in 3, to make the first beat stronger. This helps you to keep time and also will help you to not lose your place in the music. 1st finger on A and D are important and they come thick and fast so really try it through without the backing first to really nail the notes. There is only one other challenge in this piece... don’t fall asleep!

IN THE MIX MUSIC: ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS

DAILY FOCUS 14 - STARBURST

Every day, we at In The Mix Music will be focusing on a different piece from the BRAND NEW Absolute Beginners series packages.

For more information, free downloads and resources, visit: www.inthemixmusic.co.uk

Today’s piece comes from the Cello version of:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 4 - Crotchets, Minims and Semibreves

STARBURST (minims, semibreves and double stopping)

This backing has the very cool sound of 1980’s cartoons and tv series. It uses minims and a semibreve. As well as that, it also has double stopping, (playing two strings at a time). For example, if you see an A note, written exactly on top of a D note, this means you play the A and the D string at the same time. You may find this hard at first. Just try to keep the bow straight across the two strings and play it confidently. It also uses a crescendo sign (getting louder). So when you see this hairpin sign, try to get louder and louder, as the hairpin gets bigger and bigger.

IN THE MIX MUSIC: ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS

DAILY FOCUS 13 - NIGHTMARE

Every day, we at In The Mix Music will be focusing on a different piece from the BRAND NEW Absolute Beginners series packages.

For more information, free downloads and resources, visit: www.inthemixmusic.co.uk

Today’s piece comes from:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 1 - Open Strings

NIGHTMARE (open strings and rests)

Nightmare is a short piece of program music, giving the listener a chance to imagine what and wherever their mind will take them.Using a short phrase with longer notes, Nightmare builds on the theme each few bars, increasing the number of notes and increasing in volume, until reaching a climax and dieing away. It is very important to count the rests in this piece. By numbering the beats and saying them out loud, you will help yourself to keep the correct tempo and not get lost in the piece as it is a fairly slow tempo.

IN THE MIX MUSIC: ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS

DAILY FOCUS 12 - MANDERLEY

Every day, we at In The Mix Music will be focusing on a different piece from the BRAND NEW Absolute Beginners series packages.

For more information, free downloads and resources, visit: www.inthemixmusic.co.uk

Today’s piece comes from the Violin version of:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 4 - Crotchets, Minims and Semibreves

Manderley (crotchets, minims, semibreves, 1st finger and semibreve rest)

Manderley is the final piece in this package and is almost double the length of the other pieces. Think about a big mansion or a country house, with grand ballrooms and dining halls, bedrooms with ornate four poster beds and gardens with mazes and ponds. It uses crotchet, minims and semibreves. As well as this, it has a 4 beat rest in the middle (sometimes counting out loud can help you keep time). There is also a diminuendo (getting quieter) near the end. When you see this hairpin sign, starting bigger and getting smaller, that is what you need to do with your volume. Finally, there is a slow down at the end, so there is a lot to think about in this piece.

IN THE MIX MUSIC: ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS

DAILY FOCUS 11 - WARRIOR

Every day, we at In The Mix Music will be focusing on a different piece from the BRAND NEW Absolute Beginners series packages.

For more information, free downloads and resources, visit: www.inthemixmusic.co.uk

Today’s piece comes from:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 1 - Open Strings

WARRIOR (open strings and 3 time)

This piece was inspired by the music from epic films of Greek gods, pirates of the seven seas and tales from middle earth. Underpinned by big drum sounds and a strong rhythm, Warrior needs to be played with full commitment! The tempo is quite quick, so try to feel the beat was quickly as you can and use the 1st beat of every bar was a strong beat guide to help you not lose your place. Also you can count the beat rests out loud which is another way to really solidify the tempo and to help you keep up with the music.

DAILY FOCUS 10 - JAZZY NIGHT

Every day, we at In The Mix Music will be focusing on a different piece from the BRAND NEW Absolute Beginners series packages.

For more information, free downloads and resources, visit: www.inthemixmusic.co.uk

Today’s piece comes from:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 3 - Open Strings and 1st Finger

JAZZY NIGHT (1st finger on D and G)

Inspired by late night Jazz clubs and old detective movies, Jazzy Night is a very cool and laid back tune in a slow 4 (so count those 8 beats slowly at the beginning).
It uses the 1st finger on D and G, so really make sure you press hard enough on the pad of your finger to make the 1st finger notes sound full and clear. As an extra little performance tip, stop the bow or string sharply just before the 1 beat rest, to make it sound really funky!

DAILY FOCUS 9 - HAPPY BONES

Every day, we at In The Mix Music will be focusing on a different piece from the BRAND NEW Absolute Beginners series packages.

For more information, free downloads and resources, visit: www.inthemixmusic.co.uk

Today’s piece comes from:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 2 - More Open Strings

HAPPY BONES (open strings and 3 time)

Happy bones is a dance like piece in 3 time. This means that you have to count 3 beats in every bar and this backing is quite fast. You have to count 12 beats before coming in. A good tip is to try and feel a stronger beat at the start of each bar.

DAILY FOCUS 8 - BUCKINGHAM PALACE

Every day, we at In The Mix Music will be focusing on a different piece from the BRAND NEW Absolute Beginners series packages.

For more information, free downloads and resources, visit: www.inthemixmusic.co.uk

Today’s piece comes from the Viola version of:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 4 - Crotchets, Minims and Semibreves

BUCKINGHAM PALACE (semibreves)

This piece has a very regal sound to it. Imagine being invited by the Queen to her grand palace. When you arrive, you are greeted by many guards, an orchestra, royal trumpeters, tubular bells and even an organ, blasting in your honour! Play this with real majesty and remember to slow your bow down so that you can play the long four beat notes (semibreves). Also notice the dynamics (loud and softs) in the music. F means Forte (loud). The hairpin is a crescendo (getting louder). FF is Fortissimo (very loud).

DAILY FOCUS 7 - DOVREGUBBEN

Every day, we at In The Mix Music will be focusing on a different piece from the BRAND NEW Absolute Beginners series packages.

For more information, free downloads and resources, visit: www.inthemixmusic.co.uk

Today’s piece comes from:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 1 - Open Strings

DOVREGUBBEN (Retro Gamer)

The strange name of this piece comes from the famous Peer Gynt Suite by Edvard Grieg. “Dovregubben” is the name of the troll king. In the middle of this piece, you will recognise the famous melody of Grieg's “In the Hall of the Mountain King”.The fun “8-bit” backing track turns any instrumentalist into a instant retro gamer! The tempo is quite quick so really look at the sheet music notes on their own before trying it through with the backing track.

Today’s piece comes from:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 2 - More Open Strings

FAIRY GARDEN

Get ready to enter the Fairy Garden. With sounds of nature accompanying you, play this catchy little tune lightly and playfully. Really try to lock in to the tempo (beat) as quickly as you can and remember to count 8 beats before you play. Also remember to count the beats so that you don’t play in the rests (the dots in the letter name part).

DAILY FOCUS 5 - A Brief History of Music

Every day, we at In The Mix Music will be focusing on a different piece from the BRAND NEW Absolute Beginners series packages.

For more information, free downloads and resources, visit:
www.inthemixmusic.co.uk

Today’s piece comes from:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 1 - Open Strings

A BRIEF HISTORY OF MUSIC (Open Strings and Tempo changes)

This piece gives the listener a journey through the Medieval, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century and Pop periods of music. The main theme is taken from a traditional French folk melody, Clown Dance, that changes in style with each different period of music; for instance, in the romantic section, the tune is played in a minor key, and the backing track has big orchestral instruments.
The key to this piece is locking into the tempo (time) changes as quickly as you can. This piece is much longer than the other tracks featured in the absolute beginners series, and it is advised to practice each section on its own, before putting the whole piece together with the backing track.

DAILY FOCUS 4 - DOBBIN

Every day, we at In The Mix Music will be focusing on a different piece from the BRAND NEW Absolute Beginners series packages.

For more information, free downloads and resources, visit: www.inthemixmusic.co.uk

Today’s piece is one of our favourites and comes from:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 3 - Open Strings and 1st Finger

Dobbin (Open Strings and 1st finger on D)

Dobbin is a piece about an old but strong shire horse. There is nothing he loves more than travelling from the farm to the village market and back. Listen and you can hear his hooves clip clopping along the old dusty roads. Dobbin is a really fun piece and the key is to count 4 very slow beats. Listen hard to the backing and remember to count in 12 SLOW beats before you come in.

DAILY FOCUS 3 - AFTER DARK

Every day, we at In The Mix Music will be focusing on a different piece from the BRAND NEW Absolute Beginners series packages.

For more information, free downloads and resources, visit: www.inthemixmusic.co.uk

Today’s piece comes from:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 2 - More Open Strings

AFTER DARK (Open Strings and rests)

After Dark is a fun backing track with sound effects from a dark night in the forest. This piece has a fast tempo in 3 time. There are only 6 beats before you start to play so listening for the beat right from the start is essential. It is very fun and light hearted. There are also some full bars rest where you have to count 3 silent beats. This can be tricky to know when to come back in again, so saying the crotchet beat rests out loud can really help.

MY ABSOLUTE ‘NO FAIL’ SOLUTION TO GETTING MORE PUPILS!

I have been using this technique ever since I first started teaching at the London Oratory nearly 20 years ago. IT WORKS!!!

IN THE MIX MUSIC TEACHERS WORKSHOP / GUIDE

In these crazy times, where a lot of music teachers and peripatetic instrument teachers are worried about the support from the Government for Music and Music Education in general, I decided to put together a little workshop template. This can be used for 1 - 1 teaching, teaching in groups or as I have used it so successfully, in schools to gain extra pupils.

It takes you step by step, through the things you can do to really engage an audience and inspire young children to have a go at your instrument, dispelling the myths that classical music has to be ‘boring’ and proactively gaining pupils in the process.

The premise is extremely simple; get in front of children and give them, in 20 ish minutes, an exciting tour of your instrument, a brief understanding of the importance of music in general and what your instrument can do!

I have used this technique many times with great success, (once to literally change a music department from having 1 string player, to having a whole string ensemble). IT WORKS!!!

So click on the link below to get straight to the good stuff:

https://www.inthemixmusic.co.uk/music-teachers

Included on this page is a pdf download of the workshop template,
my musical story free download template with 3 backing tracks to tell your story to, and some other printable resources.

PLEASE SHARE THIS FAR AND WIDE, as there are many teachers struggling in these crazy times, and any help that www.inthemixmusic.co.uk can give, will hopefully contribute to the beginning of new streams of work and pupils.

So DOWNLOAD, like and share this post, and hopefully we can help music teachers and musicians out there and inspire children to take up something new and exciting!

Good luck!

Nick x

IN THE MIX MUSIC: ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS

DAILY FOCUS 2 - Ready Player One

Every day, we at In The Mix Music will be focusing on a different piece from the BRAND NEW Absolute Beginners series packages.

For more information, free downloads and resources, visit:

www.inthemixmusic.co.uk

Today’s piece comes from:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 3 - 1st Finger
READY PLAYER ONE (Open Strings and 1st Finger on D/A)

Anyone that has played old video games will recognise the sounds in this backing. The drums have a really bouncy beat to carry you through. See if you can bounce to the end of this piece and complete the level. Or will you fall at the first bar and it’ll be GAME OVER! This piece uses 1st finger on the D string. Try and make sure you press hard enough with your 1st finger to avoid muffled and squeaky sounds. As with all In the mix Absolute Beginner pieces, they can be plucked at first, before attempted with the bow.

DAILY FOCUS 1 - The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Cello part)

Every day, we at In The Mix Music will be focusing on a different piece from the BRAND NEW Absolute Beginners series packages.

For more information, free downloads and resources, visit: www.inthemixmusic.co.uk

Today’s piece comes from the Cello version of:

‘In The Mix’ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS - Part 4 - Crotchets, Minims and Semibreves

THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE (Score reading, 1st finger and rests)

This piece is the main tune from The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, a piece written by Paul Dukas. You may also know it from the very old Disney film ‘Fantasia’, where Mickey Mouse is given the task of cleaning the Sorcerer’s castle. Mickey finds a spell book and tries a cleaning spell. All the brooms and mops come alive and keep multiplying until the castle is flooded, and when the Sorcerer comes back, he is very displeased! This piece uses crotchet notes and crotchet rests. (Sometimes, saying the word ‘rest’ when you see it in the music can help you to count it correctly).
