It's National Grief Awareness Week between 2 and 8 December 2024.

Led by the Good Grief Awareness Trust, this week is all about shining a light on people, places, and projects that help people through some of the most difficult times in their lives.

The Good Grief Trust is run by the bereaved for the bereaved. They are available to offer you all the advice and support you need, and help you move forward with life tomorrow. On their website, you’ll find stories from others who have experienced loss, practical and emotional support, and signposting to a choice of local and national services.

The NHS website has more information about grief after bereavement or loss, including the symptoms and how to access support.

I'm not a superstitious person, but for as long as I can remember, I've always said "Pinch, punch, first day of the month, no returns. White rabbits" on the first of each month. Apparently, it's supposed to bring good luck for the four weeks ahead.

"Pinch punch " is thought to date back to old England times when people believed in the existence of witches. The 'pinch' part refers to the pinching of the salt - as this kitchen ingredient was believed to weaken the power of witches if thrown over them. The 'punch' part was to banish the witch once and for all.

Saying 'white rabbits, no return' immediately after enacting your pinch and punch, ensures that you cannot be pinched back. However, many also retaliate with 'a flick and a kick for being so quick' - thought to have originated in the West Country. Many believe if this superstition is carried out before midday it will bring good luck.

It was also a common belief among RAF bomber aircrew during WW2 that saying "white rabbits" first thing when waking up would protect an individual for the day.

Rabbits have been associated with prosperity and luck for hundreds of years - with the animal considered the most desired Chinese zodiac animal, representing fertility and renewal.

I'm listening intently to the Parliamentary Debate on The Assisted Dying Bill. It's such an emotive subject and regardless of the outcome, I hope that it gets people talking about their wishes and that death becomes less of a taboo subject.

Today is World Kindness Day. Regardless of the context, we rarely see what goes on behind the scenes at events of any kind, let alone thank them all. It's certainly applicable in all aspects of my Celebrant work - from the family, the funeral director, pall-bearers, drivers, office staff, florists, Crematorium staff, grounds people, music system people, venue people, photographers, videographers, event planners. The list goes on. Thank you to everyone who makes my job one that I love.

One of my hobbies is singing with The White Rosettes a Leeds based LABBS - the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers chorus. If you enjoy acappella singing have a look at our recent competition package which won us the silver medal!

Humanists UK has high standards and we all have to undergo periodic observation from a peer. It's always good to observe other Celebrants and visit sites I might not normally attend in the course of my work. Nicola was great yesterday and I always learn from watching someone else in action.
