A reminder to 2015 brides - All bulbs and seeds for 2015 will be ordered in September (bulbs and sweet peas already ordered) If you have a specific flower/colour theme in mind now is the time to plan.
I have had a few last minutes this year which is ok but for the bride and myself is frustrating if I could have planted the flower wanted 6 months prior to contacting me. I will list flowers next season as they are planted and promise to write more (not my best job) to keep the page up to date. Any one wishing to grow sweet peas for a spring wedding September/October is the time. Germinate on windowsill if no greenhouse and keep cool but not in frost. I grow mine in pots but can use toilet rolls, grow tubes or root trainers. Higgledy garden sells 'perfume mix' Kings seeds sells buy name and will show which is good cut flower type. Hardy annuals sown in autumn will flower earlier and stronger weather permitting, down side if mild winter could have flowers in November so will need to re sow. Make sowings and bulb plantings at 2-3 weekly intervals to gain best and longest flowering period. This is not as successful with bulbs as seeds but look for longevity of flowering time when buying. I have had Anemone flowering since June in polytunnel which where planted in October.
I have found people have been set against a flower and when they come for a 'look' they want all of them even the ones they thought they didn't like. My Son had his wedding here in June and we used Cornflower, Nigella, Gypsy (Covent Garden) & Anemone, all in jam jars. Simple but looked lovely. Less is more !! Hope this helps :)
Any questions pm me and I will try to help.
It has been a busy season this year and we had good weather. We still have loads of work to do and will continue to make it the best we can each year. Our biggest headache this year has been irrigation. We have flooded some beds and we have still had to use the hose for a lot of the flowers but we will not be beaten. If any reader knows all about irrigation I would love to share in your knowledge. Karen

Decided 2 weeks ago to stop cutting sweetpeas outside as the ones in the tunnel give me enough work and what happens, a lovely lady comes and asks for as many sweetpeas as possible for a wedding in 10 days time. Out came the scissors and food and fingers crossed I will provide :-

At last. First time this year able to plant in field. The order from J Parker will be going in today, they have been snug as bugs in the polytunnel but time to brave the Scottish weather.

I should have mentioned "Higgledy Garden" in my last post. Benjamin has a good selection of seeds with a humorous approach to his flowers. He sells at a good price and most packets will have many more seeds than other well known brands. He also has collections and often adds a few packets in large orders. I have sown his seeds for last 2 years and have lots for this year and the success rate is very good. Check him out even if you don't want to buy it's worth it for entertainment value.

Oh dear repair tape for the polytunnel being rapidly used this morning. Order in with Total Polytunnels for re-sheeting.

The time is approaching for planning your wedding flowers for this year and next. A packet of seeds goes a long way and if you haven't much ground, planters and tubs are ideal. If you have a handy man ( or handy person for pc) an old pallet will make a raised bed. The garden centres are full of seeds but if you google the flower you wish to grow suppliers will appear. I am a fan of Sarah Raven who also supplies plug plants. I have not bought these but any plant received from her has been top quality. It is not too late for this years brides but you will not have the comfort of knowing you can grow your choices. Easy growers are your annuals such as antirrhinum
cornflower, larkspur, cosmos, dahlia (yes from seed) carnation, malope, covent garden, didiscus lacy, statice, ammi visnage, amaranthus, calendular, sweetpea, cerinthe, sunflower and many more. A very showey flower is the cleome but a bit tetchy to germinate, I sow these little and often and last year 2 sowings refused point blankly to cooperate. They also have a strong scent which is not pleasing. They are great for impact and worth a go. These can be bought as plugs, which I would advise if a beginner. Late summer brides choice will depend on frosts and protection, chrysanths are great again bought as plug plants and planted into pots, these will flower into the autumn and there are some lovely colours especially for a vintage theme. I have an assortment of bulbs for spring this year and will take pics for those planning a 2015 spring wedding. You would need to plant your bulbs this autumn, so it is all about planning. There are many herbaceous plants for the cut flower garden and again would need to be bought now to allow growth and flowering times to be established. These are expensive from garden centres but friends/family may have a plant in their garden they are willing to share with you. My advice is to spend lots of time looking for your flowers and spend as much or as little as you can afford. With a little imagination you will have an abundance of flowers and no one else will have the same.

Sold out at Langholm Producers Market today and met Nessies Soap's who has promised me some good hand scrubbing soap next month so i'm a happy bunny!! Thank you all returning customers today and I am pleased everyone is enjoying the flowers as much as I am growing them. My stock will be getting less now as I have decided (much to my husbands Joy) to drain part of the field for the bulb and perennial flowers. To do this I am having to lift some of my plants earlier than planned. I have had such a good response this season that I have to be ready for next year and be able to produce more. This year has been a learning curve but I cannot believe peoples reactions to my little venture and once again THANK YOU!! I am hoping to plant roses in the tunnel this year or a shelter as the wet damaged the buds too much for selling so if anyone has any tricks please let me know. I have had some requests for growing next year and I will be trying some new plants myself. I am thinking of some pollen free flowers for those that suffer with hay fever so again any suggestions and I will be grateful. Talking about pollen I have never seen so many bees and butterflies, I will leave as many flowers as I can for over winter.
