🐸2024-25 Season Announcement 🎨

17 concerts across the UK and Europe including our debut season as Principal Ensemble in Residence at the London Handel Festival, a hugely-anticipated reunion with Vilde Frang - and a first concert presentation for our Gramophone Award-nominated recording on Alpha Classics with Kate Lindsey Mezzo Soprano - "a model of what a recital album can be". We're also back on tour with MILOŠ, entertaining new concert audiences with music from our hugely-popular Sony Classical album BAROQUE, celebrating Christmas like it's 1660 with the music of Heinrich Schütz, releasing three new albums on Alpha including the complete Boccherini cello concertos with Nicolas Altstaedt - and other things we can't tell you about yet...

in 1710, Handel was appointed Kappellmeister to the Elector of Hanover (later George I) at a salary of 1000 thaler and a guaranteed 12 month leave of absence to visit London.

When the Elector succeeded to the English throne in 1714, it was the start of a long relationship with the Hanoverian royals who would be among the composer’s most loyal supporters, both financially and in their regular attendance of his theatrical works.

Looking back on our 2024 production of Aci by the River directed by Jack Furness

Composed during a trip to Naples, Aci, Galatea e Polifemo is one of Handel’s most emotive and daring works. An ancient Greek tale which portrays the intensity of young love and how it collides with a world which wants to control and destroy it, leading to tragic and heartbreaking consequences.

Cast included Mary Bevan, Claudia Huckle, Callum Thorpe and Durassie Kiangangu ⭐

in 1732, John Rich presented a “pirated” version of ‘Acis and Galatea’ at the Little Theatre, Lincoln’s Inn, at the instigation of Thomas Arne’s father.

With typical insouciance, Handel subsequently put on a revamped version at his own theatre using all his best singers and musicians. It ran for four performances and the partial use of the English language touched a nerve with audiences. By countering his rivals, Handel had unwittingly laid the foundations for the vast development of English oratorio which would form a major part of his legacy to his adopted country.
