Ladies and gents we have some very sad news - due to circumstances beyond our control next weekend’s outdoor event has been pulled 😥

Sometimes we wish we’d just put on events in the normal way but where is the fun in that? If it were easy then everyone would be doing it.

We are truly sorry for any disappointment caused and everyone will be refunded ASAP.

Thanks for your understanding.

11/03/2018

This Easter we are celebrating 11 years of DIFFERENT LANGUAGE and are extremely proud to have made it this far. We've had some laughs, some very stressful times yet have been involved with some events and parties that Hull can be very proud of. We wanted to document our journey, and there's a lot to get through so set aside 5 mins and have a read through our 11 year story...

The Different Language story starts way back in 2006, when Rob and I were listening to the likes of Loco Dice, Luciano, Marc Houle and the whole minimal house sound. We wanted to bring that music we loved to the ears of all our friends and whoever else that wanted to party with us. But we also wanted to bring something different and original to Hull, and so we put on a series of daytime parties on the Lamp's outdoor terrace. I think it was Rob that actually came up with the Different Language name.

In the May of 2007 we had our first party, and of course rain was forecasted so we spent the whole weekend building a new canopy over the terrace so the party would go on. Our first batch of guests included Simon Baker, Alex Jones, Audiojack, Richard Seeley and we packed the parties out. Our Hypercolour showcase that Easter was a funny one as it snowed so we had to carry all the equipment inside (mid-set) from the terrace to carry on. Unfortunately, after a few parties, due to noise complaints from a nearby hotel we had to prematurely bring them to a close.

So we took the party to a local boozer's courtyard to carry on our outdoor and daytime vibe. We'd simply borrow some speakers, hire an amplifier, set the turntables up outside and spread the word via our Facebook group. Bearweasel and Dan Doran came to play a stand out party in the summer sunshine and word had quickly spread as people were arriving and ringing their mates to come straight away. The whole bar and courtyard was gridlocked, we even had a guy play the flute on the rooftop over-looking the courtyard.

During the summer of 2009 we signed our first music with Rome-based Radioactiva Records and flew label boss Massimo Moccia in from Italy, which was a big deal for us back then, considering it was only £2 on the door. The music would accidentally go off now and again, we'd blow the odd speaker here and there too and they weren't the most legitimate of events when it came to the authorities, the party was always a little rough around the edges but we didn't want it any other way.

We'd been utilising the Spring Bank Tavern's courtyard for around 6 months and after we dug a little deeper, we discovered the indoor space at the Old Fire Station that adjoined the pub. We convinced the landlord to let us use it, so cleaned it all up, installed a suspended DJ booth/stand and hired in improved sound and a few lights. Again, we did forget to let the relevant authorities know what 'exactly' was going on but we were naive to the whole Temporary Event Notice and health & safety processes back then, we just wanted to put on a party for our friends.

We managed to secure the booking of Hector, I remember bartering with his agent for days and in the end he did the gig for £400, a room at the Ibis and a train ticket up from London. We'd not paid that kind of money for a DJ before so pumped the entry to a whopping £3. We've always been weary about admission costs, I don't know why but we've always liked to keep it as cheap as possible. This wasn't our occupation and we wasn't in this for the money, as long as the parties paid for themselves we were happy. Hector rocked it, like he has on every occasion at Different Language.

The intimate vibe in that place was second to none and this was most definitely a defining chapter of Different Language. We followed it up with another incredible party with Anthea on Boxing night. The party was due to finish at 1am but Anthea was still spinning her records to a packed room at gone 4am.
The following year we decided to fly in Minus artist HOBO from Berlin. The party was at the beginning of March and everything was going to plan, tickets had flown out and we were set to party in the fire station, until 48 hours before the gig we got a phone call from the local authorities declaring our proposed event was illegal and couldn't go ahead. This was possibly one of the most stressful couple of days in our 11 years of promoting. This party had to go ahead, flights, hotel and everything was in place.

We somehow managed to convince the council that we will take the party from the illegal space of the fire station to the open air courtyard and place the speakers within the legal borders of the pub. 24 hours before we opened we had knocked down a whole wall, completely stripped a disabled toilet out; to make a temporary DJ booth and drafted in some huge fire heaters to keep everyone warm. HOBO delivered an amazing live set to a packed out courtyard and we all partied on til the following afternoon. Rob picked HOBO and I up from after party number two and he managed to catch his flight. This will always be one of my favourite Different Language stories, it even made it into Mixmag.

We had some amazing parties in that space with the likes of Barem, Sebo K, Simon Baker, Kevin Griffiths and D'Zeta & Basile. Boxing day of that year we flew Luciano Esse in from Italy and Rob had the job of driving the 9 hour round trip to Heathrow airport for the pick up as they were no trains. On the way he picked up Antonio De Angelis. It snowed heavily and it was touch and go if they'd make it back up to Hull in time for their headline B2B set. Doing 90mph on snowy and icey motorways didn't phase Rob but Luciano and Antonio asked if he could slow down as they wanted to make it to the gig alive.
Back then we even had wAFF as our resident alongside Pete Batty under the Sona Sound guise. We got some decent recognition from all the leading DJ magazines and the party was loved by everyone. The Tav was the place to be on a Bank Holiday Sunday. DJs wanted to play for us and we could of had Jamie Jones and Marco Carola play there, and just look where those guys are now. Not booking Marco Carola was probably my only regret thinking back, but we didn't really have the finances in place like we do now.

We even took Different Language on the road to other parties, most notably to *riffraff up in Middlesborough. Them lads know how to throw a party, and they asked us to host upstairs. We tied the trip in with Rob's stag-do, he was dressed as a woman and things got messy after drinking all day. One of the lads accidently took my DJ bag at the afters in Benoit & Sergio's hotel room and I thought I'd lost my laptop, all my music and new headphones. I was awoken by our room's telephone the following morning to say that a guy was downstairs in reception with my bag. His DJ bag was identical to mine and he'd left before me with mine, I think he was expecting me to bring his bag down to swap but I didn't have it!

Back in Hull, the authorities had again caught up with us, and due to sound complaints and some health and safety issues, we had no choice but to move on. We briefly returned to the Lamp to celebrate our 4th birthday with Nick Curly and threw an outdoor terrace party at a bar called Limelight, whilst we planned our next adventure over at a brand new warehouse space over in the redeveloping area of the Fruit market and Humber Street.

The Fruit warehouse was perfect for us, a larger dancefloor, a huge Funktion One sound system and in the April of 2011 we invited Minus artist Ambivalent to play our first party there. Everyone loved it and we then had back to back sell-outs with Laura Jones, Audiojack, Alex Celler, Shonky and Dyed Soundorom. I remember tickets going for crazy money on eBay and tickets been photocopied just so people could join the party. Shonky's music was another level, and most definitely one of my favourite sets at Different Language. I remember partying on with Dyed and Pete over at Deja Vu after we'd finished at the Fruit and then back at his hotel room. We didn't sleep and how he made the Circoloco opening party in Ibiza that day is beyond me.

That summer we teamed up with Deja Vu to put on a huge Garden Party at the Hull University. We looked after the outdoor terrace and invited our good friend Hector to headline. It was crazy. Good vibes and amazing music all afternoon and into the night as Deja Vu had Lee Foss, Darius Syrossian and Yousef in the main room. Shinobi looked after the DnB room for us. We got absolutely smashed on tequila and I for the first time ever put my sensible head on to out-talk Rob from driving us down to London to carry on with Hector at his second gig. He'd of killed us after all that Mexican liquor.

DJ W!ld, Margaret Dygas; who both ended up at after parties with us all until silly-o'clock, Seb Zito, Julietta, Enzo Siragsua, Dejbali and Dan Ghenacia all came to play. One of our best line ups was in May 2013 when we invited Desolat's tINI and Hector to play at our 6th Anniversary. Hector ended up missing his flight to stay in Hull for the after parties. I'm still so proud to have got tINI that summer, her tINI and the Gang brand in Ibiza right now is arguably one of the best parties on the white isle. I actually chatted with her at Underground Club last summer and she remembered playing at the Fruit. It's crazy that the likes of Dyed, tINI, Dan Ghenacia, Enzo and Hector play hundreds of gigs every year but still remember playing at Different Language.

So where do we go from here? Well we'd always wanted to have our own venue, to allow us complete creative control. It would also allow us to continue the quality with our lineups on a long term basis. We couldn't carry on at the Fruit, put the lineups on we wanted to, long term, with just the ticket sales.
In the summer of 2014 we opened Gate Nº5. We luckily stumbled upon the building one afternoon the previous summer and persuaded the owners to let us utilise it, as it had been sat derelict for years. The space had a low ceiling, bare brick walls, an outdoor area, it was dark, raw and in a great location. It was perfect. We got builders, electricians, carpenters and anyone else who wanted to help, in to get things ready to open. We drafted in a fully licensed bar, erected safety fencing, built a DJ booth, hired in some quality sound, installed some subtle lighting, hired portaloos as we had no running water or toilet facilities, and got a generator in to give us power as we had no electricity. I remember been there on New Years eve cleaning the place up, to essentially make it look half decent for when the Chief of Police was to come and make an initial assessment of our proposal. He actually met with me onsite and told me we were wasting our time and it was never going to happen.
After a year in the making, a lot of hard work, a serious amount of our personal money spent, a million and one discussions and meetings with all the local authorities; Hull City Council, Humberside Police and Humberside Fire Services, we were finally good to go with our special guests Tobi Neumann of Cocoon and Fuse resident Rossko. It almost never happened as we couldn't find any public liability insurance until 48 hours before the event. We didn't sleep properly in the run up to that opening event and I even took the day before off work to take a car full of bottled water to clean the floor!

It was a massive hit with everyone. At one point Rossko wanted me to change his flight to stay in Hull and party. I wish we had because Rob and I had the enviable job of dropping them both off at Manchester airport straight after the event. Shortly after leaving the airport, we broke down and spent the morning at the side of the road awaiting for a recovery truck to tow us back to Hull.

Dana Ruh, Seuil, Guti and Re-UP all came to play in the old wharf building. The following year we wanted to go back to our outdoor roots and decided for the club's first birthday to put on a 13 hour outdoor and indoor party, and managed to book one of our all-time favourite producers, Martin Buttrich. Pete Tong even gave it a mention on his Radio One show the night before. Luckily, we got the good weather, it had chucked it down all week leading up to the party. The sun was out and we had a great time, I was playing b2b with Rossko and some idiot away from the party, further down the River Hull decided to jump into the water, resulting in a number of fire engines, police cars, coastguards been deployed to the area. The police entered the main building as the party went on outside and I thought they were going to close us down. Thankfully they just checked to see all our paperwork was in order and left. Martin Buttrich didn't want to leave and we had to eventually throw him in his taxi so he didn't miss his flight.

Guido Schneider, Neverdogs, Onur Ozer, Cassy and Boris Werner all came to play their music and out of nowhere we got the news from the owners of the building that they had a new tenant. We didn't pay much to utilise the building, it'd been derelict for so many years, we just never thought anyone would want it. We had to say goodbye.

We invited Molly to help us say farewell to a packed out Gate Nº5. We were obviously gutted, this was something everyone in Hull was proud of and we'd invested so much in. We had to sit out the whole summer of our 10th year anniversary of parties, during the City of Culture celebrations. But all was not lost.
We somehow managed to convince the new tenant of the Gate Nº5 building to sublease to us on an ad-hoc basis. Halloween was on and we invited Bill Patrick to headline. Halloween has always been a favourite for us over the years. The fancy dress we've seen has been amazing. SMEG fridges, dead celebrities, a suitcase, Donald Trump and so many more. I think we sold half of all tickets in 48 hours. It was rammed. Unfortunately, after food, Bill became ill back at his hotel room and couldn't join us. Myself, and our residents Pete and Tom Gibbins manned the turntables all night.

As the current lease came to an end at the end of 2017 and after some negotiating with the owners, we were happy to announce that we were the official tenants of Gate Nº5. We celebrated with a winter rave with Delano Smith who flew in from Detroit exclusively for us.

And that's where we are now. Over the years we've utilised some unique spaces across Hull, from derelict warehouses, outdoor terraces, courtyards to the old historic fire station. We've carefully selected venues, have built up the right vibe and atmosphere for underground artists. We like to keep the party intimate and everything we earn goes back in the party and we do it because we love what we do.

The DJs we book are artists that we've spent many an hour listening to their music or we've been to see in a club and we want them to do their stuff at our party. And the feedback from the DJs we book is heartwarming, many wanting to come back and are happy to have spun at Different Language.

This Easter we celebrate 11 years of parties and have arguably saved our biggest booking for such an occasion. Tania Vulcano, the queen of DC10, the indisputable First Lady of Circoloco, is jetting in from Ibiza to help us blow out the candles. Grab a ticket and come help us celebrate and party.
