What a busy and enjoyable couple of weekends with singing events at Bluebell Lane as part of Féile na Bealtaine. 🌿

🎶A full house for Sing for your Supper, with an eclectic mix of songs - some local and not so local- from a wide range of genres. We heard the poetry of Seamus Heaney, stories from the writings of Michael J Murphy and listened to lively music on pipes, fiddles, whistles, guitars and djembe drums. Hup!

🎶Another full house for the Traditional singing workshop on Saturday afternoon past where we sang songs from the repertoire of the great South Armagh singer and storyteller, John Campbell.

Many thanks to his son John for all his help and assistance and patience with my long list of questions. And thanks also to Pat Quigley and Clare Agnew for telling me all about Pat's uncle, Paddy Quigley, and his links to Lugancullenboy. It made singing and teaching the Lament for Paddy Quigley even more poignant.

So lovely to meet new people eager to sing from Belfast, Rostrevor, Warrenpoint, Newry, Omeath, Dundalk, Clogherhead, Drogheda, Hackballscross, Carrickmacross, Three mile house, Cullyhanna, Crossmaglen and Mullaghbane. Thank you to all who travelled and stayed overnight. We even decorated the May bush together. 🌿

We welcomed them all to the Ring of Gullion and sent them away with a little piece of South Armagh in their hearts. I hope they return.....

Many thanks to Martin Keenan and Leandro Pessina for the snaps and video footage.

In 2018 when my role was made redundant within a property development and investment firm, I didn't know what my next steps would be. It was a very difficult time.

I knew I wanted to spend more quality time with my family but also to return to music and song. I distinctly recall downloading a prospectus for DkIT as I tried to imagine if and how I could study music with a young family in tow.

3 years later and many song projects under my belt, I found myself applying for and successfully securing a postgraduate research scholarship to study the song tradition of South Armagh with DkIT. I still cannot believe my good fortune.

I am so grateful for the opportunity which I have been given and the support of those around me who have encouraged me on my journey.

This has been one of the most challenging and yet enriching experiences I have ever had.

With one year complete, I look forward to the academic year ahead with DkIT under the supervision of Dr Daithí Kearney and Dr Gearóid Trimble.

Be careful what you wish for.......you just might get it 🙏

What a way to spend a weekend - at the University of Limerick As I Roved Out Song Conference.

Jam packed days of papers and singing sessions with old friends and new on such a beautiful campus.

With thanks to the Irish World Academy for accepting my abstract and paper and the Traditional Song Forum for the most kind and generous bursary.

John Hannon ~ Seán Ó hAnnáin

Such a tremendous contributor to the Irish Language, culture and tradition, yet he did so even though he was an outsider.

He did not come from Crossmaglen and he had no Irish.

His legacy continues to inspire a community.

We share in celebrating his legacy.

With sincere thanks to Dr Gearóid Ó Triombaill and the Oriel Traditional Orchestra OTO for the opportunity to play a small part in celebratory proceedings on the evening.

'It was how I imagined céilí houses used to be, a place filled with craic, cairde agus ceol'.

If that isn't a compliment, I don't know what is!

It is always a pleasure to have Tom Kelly come visit us here in South Armagh and the Ring of Gullion and even more meaningful since he has discovered his South Armagh roots and family heritage.

And of course, he did indeed 'Sing for his Supper'.

A wonderful article.

Don't be a stranger Tom!

AMHRÁIN CHAILLTE NA TEORANN - CEARDLANN AMHRÁNAÍOCHTA

THE LOST SONGS OF THE BORDER- SONG WORKSHOP

SAT 28th AUG

Séan Ó hAnnáin (John Hannon) is one of the most important collectors of song, poem, verse, proverbs and placenames from some of the last native speakers of Irish of the greater Crossmaglen and border area, whom he came in contact with on a daily basis as he worked in his small shop which still stands adjoining Ma Kearney's public house in Crossmaglen. He now rests in St. Patricks Church graveyard in Crossmaglen, but has left behind him a wealth of untapped song in his numerous notebooks and papers.

This song workshop is part of a wider project under the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media's 2021 Co-operation with Northern Ireland Funding Scheme 2021 which proposes to reinvigorate and showcase the unique and long-forgotten songs of the greater Crossmaglen district, north Louth and south Monaghan area, dating from the early 20th century, some of which haven’t been sung in over 100 years.

In this workshop you will have the opportunity to learn a few songs direct from the local singers who have been working with them.

You will be provided with a song sheet including the notation, the lyric and also the phonetic lyric of the song to help you along the way, opening the door to a new way of learning the language.

Come and join us for a fun and interactive afternoon of song set in the idyllic location of Bluebell Lane Glamping.
