What a lovely time we had when we met the children on the Go Wild Holiday Club this week! The children met reptiles in the morning and learned about doves and pigeons in the afternoon. Now they know the similarities as well as differences between these birds; why they were important during both world wars; how fast they fly.... and the record sum paid for a racing pigeon. Do you? 🕊😉 ❤

Answer to last 2: Fastest recorded flight 110mph. Record sum paid for a racing pigeon was for Armando a Belgium bird who sold for over £1.1 million ($1.4m).

Well done The Downs crematorium for a beautiful Memorial Service last Saturday. The welcome was amazing with the Chapel full of gorgeous floral displays, Easter eggs and gentle music. The service was sensitive and caring and the dove releases a privilege to do - even in the bitterly cold wind!
Sorry no photos of the actual releases, we were too busy but we’d love to receive some if anyone there is happy to share theirs with us! ❤️🕊️🕊️

The Downs Crematorium are putting on a service for you to honour your loved ones. The service will be followed by the symbolic release of a flock of doves as well as individual doves by people such as yourselves who want to send a message to heaven to someone they know and miss.

Sometimes you have a ‘favourite’ and Blue is mine. He and I spent about 15 mins enjoying the sunshine and sharing the ❤️ as we waited at Worthing crematorium this afternoon. Blue is so calm and happy in his ‘work’ he delighted the very elderly lady who cuddled and released him to fly with her husband on his final journey. It was such a joy to see the huge smile on her face. “That was so lovely” she said afterwards, “I’ve never been that close to a bird before or ever touched one. He’s beautiful!!!” Well done Blue! ❤️🕊️🥰

Heading off on a release shortly so my shed’s still closed and daily visitors who pop in for their breakfast are still waiting - one, not so patient - came up to the window and peered in to me. She couldn’t say and clearer“come on, open up!” 🤣🕊️❤️

ANGELS

I like to think angels pull souls from bodies,
before pain and tragedy strike.

Wrapping them in loving arms,
pressing eyes and ears against soft feathery wing, so they see no evil, hear no evil
and know no earthly suffering.

Only love, only safety, only peace.

I think everyone, no matter how they leave us, is protected as they go.

And whilst I cannot give you proof, just like I cannot show you the invisible power that is hope, or love…

I feel it to be true.

Just like I feel,
no I know,

that people live on,
that love lives on,

long after the angels lift us up
and take us home.

Pigeons and doves are all part of the columbidae family. They are smart and gentle, thrive in a variety of colours and sizes throughout the world, and deserve our respect. ❤️🕊️❤️🕊️❤️🕊️❤️

RETHINKING OUR WORLD

The other week I saw a group of young students cruelly shooing away pigeons who just happened to be in front of them on a pathway. The next day I saw an elderly woman try to hit one on the head with her walking stick. The bird wasn't anywhere near her - she approached it.

Pigeons have proved they can recognize their own reflection which shows a complex sense of self-awareness. They have the ability to recognize specific people and places over months and even years of time. That memory is precisely why pigeons served for centuries to carry messages over great distances. Pigeons can identify all of the letters of the English alphabet, and they can even recognize the difference between two people in pictures.

Give them a little respect - and kindness.

With winds gusting 58mph along the coast here, I h ad to cancel a 10 dove release today. These two littlest wouldn’t have been going, they’re only recently coming out of the shed and curious today as to why the others all just flew back in and what that loud whooshing noise is… Nothing’s flying though, even the seagulls have taken cover now. I’m loving watching the baby on the roof learn about his environment and gain important survival skills.

HAPPY EASTER ALL!

The alarm went off at 7am today and I jumped up thinking I was ‘going to work’.
I prepared the flowers and the basket, got the dove plaques ready, caught 5 doves, loaded the car and set off for Arundel Castle, where the Duke had given us special permission to do a memorial dove release in a closed off nesting area in the grounds.

And I walked straight into a medieval pageant!!!

Fortunately the release was well away from the revellers and went off beautifully, with our doves blessing yet another young Mum with memories of her baby’s release that she’ll treasure forever…. 🕊️❤️

And then it was wander back through the crowds and enjoy the pageant for a while before I headed down to the river to enjoy the picnic breakfast I’d bought with me.

I may not have enjoyed the early alarm call but I certainly enjoyed the rest of the morning.
To think, this is work!
How blessed am I?
