A BIG THANK YOU to the Croydonu3a Committee and members for their warm reception for my Jingju and Kunqu Opera talk and demo at The Masonic Hall on June 12th! Thank you too for sharing these photos with me! I must apologise for being 'improperly costumed' and looking slovenly if not 'sluttish' with the collar of my green costume unbuttoned! (Whoever heard of that!) Liu Mengmei in Du Liniang's dream offers to unbutton her collar, but to do it yourself in a public place..!
So as a clear apology for this travesty, I am also sending you a photo with my face covered with my fan in some semblance of modesty. 😆🙏

Some memorable moments ten years ago when I gave a talk at the Mei Lanfang 120th Anniversary Celebrations at SOAS, 2014, and performed a demonstration excerpt from 'The Cosmic Blade -Feigning Madness at Home' 《宇宙锋-家中装疯》. Mei said in his memoirs that this was the opera he was most fond of and over which he had spent the most time refining. It is a difficult opera to present because of the many requirements of casting, costuming, highly refined and complicated music and movements. I have never had the right conditions to perform that in full in my near 30 years in the UK, nor has anyone else, professional or amateur, in that period.
However, it's high time that I bring my pared down demo-performance to the public again, especially as October 2024 marks the 130th Anniversary of the birth of our greatest Jingju actor, Mr Mei Lanfang, who had given incredible and invaluable artistic value to Jingju/Peking Opera. So, on with the plans!
(photos: many apologies for lack of record of photographer's name)😍🙏

Hello Friends, I had the pleasure and honour of performing the opening and closing solos of Du Liniang in the scene, The Startling Dream in the Kunqu Opera, The Peony Pavilion 昆曲《牡丹亭 – 惊梦》on 20th April 2024 at the invitation of the Institute of Ethnomusicology, the University of the Arts in Graz, Austria. In doing so, I’ve rediscovered the fine lyricism of these 2 short ‘gem’ solo pieces (曲牌山坡羊6 mins and 绵搭絮 4 mins) which I hadn’t performed for a long time and which I haven’t even taught any students.
It was part of the Institute’s Lecture Recital, Experiencing Xiqu, The Chinese Opera’, produced by Dr Rafael Caro Repetto. Here are some moments captured on camera, which I would like to share with you.

The University of Music and Performing Arts of Graz, Austria, in collaboration with the Confucius Institute of Graz, invite the veteran kunqu and jingju practitioner, Mrs Kathy Hall, from the London Chinese Opera Studio, and the kunqu actor Mr Chen Rui from the Kunqu Troupe of the Jiangsu Province Performing Arts Company to offer a two-day kunqu workshop and a public performance in Graz. The workshop, which will take place on April 19th and 20th, 2024, is addressed to the students of the Institute for Ethnomusicology, Institute for Stage Design and Institute for Drama from the University of Music and Performing Arts of Graz. In it they will have the chance to learn a short kunqu aria, including singing, acting and make-up. After the workshop, the students will demonstrate what they have learnt in a public recital, in which the two invited actors, Mrs Kathy Hall and Mr Chen Rui, will also perform the full scene learnt by the students.
A HUGE THANK YOU from Rui and myself to Rafael Caro Repetto for master-minding this 'cross-countries' music and performing arts project! Rafael has brought us and other Chinese Opera artists to Barcelona before. He had joined in activities of the former London Jing Kun Opera Association years ago, when he was a musicology post-grad student in the SOAS Music Department. Yes, music and performing arts have formed lasting links between us keen practitioners!

A HUGE thank you to The Fan Museum and the enthusiastic and engrossed audience in the atmospheric Orangery where I gave my 2-hour Jingju and Kunqu Opera talk-demo-performances-workshop on 17/2/2024. The session gave us a lot of shared enjoyment in reaching out to things beautiful and for which we have to work hard to hold and treasure!🥰🙏🌹

Hi All! After all the convivial Chinese New Year eating and greeting this weekend, you might just fancy a bit of quiet browsing at The Fan Museum, Greenwich, next Sat 17th, before and/or after my talk and demo-performances of Jingju and Kunqu opera excerpts (2pm-4pm). Do try your hands at graceful movements manipulating the folding fan. You'll be surprised at what you can do, with a little prompting! I'll provide each participant with a fan or you can bring your own. But it must not be too dinky. It should have 28-32 fan sticks and be 27cm long. Here's the booking link: https://www.thefanmuseum.org.uk/events/peking-and-kunqu-opera-workshop-with-kathy-Kathy Hall
Hope to see you there!

Proud to say that my pupil, Coco Lan Shi 施蓝,has been invited to host a stand on the Great Map for a Chinese Opera SHOW and TELL to entertain you and help you learn a little more about this fascinating art.

Meet an imperial figure from the Tang dynasty! Opera singer Coco Shi (pictured) will be in character throughout the day, performing a role from the classic Peking Opera Guifei Zuijiu, giving visitors to her stall the chance to meet a real performer and understand how elaborate costumes, make-up and gestures are used to bring this character to life. She'd be happy to answer your questions too.😀

Hi All, just a 'long range sunny forecast' for arts supporters!
The University of Music and Performing Arts of Graz, Austria, in collaboration with the Confucius Institute of Graz, invite kunqu and jingju practitioner, Kathy Hall, from the London Chinese Opera Studio, and kunqu actor Chen Rui 陈睿 from the Kunqu Troupe of the Jiangsu Province Performing Arts Company to give a two-day kunqu workshop and a public performance in Graz. The workshop on April 19th and 20th, 2024, is addressed to the students of the Institute for Ethnomusicology, Institute for Stage Design and Institute for Drama from the University of Music and Performing Arts of Graz. The July 2016 photos attached here recapture the happy collaboration, teaching and learning of that first large scale Kunqu course presented by the SOAS Music Department and funded by the SOAS Chinese Institute featuring the same teachers, Kathy and Rui Chen, with student participants from Barcelona and UK-wide! Cheers to a wonderful extension of that experience in different directions!

My pleasure to share with you a quick photo record of one of my two opera performance items at the British Museum on June 9th 2023! I was delighted to be using my Kunqu Opera fan again on stage so soon after its luxurious and much pampered display at the British Library 'Chinese British' exhibition for 6 months! Thank you to the British Museum, of course, for the chance to perform with my much treasured fan which can once again delight an audience with Kunqu Opera. (photos: Jessica Hall and Coco Lan Shi)

It was my pleasure to give an opera make-up lesson to Coco Lan Shi last Sunday in my studio and also have her costumed as Du Liniang in the Kunqu Opera, 'In Pursuit of the Dream' from 'The Peony Pavilion'. Coco started online Kunqu lessons with me last May in the lockdown period and has also persisted in in-person lessons so far ...so good.😊
