Zoe Rowlinson gold medal winner in the 2021 competition knows the value of entering, this is what she says

“Entering the UK Judges Guild photography competition was a different style of competing that I hadn’t had much experience of before. However, adding the element of staging and reviewing the design through a camera lens enabled me to look at the design in different aspects. The added bonus of having professional images of a competition piece for my portfolio and social media was also a huge draw to enter.”

Sizzle this summer!

It’s time for the UK Floristry Judges Guild sizzling summer photographic competition. You must be in it to win it and for gold medal winner 2021 Hannah Beckley entering competitions helps improve her floristry skills. Hannah says

“I have learnt a piece is important from start to finish. From planning, sticking to the plan, and not changing your mind halfway through. This stops any styles being mixed and become confusing. Then the checks at the end are very important. Looking for neatness and where glue may be showing or a wire not cut, and if stems aren’t clean. These could lead to loss in marks, so it is very important to check the workmanship of the whole design.

I approach a competition by reading the theme and schedule, highlighting key points such as the theme, measurements, technique. From these the planning process can start. Creating sketches of possible designs and sticking to the one and not deviating from the plan. Next choosing a selection of flowers with differing forms to aid line movement as well as focal flowers, a colour harmony will also be carefully selected. Some material chosen may depend on the theme to connect to the schedule. “
