Y - Yardstick
Yes Yardstick, can you think of a better Y 🏆
Participating in floristry competitions can be a useful way to gauge your progress and assess your skills against other competitors.
However, it is important to remember that your goals and objectives are entirely up to you. You will decide what areas require improvement and how you wish to continue developing your skills.
A yardstick can be a helpful tool to determine your current skill level and establish how you want to proceed. You will be the one setting the objectives and deciding what ongoing improvement, if any needs to be made. A yardstick will help you understand what level your skills are at…

X- Xray vision would certainly be useful when entering a floristry competition and scrutinising your competition entry. However, having a hawkeye and clearly and keenly spotting any imperfections, blemishes, or messy workmanship does NOT need Xray vision.
Developing a powerful ‘seeing eye’ with heightened attentiveness and careful examination of your design, front to back to spot any faults will help you gain extra marks in the floristry competition.

The UK Floristry Judges Guild’s Competing A to Z. 🏆 R.. r
We have had a little fun and put together an A to Z of competing and judging at floristry competitions. This is to help competitors understand the vocabulary and the skills needed to be the best in floristry competitions. We will be working through the alphabet in the coming posts. 🥇🥈🥉
R - Respect for the botanical materials used in a floral design is an important part of competition work. Appreciating the natural beauty of flowers and respecting their individual characteristics by not over manipulating or altering their unique magical qualities should be uppermost in a competitor’s mind.
Respect is also valuing the other competitors work and acknowledging politely a judge’s expertise and help.
R - Resilience and Resolve is needed to persevere in floristry competitions and to overcome problems that may arise. Having the ability to pull through any setbacks, focusing on your own skills development instead of what other competitors are doing will give you a positive outcome.
‘When the going gets tough the tough get going’ is the old saying. If your mindset is strong and you are confident then stressful situations will be resolved quickly. Practicing skills and designs before the floristry competition and being mentally prepared will help to combat nerves enabling you to focus on your goal and the resolution will be success.

L – Logical thinking is extremely important in surprise floristry competitions.
This is when competitors are required to create a floral design from unseen materials and are given a timeframe to accomplish the task. Competitors need the ability to analyse the task, break it down into bite sized problems to be solved and come up with a solution – a great floral design made in the time allowed.
Omitting stress, excluding things such as social media and mobile phones can help you concentrate on clear concise logical thinking which will prove invaluable not only in floristry competitions but in your working life.
