💚 Fly by Northern Lights ❤️

You might think I was lucky to catch the Aurora Borealis from my plane window this Wednesday night (15/3/23) flying from to ... and as a professional liar (magician) I'd be inclined to let you think that, but for once I'll let you in on a secret:

Trying to capture the Northern Lights 8 years ago was the reason I got into astrophotography! 🤩

The first times seeing it in Iceland I had no idea how to photograph the Northern Lights properly, but over recent years I've improved at taking photos, particularly of the stars at night and gradually accumulated much better gear & knowledge to allow me to do just that.

With all the incredible Aurora activity lately I specifically booked a window seat that would be North facing on a night with a strong Aurora forecast during my recent flight to the UK. Unfortunately the aurora activity wasn't as strong as I'd hoped when we took off according to my forecast app.
The steady ascent for the first 40 minutes through thick cloud almost had me falling asleep to the in-depth podcast I was listening to 😴 along with the harsh cabin lights ruining my chances of adjusting to night vision but once above the clouds I could start to see a couple of stars and a faint green band on the horizon by eye...

So I jacked up the camera exposure & pressed the lens up to the window for a test shot (see last image)...

Bingo 💚 Aurora ✅ but those reflections 😩

I spent 35 minutes hand-holding different long exposures through the smudged, dual layer, highly reflective window which was fogging over every few minutes, using my jacket held up against the window around the lens to try reduce reflections as much as possible.

Making it so difficult as the jacket constantly pulled on the focus ring of the lens, meaning with just my 2 hands I had to hold the camera still inside the flying tube, hold the jacket around, but not in front of the lens covering as much of the window as possible, manually focus on the stars and then press the shutter. Then wipe the condensation off the window & repeat.

Of the 146 shots, here's my favourite which left the cabin crew and captain amazed 🤯

Brought in 2023 by doing what I love - making magic happen 🪄 followed by a breaking (breakdance) show in the Maldives for .entertainment then jamming with my fellow performers and then swimming in a magical bioluminescent phytoplankton filled sea 😍

Could have been worse I guess...

Last Christmas party of 2022!

Thanks to SUV Prestige for hiring me again to treat your staff at this year's party tonight!

Had a blast with lots of really fun and creative events over the last couple of months and today was just the same, with lots of complimentary expletives from the thoroughly mind blown sceptics 🤣

I'm still so grateful for everyone's business from new clients and especially all the repeat clients who trust me for their events time after time! 🙏

I would normally cram in a few more events before the end of the year and about 4 in a row on NYE... But this year I'm packing my bag of tricks to perform in the Maldives to conclude 2022! 💥
