Decisions, decisions, decisions! There are so many things to decide on and arrange when you are getting married and one of the biggest and most important is the type of ceremony you want for your special day. How people get married is changing and couples can choose to have their wedding day, their way, so don't let anyone tell you you can't.
Licensed venues offer a legalised marriage performed by a registrar but some rules and legalities have to be followed and choice is limited or non-existent. You can also choose to use your own celebrant at a licensed venue or in any venue of your choice and although they cannot legalise your marriage they can make the ceremony uniquely yours as a wedding all about your choices.
Getting the legal side of marriage completed in a Register Office before your big day allows your celebrant-led wedding day to focus on celebrating you and your relationship.

I had the privilege of performing the celebration of life service for a wonderful lady this week who loved her family, her garden and having fun. Together we created the perfect goodbye. Words like this mean everything!
Love lasts forever and can be remembered and celebrated in many ways. Losing a loved one is never easy but giving them a personal goodbye, memorial or celebration of life is a way to both shed tears of grief and loss, and also joy and laughter. Choosing how to say goodbye while sharing and preserving that love is something independent celebrants like me can help you with. As a lover of people and all our unique qualities, I love hearing from families about the life lived by their lost loved one and the relationships they shared with them. When I decided to become a celebrant, I wanted to be the best one I could possibly be and so chose my training carefully. I had the pleasure of training through the Academy of Modern Celebrancy and received the most amazing support on a course that helps you explore how to deliver the most incredible and unique wedding ceremonies.
Writing the script for your celebrant-led wedding is a privilege and one that I can't wait to share with you.

Last week I had the privilege of meeting some of the amazing staff at BCP Bereavement Care Office when they welcomed me to both Poole and Bournemouth Crematoriums for a tour. What an amazing team of people who work in both crematoriums! The buildings and the ceremony halls are beautiful and offer a tranquil place where families can say goodbye to their loved ones. I felt a great sense of calm, peace and care throughout.

As a funeral celebrant, I take the time to understand each family and their loved one. Telling the story of their life and the relationships they have nurtured in a way that captures the life they lived. A unique celebrant-led ceremony is a perfect way to say farewell to a loved family member and begin to heal from grief. it is also a privilege I never take for granted.
Choosing a memorial for a loved one is never an easy thing to do. Getting it just right is so important and personal. It is something I have often thought about because although I hope to be remembered after I am gone, I don't want anyone to have to tend a spot. I have often said, "Sit in a favourite spot of mine, drink a coffee and think of me" and I have now found my perfect spot to do just that.

Having experienced grief, many times in my life, it is something I have navigated my way through and am passionate about in my role as a funeral celebrant. Saying a final goodbye to a loved one is never easy, but with the right professionals around you, it is possible to feel supported and understood as you make those difficult decisions.

On International Womens Day, here is a photo of me and my WONDERFUL mum. Beatrice Agnes Cottrill would have been 100 years old this year and was the most amazing mum, nanny, sister, auntie and friend to many. Leaving school at 14 years old to go into service as a house maid, making parachute straps during WWII, raising 5 children (including me who she had as a surprise at 41), 11 grandchildren and then welcoming great grandchildren too she was a force to be recognised. Widowed at 55 years old with 13 year old me still at home she was loving, loyal, caring, resilient, and wise, I am who I am today because of her.
In 1992, she was brave enough to give me away at my wedding, breaking with the tradition of the day because I asked her too. Celebrating the wonderful women in our lives is so important, not just today but every day.

Celebrating a life and mourning a loss can and do happen at the same time. The importance of doing both of those things is invaluable as you travel on the path to healing grief. Having lost my Dad at the age of 13, this is a club that I wasn't ready to join. Losing a parent at any age is never easy and leaves you feeling lost and vulnerable. They are no longer there to love and support you and you wonder about who you will become without them. You will become YOU! A slightly different you but one that is still influenced by your parents's love and nurturing. I don't think that I would be the celebrant I am today without being in that club.
