From next Monday (1st November) BAA, the operator of Heathrow, is introducing a £5.00 drop off fee at all the terminals. It was hoped it would be a daily charge but, unfortunately, it is going to be charged per drop-off. Gatwick brought in the same fee earlier this year but is currently only operating the North Terminal. I don’t think Terminal 4 at Heathrow is operational either.

Unlike Luton, Stansted and City Airports the charge does not have to be paid at the time of drop off but uses a number plate recognition system similar to the Dartford Crossing and the congestion charge in London. This should prevent a build up of traffic in the drop off areas and therefore alleviate additional delay getting into the drop off areas at peak times (remember those?). I have registered and opened an auto-pay account at both Heathrow and Gatwick but will have to add this additional charge to the invoice.
