Farm update

It has been a flowery week here at the farm. Lots of florist orders in beautiful colour and gift bouquets.

We are picking lots of new varieties, such as feverfew, thlaspi, larkspur and veronica, it truly feels that summer has started. It is all airiness and froth at this time of year. The snaps in the polytunnel have excelled themselves this year, they are massive - they are slightly tricky to carry. The last of the peonies went out this week, such a short season.

There has been lots of frantic w**ding and mowing going on, in preparation for open field next Saturday. There are still a few places left if you want to join us for a stroll around the field. Booking is via the website.

Alternatively, if you wish to come and pick some flowers, there are still spaces on the PYO on Saturday 5th July. There will be refreshments to buy and people often enjoy the opportunity to have a cuppa and a chat after picking their bucket. It's a lovely activity to do with a friend or family member. Again, booking is via the website.

Looks like it's going to be a hot week, back to watering for me!

Sunday 8th June update

Thankfully, we finally had some rain. It is incredible how quickly the plants respond to rain. Sadly, the w**ds also grow rapidly.

I have finished planting out the first succession of annuals and sown the last of the next succession which we hopefully will be picking in September.

British Flower Week 16th-22nd June
Field visit Saturday 21st June (booking essential, free of charge)

I am a member of Flowers from the Farm which has recently taken over promoting British Flower Week. There will be events up and down the country celebrating British flowers. If you want to find out more have a look at the Flowers from the Farm website.

As part of the week we are opening for field visits on Saturday 21st June 8-11am. It is a chance to come and have a look round the field. I am happy to answer any questions about growing or cutting. There are 10 slots available to book for each hour and we will be providing coffee and croissants for the 8 am slot. There is no charge but donations can be made in aid of St Michael's hospice, Basingstoke. Booking through https://www.headleyflowergarden.co.uk/products/field-visit-21st-june-8-11am

Bunches of flowers will be available from the farm gate on the day.

1st June

Last weekend we had the pleasure of decorating a marquee for a wedding. Lots of bright colours, the coral charm peonies arrived just in time.

It was generally a busy flower week, supplying wholesale orders to florists and lots of gift bouquets. It is such an amazing time of year for flowers.

I am busy clearing the tunnels, the ranunculus claws are pulled up, dried and stored until autumn. This year's claws will be used outside next year. It has been an incredible year for ranunculus, which has been surprising as they don't usually like warm weather.

I was delighted to be greeted by the sight and smell of snaps when I opened the tunnel this morning. Its been a couple of days since I had been to the offsite tunnel and in that time the snaps had been busy colouring up. At this time of year I am planting the tunnels up with asters, grasses, celosia and scabious. Next month the chrysanthemum will be added to this list.

I have started to sow my biennials for next year and am sowing the final succession of crops like cosmos, grasses and cress - I'm trying not to wish the year away.

The first PYO is only a month away. There are still slots available if you would like to join us.

Dates:
Saturday 5th July
Saturday 2nd August
Saturday 13th September

Tickets need to be booked via the website ([email protected]). £25 per bucket. Approx 25 stems.
Refreshments are available to buy on the day.
We limit the number of tickets per time slot so you can enjoy the space.

If you would like to arrange a private group PYO please get in touch.

Have a good week. I'm hoping for a bit more rain this week.

Farm update 17/05/2025

Another sunny week on the farm. Some of the flowers have really appreciated the weather and given a bumper crop. In particular the aquilegia and the bearded iris have been fantastic. I think it's also helped that the iris have less w**d competition this year. I moved them a couple of years ago to their current position, previously they had been smothered by couch grass.

I've picked the first of the peonies this week - coral charm is always the first. The outdoor ranunculus have become more productive, I just need to remember to water and feed them more often.

I have had help to cut back the Cytisus (broom), it will flower next year on this year's growth. It is amazing to see how much growth it puts on in a year. It has an amazing perfume.

There are lots of flowers that have characteristic smells- not all are pleasant! I love the smell of Bells of Ireland and Orlaya, but I know not everyone enjoys the same smell. The outside Orlaya is almost ready to cut. I have to grow all the umbelliferous plants with protection against carrot fly. That's why some of the flower beds in the field are surrounded by netting. Thankfully carrot fly aren't great at flying and can't get higher than 50 cms so the plants don't need to be completely covered.

Hopefully I'm going to get the dahlia that I've pre-sprouted planted out next week. Still need to order biennial seeds for next year - I'll add it to the long list of jobs.

Thank you for the gift bouquet orders this week. As everything is cut and conditioned to order I do need 24 hours notice, thank you for your patience and planning ahead!

Have a good week

Farm Update
11th May 2025

So many lovely flowers this week. Florist orders going out to Linz@The White Horse Flower Company and Sarah and the bee for a wedding and an event. Have a look at their socials to see their beautiful designs.

I cut the first orlaya this week and lots of the omphalades (arginetine forget me nots), growing these both in the poly tunnel means they have much longer stems than the plants grown outside. The spring started ranunculus are starting to flower - they are still short, not helped by the on-going lack of rain (I've managed to not mention this until the second paragraph!)

Planting out carries on at pace. Slight hitch on Thursday night as we had an unexpected 0 degrees overnight which meant the cosmos we planted out that day was damaged. I usually pinch out the cosmos when it forms its first flower head, so I have pinched the growing point out early and I am waiting to see if the plants recover. Keeps me on my toes.

Thank you to everyone who bought flowers last week via website orders and in person at the stall or swan street stores shop in Kingsclere. It is very much appreciated.

Flower arranger buckets and event buckets are now available to order through the website, as well as bouquets and Friday Flowers.

Farm Update

Every time I look round the field there is something else beginning to flower, it is very exciting. The bearded iris are stunning, if perhaps some are a little OTT?

The first flowering spikes of the lupins are nearly ready. I inspect the plants regularly looking for the dreaded lupin aphids - they are large grey beasts about double the size of a normal green aphid. If they are allowed to propagate they smother the plant especially the flower spikes, not a pretty sight!

On to more pleasant things, the wedding season is well underway and we have some lovely weddings to flower this year. We also supply flowers for other events either as DIY buckets or arrangements so if you've got an event coming up and would like to use local, British flowers please get in contact.

Sunday 27th April

Another busy week on the farm. We were very happy to have some rain after a number of weeks without any. Watering is never as good as a good soak with rain.

Every day there are new crops flowering. I have picked geum, hesperis, allium, poppies, hare's tails (over a metre tall), briza and snowball viburnum - its only around for a couple of brief weeks so I've been making the most of it in my arrangements.

I have tried growing foxgloves in the tunnel for the first time this year and I'm pleased to see they are nearly ready, I think they will be a good couple of weeks ahead of the outdoor ones. When picking spiky flowers like foxgloves, lupins or delphinium it is best to pick when the flowers on the lower third have opened.

From the weather report it looks as though its going to be hot this week so make sure you are watering your baby seedlings. keep the frost protection handy though as the temperature is going to drop next weekend - just in time for the bank holiday weekend. I hope we don't have a frost but our last frost date in this area is near the end of May so its still possible.

British Flower week 16th-22nd June 2025

I am a member of Flowers from the Farm trade association and the association have taken over promoting British Flower week, an initiative that was launched by New Convent Garden Market in 2013. Would there be any interest in a farm open day over the weekend of the 21st/22nd June?

There will be flowers at the farm gate stall on Friday and Saturday, or order online for local delivery or collection.

Enjoy the sunshine this week.

Happy Easter

I hope you have had a restful few days. We went out for a walk in the bluebell woods near us. It is was a beautiful sight and smell.

After weeks of no rain I was pleased that we had some although really we need a few days of steady rain. I have been spending a lot of time watering, not something I expect to be doing at this time of year.

On the farm I have pulled the last few tulips, so sad to to see them go until next spring. The ranunculus are still flowering well in the polytunnel.

We have cut the first camassia and I am excited to see the first of the icelandic poppies flowering. They are a bit short at the moment but the size of the flower is very impressive. These are colibri poppies that have been specifically breed for the cut flower industry. After picking I sear the stems in hot water, the vase life is usually 5 days.

The snowball viburnum is nearly ready for cutting. Over the next few weeks we will have allium, iris, foxgloves, orlaya, sweet william, hesperis and as you can see on the photo of the field the peonies are budding up.

Thank you to everyone who bought flowers this weekend. I would love to have some feedback on the farmgate flower stall. We started this last year and have been grateful for support from a band of people who buy regularly. We have been doing one size of bouquet (£15), there is the option to pay by cash or use the QR code (which has been by far the preferred choice). Going forward this year, it would be helpful to know if people would prefer larger bunches to be available or any other suggestions on how we can improve the service.

Headley Flower Garden

After growing flowers in my garden in Headley for a number of years I was given the opportunity to expand into a field in the next village. This is my first year growing on a larger scale. I offer one-0ff bouquets, subscriptions, DIY wedding buckets and provide weekly flowers to Headley community shop (on a Thursday) and have just started attending Newbury Farmers Market. I provide fresh, local, seasonal flowers, foliage and seed heads. I am happy to provide information on current flower availability by email.
