26th April 2026

The weather was absolutely perfect for the vase workshop yesterday. We enjoyed a walk around the field, pulled tulips and had refreshments outside in the sun. Everyone made beautiful arrangements. Our next workshop is bouquet making on Saturday 6th June.

Although the tulips are coming to an end, we have cut the first of the snowball viburnum and allium this week. The sunshine is lovely but we have had some frosts this week so have kept the fleece handy to throw over delicate seedlings. The lack of rain is causing some challenges as new plantings need to be regularly watered to get established.

Thank you to everyone who bought bunches of flowers from the stall Friday and Saturday - we had sold out before lunchtime each day.

Tickets for the PYO sessions over the summer and workshops are bookable on the website. We are also have a range of bouquet options and flower arranger or event buckets to order - please give 24 hours notice, everything is cut to order.

19th April 2026

What a lovely weekend it's been.

Saturday we had a pull your own tulips session - thanks to everyone who attended. The sunshine was a very welcome extra!

Sunday we had a private 'pull your own tulips' session - did you know you could arrange a visit to the flower field for a group of friends or family?

This weekend, I also got to do one of my favourite things - walk in the bluebell woods - the bluebell smell is amazing (I'm not so keen on the wild garlic smell). Photos can't capture the beauty of the blue carpet, the sound of birds or reflect how calming it is.

On the farm, we are coming to the end of the tulips - usually the last are the parrots and a few varieties that reliably flower later, such as Mistress. There are still lots of ranunculuses and the allium and hesperis are on their way.

I have sown Zinnia this week - they hate cold weather so I always leave sowing them until later. They germinate super fast and they don't want to get too leggy before they are planted out. Our last frost date is usually the third week of May so I want the plants to have formed good root balls by then but not be pot bound or too large. I collected my own Zinnia seeds from plants I liked last year so I'm excited to see what we get this year.

On Friday there were several bunches of flowers not paid from the flower stand. If you paid on line I would be grateful if you could make sure payment has gone through. I am very grateful for the on-going support I have had from all of you for the flower stand. If you know someone who you think might like local seasonal flowers please let them know about it (or buy them a bunch!)

Pull your own tulips

Saturday 18th April 9-1pm

We are delighted to be opening the farm in Ashford Hill on Saturday morning to give you the opportunity to pull your own tulips, as this has been very popular in previous years.

We have grown fewer tulips this year but as you can see there are still quite a few! Tulips will be £1/stem.

Please be aware the flower field is a short walk from the farm yard and the grown is uneven.

There will be flowers at the farm gate as usual both Friday and Saturday.

12th April

Its been a busy flower week, lots of florist orders and bouquets/bunches.

The ranunculus in the poly are flowering really well and the outside ones aren't far behind. Ranunculus are so pretty, they have hundreds of tissue paper like petals. Sadly they have no fragrance but otherwise are excellent cut flowers. They are beloved by aphids but the large number of ladybirds this year seems to be keeping them at bay. Ranunculus also suffer from powdery mildew, the ones in the polytunnel are fine at the moment but have noticed some issues with the ones under the low tunnels in the field so I have been spraying with a diluted milk solution and keeping the sides of the tunnel open as much as possible. The ranunculus plants are quite hardy but the flowers will be damaged by frost so I'm not ready to completely remove the tunnel coverings yet.

We are cautiously planting out seedlings. The first succession of helichrysum and malope are out but covered with fleece. The next succession of corncockles have been planted with another tray germinating in the greenhouse. It is a balance between risking planting things out too early so they get knocked back by frost or not getting them out quick enough so they run out of nutrients in their modules and don't have enough time to get established before the summer. It has been quite dry the last few weeks and I'm worrying about a similar problem to last year where the hot, dry weather meant the later spring sowings never really established.

The warm weather has pushed the tulips on, its amazing what a couple days of warm weather can do. I have planted less tulips this year - they are quite a financial risk, bulb prices have increased dramatically over the last couple of years, I always lose some bulbs to vermin, bulbs fail to produce and a couple of warm days can mean several thousand tulips ready at the same time - challenging to sell! Depending on the weather situation over the next week I may be in the position to hold a pull your own tulips next Saturday (18th) but will only decide this later this week. If you are interested in coming along keep an eye on facebook/insta and I will put up an update as soon I've made a decision.

Our next Vase workshop is on Saturday 25th April 10-12, if you want to come and get creative with tulips and ranunculus. Booking is required.

Happy Easter

Hope you've had a good weekend and managed to get outside into some sunshine.

We have had a busy weekend. Thank you to everyone who has bought flowers, it is very much appreciated.

As well as picking and arranging flowers this week we have been cutting back the next section of eucalyptus. The snaps have finally been planted out - although covered with fleece tonight as its supposed to be quite cold.

We now have tulips, ranunculus, butterfly ranunculus, anemones and narcissus flowering. The last of the hellebore have been cut today. They have been fantastic this year.

Saturday 25th April (10am-12) is our spring vase workshop. If you want an opportunity to learn a few tips about arranging flowers and get your hands on some of our lovely locally grown flowers why not join us? There will be opportunity to go into the field and find out about cutting and conditioning your own flowers. Please book via the website.

There is still a lot of seed sowing to do -time to think about sowing my beans, courgettes and cucumbers as well!

Have a good week.

Farm update

Its been a busy week here at Headley Flower Garden. Its not all pretty flowers!

The new storage shed is up (Thanks A and Z). I can't promise it will be any tidier than the last one - plastic w**d suppression fabric and plant support netting doesn't lend its self to neat piles.

The first section of eucalyptus has been cut back (coppiced). It looks very harsh - just a few sticks left but it is incredible how much growth it will put on over the season ready for the autumn.

Preparation for the dahlia beds has started. We usually use a no dig approach to bed prep (within the limitations of dealing with couch grass) however the bottom of the field has more clay and doesn't drain very well - not good for dahlia. Those of you who know me, know I have a love/hate relationship with dahlia. Planting and digging up dahlia are two of my least favourite activities so I want to be able to leave them in for at least a couple of years. Its really important they won't be sat in damp clay over winter, the tubers will rot. The first job was to mole plough strips - this get right down in the soil to break the claypan. After this, it has been ploughed. The soil clods will need to be broken down more and we will be adding well rotted manure. I usually direct plant dahlia tubers at the end of April so we are going to be busy getting it all ready over the next few weeks. Hopefully it will be filled with beautiful dahlia later in the summer.

Don't forget to pre-order Easter flowers for next weekend (previous post shows examples).

Easter weekend

Just a quick reminder that our season has started. Easter bouquets can be pre-ordered for next weekend on our website, made from flowers grown at the farm - tulips, ranunculus and narcissus, as well as beautiful, aromatic eucalyptus. Lovely Easter gifts with less calories and likely to last longer than chocolate -if chocolate in my house is anything to go by!

Collection from the farm in Ashford Hill only - please state which day you would like to collect at the check out.

The farm gate stall is open every Friday and Saturday for bunches of flowers.

What a difference a bit of sunshine makes!

This week we have been busy w**ding and bed prepping. Nearly all the tulips in crates in the poly have been pulled and we are now pulling the first of the tulips in the field.

The ranunculus in the poly and under the low tunnels are starting to flowers and we will be cutting the first of these this week.

It is the time to cut back(coppice) the eucalyptus but we have held off due to the frosty weather at night. This means we will have euc for the next couple of weeks and I'm adding to all the bouquets. We will then have to wait until the autumn before we can cut it again. The new growth is too soft and blackens very quickly when cut.

The farmgate stall was open on Friday and Saturday, thanks to everyone who bought flowers.

On Saturday we had our first workshop making Spring wreaths. What amazing weather, we were able to have a wlak around the field and have refreshments outside in the sun.

We are open for bouquet orders (including our Easter bouquets) and the dates of the next workshops and PYO days are up on the website if you want to visit the farm.

Mothering Sunday 15th March 2026

A big thank you to everyone who bought flowers this weekend. The tulips flowered right on cue - I wish I could say I had carefully planned for the first tulips to flower this weekend but I'm not that good! It was lovely to see so many returning customers, it means a lot.

It was lovely to have a good end to a week that has been a bit frustrating. On Thursday I checked on the ammi that we planted last week to find all but one plant had been eaten off. When working with nature you do get quite stoical but I had to have a few minutes! These were all autumn sown plants that I can't replace. The next succession is already growing but they won't ever be as big as the autumn sown. Over the winter I lost 10m of Orlaya and Thlaspi. I am having a major re-think about using the w**d suppressing matting for annuals. The mice can hide from predators and use my plants as an all you can eat buffet bar.

On a more positive note, there are so many ladybirds around this year - has anyone else noticed this? I have seen loads in the polytunnels already. I usually buy ladybird larva to release in the tunnels to keep control of the aphid population but I may not need to this year.

As the tulips are flowering I plan to have bunches available on the farm gate stall next Friday and Saturday (20th and 21st March) - thanks to everyone who has messaged about it. Gift bouquets can now be ordered through the website. It will be a couple of weeks before flower arranger buckets and luxury seasonal arrangements will be available, I'll hold off until the ranunculus are flowering properly.

On Saturday (21st March 10-12) we will have our first workshop which is spring wreaths. We will be making our own willow wreaths and decorating with spring bulbs and plants. There are a couple of spaces left if you would like to join us -booking details are available on the website.

Farm update 8th March 2026

And just like that there are flowers.

Lots of pretty blossoms in the field including this corylopsis pauciflora (pretty yellow flowers). I wish I had a bridal bouquet to make this week - its so dainty. I will get to use the ribes in my Mothering Sunday flowers.

Today I pulled the first of the tulips from the crates in the polytunnel. This is my 9th year growing flowers for sale and I know that this is a a 'here we go moment'. Although we have some early bulbs and foliage in the early months of the year, pulling the first tulips really marks the proper start of the flower year. The pace starts to pick up now.

Over the last few weeks we have finally managed to get out into the field to clear up. This week we have been chipping lots of stems from the roses and other shrubs that need pruning back at this time of year. We produce lots of waste material that needs composting, it is challenging to manage the volume. Chipping stems means a much smaller end volume and hopefully this will break down much quicker. The compost we make goes back on the field so the more we have the better.

The flower stand has had a spruce up with a new lick of paint. If I have any extras next weekend I will pop them on the stall but if you want to guarantee flowers for Mothering Sunday I suggest ordering your floral jam jars through the website ASAP.
