Quick farm update

I was so excited to pull the first crate tulips from in the polytunnel this morning. There are plenty to come, just in time for Mothering Sunday. The outside tulips are coming along nicely too. I will let everyone know shortly when we will be holding our pull your own tulip days.

I still have availability for a few more bouquets/jam jars for collection from the farm next weekend. They will be a mix of tulips, narcissus, anemones, eucalyptus and twiggy bits of interest.

Alternatively, what about buying your Mum a place on our vase workshop on Friday 11th April? Its a fantastic time of year for flowers, we will be using tulips, ranunculus, poppies, anemones and interesting foliage. It will be a relaxing morning surrounded by beautiful flowers.

Details about Mothering Sunday flowers and the vase workshop are available on the website.

Mothering Sunday Flowers
Sunday 30th March

Pre-ordered flowers will be available for collection on Saturday 29th or Sunday 30th March from the farm in Ashford Hill (Limewood Farm RG19 8BB).

This is likely to be a mix of our own flowers and foliage, and flowers sourced from other British growers. The weather in the next few weeks will influence the quantity of our own flowers we have available.

It is a really busy time of year for the flower industry and I will need to order any additional flowers early so it would be really helpful if orders could be made in good time.

Jam jar flowers £15
Bouquets £30

Available through the website www.headlyflowergarden.co.uk

Please include when you would like to collect at checkout

Field update End of Feb 2025

We are currently moving lots of the perennials in the field. Most perennials benefit from being moved every 3-4 years. Its also an opportunity to spilt and increase the numbers of plants we use a lot while removing things that aren't earning their space.

It has been exciting to see how the tulips responded to a couple of warmer days, so many more are pushing through the ground. Everything seems a little behind this year, we have had low light levels (you've probably noticed) and not many warm days. The tulips in the polytunnel are considerably ahead and I hope that they will be ready for Mothering Sunday. The field tulips will take a little longer but we should be picking in volume in the first couple of weeks of April. I will be releasing the dates for PYO tulips a bit closer to the time. This year we have 30 metre and over 6000 tulips.

One of the jobs this week was tackling one of our giant mole hills. We have lots of small/normal size mole hills - the moles have been really busy this year, but the giant mole hills have to be seen to be believed. We removed a wheel barrow full of clay and could have taken more. If you hear about sink holes appearing in the field you know why, the clay has to come from somewhere.

To continue with our exploration of what is available through the season, today we have the months of August and September. These are filled with dahlia, zinnia, asters and lots of other beauties. If you love bright colours (and I do) there are lots of choices, but there are also lots of softer colours such as the stunning cafe au lait dahlia.

In these months I'm busy drying flowers for use in weddings or for later in the year when the fresh flowers are over..

Flowers in June and July

If you are getting married or planning an event in June or July here are some of the flowers that are likely to be available. It turns out there is rather a lot of choice. All these flowers have been grown here on the farm. We grow a wide range of perennials and annuals so whatever the weather throws at us we should have a wide selection of flowers in your colour choice.

Farm Update

It has been fantastic to get out in the field for the last few days. There is still plenty of clearing to do. I finally managed to get the last of the anemones planted outside and the snaps into the polytunnel.

I will be sowing a few seeds over the next few weeks but these will all be hardy annuals, many of which I could sow in the autumn. Its too early to sow most things as they need heat to germinate and more light (day length and intensity) than we have at this time of year. Sowing too early can result in poor germination (waste of seed and compost) or very weedy, weak seedlings.

Flower availability

I have had a few wedding enquires over the last couple of weeks so I thought it would be helpful to look at flower variety availability (it's also a good excuse to look through photos of gorgeous flowers and dream of spring). Early in the year the weather does impact timings, a warm spring can bring forward flowering by several weeks. The photos show spring flowers and are labelled according to month. This is not an exhaustive list but hopefully gives a flavour of what will be available.

Tomorrow we will look at June, July and August.

Week on the farm

I don't like to go on about the weather BUT.....really?!

We have had more lovely wreath workshops at the farm this week. The wreaths have all been so beautiful.

There was a power cut at the farm on Saturday night and I was very apprehensive Sunday morning, the app said the electricity should be back on by 1pm - not great when you have a workshop in a dark, cold barn starting at 10am. Thankfully the electricity board sorted it in good time and we were able to go ahead with the workshop.

The wind had lifted the plastic sheets which were covering the new beds in the field. Having learnt from a previous experience, where I was lifted off my feet and dragged along by the power of the wind under the plastic sheets (think kite surfing, but in the field), I have simply piled them up, weighted them down and will deal with them on a calmer day.

The field looks very forlorn at the moment. Closer inspection shows the first green shoots of daffodils and iris. Over the next few weeks I'm looking forward to passing a few hours inside inspecting seed catalogues and dreaming of spring.

Farm update

It's been all about wreaths this week for Headley Flower Garden. I enjoyed an evening at St Andrew's in Pangbourne making wreaths with Mums from the school. The following day we woke up to a very cold morning. Everything in the field was sparkling with ice. Maddy and I spent the morning preparing the dairy for the wreath workshops. When everything thawed I picked/collected more goodies for our workshops.

On Friday, as the weather looked like it was going to be mild for a few days, I did a bit of watering in the polytunnels. Its always tricky to get watering right over the winter. If small seedlings get wet and cold they may perish but you don't want them to dry out and die.

Over the weekend I have welcomed 4 groups to make their own wreaths. There was, obviously, delicious cake (thanks, Mum). All the wreaths were fantastic; I'm always inspired by people's vision and artistic ability.

Looking forward to next weekend's workshops. There are also lots of wreaths and wreath kits to make up for collection this week.

Another busy and exciting week at the farm.

Thankfully I have had lots of help this week. Maddy and Zeb cleared the remaining dahlia, mulching them with compost. Nat and I then covered them with a thick layer of straw. Despite the strong winds the straw has stayed in place (so far).

Preparations for wreath workshops are well under way. We had a delivery of spruce from Newbury Christmas tree farm which made the workshop smell fantastic. On the farm we have picked lots of rose hips, ivy, holly and conifer. We also cut our first proper harvest from the new eucalyptus trees, this is now stood in an old trough waiting to be cut into more manageable sizes.

The dairy is having a bit of a tidy up ready for the first workshop on Saturday. It is looking very festive with the new lights up - I will show you a few more photos when we have properly decorated it later in the week.

The workshops are all sold out (thank you)but there are still a couple of wreath kits available and I can take a few more wreath orders.

Farm update

So I have finally started cutting back the dahlia and mulching them with compost. I'm going to cover them with straw and hope they survive. I may just be making posh hotels for mice to have bed and breakfast, but time will tell. The weather is forecast to get colder later in the week. The foliage turns to mush after it gets frosted, hopefully the compost and straw will keep the tubers safe.

The ranunculus have been planted in the polytunnel now the majority of the chrysanthemum have been cleared. The tulips that I'm hoping to force for Mother's day and Easter have been planted in crates so I can move them in and out of the greenhouse, in the hope I can manipulate their flowering date. Tulips need a period of cold to help their stems and flower heads to develop properly so the crates are outside at the moment (dont tell the squirrels).

I made my first wreath of the season, this is the first year I have so many different types of eucalyptus to choose from. It is also the first year I have lots of rose hips - I planted these two years ago and have been able to let them form hips this year.

The wreath workshops are now sold out - thank you.

I have a few slots for wreaths (£65), wreath kits (£38) and garlands, these can be ordered from the website. I also have a few willow wreaths (£12), made from my own willow. These can be used to make an outside wreath, or I decorate mine with a bit of ivy and a string of lights and enjoy them inside. Please DM me if you would like to order a willow wreath.

Farm update

I tend to think of this time of year as the start of our growing year. We have been busy over the last 6 weeks clearing and planting. I have been very grateful for the help I have received from Maddie, Sue and Zeb to get the field ready.

The dahlia are still looking lovely despite the two frosts we had very early in the season. Sadly they have been much less productive due to being knocked back by the frosts. With the weather getting colder next week I will be chopping them down. This year I'm leaving them in the ground and just mulching them. There are so many different ways of overwintering dahlia, its always a bit of a risk as they don't like to get wet and cold either in the ground or in a shed!

How do you plant 6 and a half thousand tulips? Previous years we have dug trenches by hand (I don't have the knees for that again) and last year we made raised beds (the vermin enjoyed eating a thousand bulbs). So this year I got help from Tom from Chris Lawrence Landscaping who dug a trench using a mini digger, then Mum and I simply planted/emptied the tulips in. Not quite as neat as the precise lines of bulbs I've planted before but I don't think the bulbs will notice and everything was completed by lunch - a definite record for tulip planting. I will also plant up some crates to force in time for Mother's day and Easter.

The final photo is of a pre-chitted anemone corm. They had a fantastic root system before planting and I hope they will quickly settle in the polytunnel. They are usually one of the first flowers we have, often starting to flower in February.

For anyone who is interested in what happening in the polytunnel I will post (hopefully) a short video later.

Thank you to everyone who came to the workshops last weekend. There were some lovely dried flower and autumn wreaths made. I enjoyed making my own autumn wreath which is now hanging on my door. There are lots of seed heads and autumn colours around at the moment - why not have a go at making your own?

Headley Flower Garden

After growing flowers in my garden in Headley for a number of years I was given the opportunity to expand into a field in the next village. This is my first year growing on a larger scale. I offer one-0ff bouquets, subscriptions, DIY wedding buckets and provide weekly flowers to Headley community shop (on a Thursday) and have just started attending Newbury Farmers Market. I provide fresh, local, seasonal flowers, foliage and seed heads. I am happy to provide information on current flower availability by email.
