A very warm welcome to our new supplier, Margaret Mulholland - Humanist Celebrant!

Celebrant Margaret Mulholland understands that every couple is unique, and your wedding should reflect that. That's why she takes the time to get to know both of you so that your special day feels genuinely yours.

Humanist ceremonies are non-religious but can be deeply spiritual and heartfelt. You don't need to identify as a Humanist to choose this kind of celebration; many couples Margaret works with come from various faith backgrounds or none at all. What they share is the desire for a ceremony that is personal, special, and meaningful.

Margaret Mulholland - Humanist Celebrant is based in Staffordshire & also covers the West Midlands.

'We are here as one brotherhood and one sisterhood, as one humanity, with a responsibility to the downtrodden and the oppressed of all humanity, it matters not under what flag or in what country they happened to be born.'

A beautiful quote by humanist radical and activist Lucy Parsons, (1851–1942)

"Nothing is more important than empathy
for another human being's suffering. Nothing.
Not career, not wealth, not intelligence,
certainly not status.
We have to feel for one another
if we're going to survive with dignity."

British actress and fashion icon
(1929 - 1993)

What is a humanist? Well, it's this!

'Humanity will have to learn to live without gods,' reflected Hector Hawton, the humanist author and campaigner.

'Scientific knowledge will take the place of superstition, and poetry will take the place of magic.

A beautiful rural setting for yesterday's wedding. Incredibly the rain stopped just before the ceremony and even the 🐑 behaved.

One of the greatest physicists of all time, Richard Feynman, was resolutely humanist in his outlook on life. He was born in 1918. Among his many delightful reflections on life, this one stands out for us.

Nobel laureate, free speech champion, and humanist Wole Soyinka: 'The greatest threat to freedom is the absence of criticism.'

Kindness 💚

“How can I make a difference?” asked the fox.
“Be kind to others,” replied the moon, “for even the smallest acts of kindness can make the world a better place.”

Spread kindness… it really is the key to changing the world 🫶

'I have no religion. I'm a humanist. Community building makes you realise how to walk in someone else's shoes, how to recognise empathy and where it exists, and to figure out you're not alone.' Actor, author, and humanist Kristen Bell 💪

'I am by heritage a Jew, by citizenship a Swiss, and by makeup a human being, and only a human being, without any special attachment to any state or national entity whatsoever.'

'Although I am a typical loner in daily life, my consciousness of belonging to the invisible community of those who strive for truth, beauty, and justice has preserved me from feeling isolated.'

Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany, and raised in Munich, in a secular Jewish home. Fascinated from an early age by science and the forces of nature, he had an unusual and disrupted education, but was a devoted autodidact.

For seven years from 1902 he worked in a patent office, during which time he earned his doctorate and – in 1905, his so-called ‘miracle year’ – published the papers which would profoundly alter our understanding of space and time.

He was a passionate humanist, who actively supported the Ethical Culture movement in the US, was a founder member of the First Humanist Society of New York, and an Honorary Associate of the Rationalist Press Association in the UK (which today publishes New Humanist Magazine.

Douglas Adams was a writer and humanist, best known for his contributions to science fiction, particularly the wildly popular 'The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy' series – a quote from which was displayed on London tube trains as part of Humanists UK’s 2009 atheist bus campaign:

'Isn’t it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?'

Adams described himself as a ‘radical atheist’ (‘just to signal that I really mean it’), and used his writings to probe philosophical and religious ideas. Awestruck and inspired by science and evolutionary biology, all of Adams’ work, wrote his biographer Nick Webb, ‘was imbued with a sense of the wonderful improbability of life itself’.

We're proud to announce he now has is very own page on our Humanist Heritage website (it's in the comments!) 👀

The Government has suggested increasing legal discrimination based on religion in schools. It’s 2024 and we think, in a diverse society, this is just wrong. All families should be able to send their child to their local state school. It’s just common sense. Taxpayer-funded schools should be open...

Letting go ❤️

“I don’t want to let go,” said the fox.
“Letting go doesn’t have to mean forgetting,” replied the moon, “but it can mean the start of a beautiful new beginning.” ⭐️🎈

Not everyone would agree with me but for me being a vegan is an integral part of my Humanist beliefs

Humanists recognise that other sentient animals are not mere objects or resources for use, but conscious beings with their own interests, emotions, needs, and the capacity to suffer. We support efforts to promote animal welfare and prevent needless cruelty.

We have supported every legislative move to expand animal welfare protections and animal sentience considerations in UK history. While we aren't a specialist animal welfare charity ourselves and don't make recommendations on diet, our policy platform endorses the World Organisation for Animal Health’s Five Freedoms for animals under human control, and want to see all these rights and freedoms implemented and protected in full in law or policy by governments across the UK and the world. Our campaigns have included work to ban non-stun slaughter across the UK.

Today marks the 10-year anniversary since same-s*x weddings first took place in England and Wales, a symbolic moment that changed the lives of millions up and down the country. On March 29th 2014 same-s*x couples tied the knot at the stroke of midnight across many parts of the country.

In December of that same year my wife and I switched our civil partnership to a marriage and it was a significant and important moment for us in our 23 year history.

A YouGov poll last year showed 78% of people in Britain support same-s*x marriage, the highest recorded to date.
This compares to 42% who supported it in 2011

Since the law was changed, there have been more than 50,000 same-s*x marriages in the UK, according to the Office for National Statistics.

I think it’s time to lose the term gay marriage, same s*x marriage - I love this quote from Pink “I think the best day will be when we no longer talk about being gay or straight... It's not a gay wedding, it's just a wedding... It's not a gay marriage, it's just a marriage”

I’d love to create a wedding ceremony for you- get in touch ♥️

Hand In Hand 💜

Two otters floated hand in hand
In the blue lagoon
They counted stars together
Beneath a crescent moon
They held tight to one another
So they wouldn’t float away
And one said to the other
“I love you more each day.”
