A family wedding! & .fil_mo !

Fishka as we like to call them arrived at Colstoun about 7 years ago with the intention of staying for a few weeks and improving their English before their wider travels and work in the U.K. … however… they quickly became a very important part of our family.

They call Lyn mom, and they are most certainly a part of the fabric of our lives and integral members of our family.

When they came back in 2023 fil proposed to Mishka in the courtyard in front of the family recounting to us all the importance of Colstoun in their relationship and lives.

Yesterday we watched them get married in front of friends and family and it was lovely and emotional in so many beautiful ways.

We love you Fishka!

Just 2 weeks until exhibition launch of ‘s The Other Side. We’d love to welcome you to our exhibition launch at Colstoun on the 4th May between 5-7pm.

This is our first exhibition in the coach house and trialling some of the curation plan last week was absolutely mega. The paintings are perfectly suited to the character and size of the coach house. We can’t wait to welcome you to the exhibition.

Alongside the opening we also have our open gardens and exhibition opening hours 10-3pm on weeks between 4th-18th May bank holiday included where we have a cafe as well!

See you all soon!

Sunshine between the rain clouds today! 🌧️
There is so much blossom 🌸and gorgeous greenery appearing in the garden which may be as a result of all the rain we’ve had recently!

It is just a few weeks before we open for our first garden opening hopefully some wild meadows and more flowers will be joining us along with some heat!

This week in Scotland - rain ☔️
It seems like it hasn’t stop since the beginning of the year, we’ve had ponds and lakes appear where they definitely aren’t meant to be! And mowing has definitely not been able to start properly but hopefully with this big old soak we’ve had the gardens will be set up for a beautiful spring proper ahead. We’ve also been able to appreciate beautiful reflections on water of trees above!

I’m very sad to say that due to law changes in the U.K. it now makes a non viable option for hosts.

WWOOFers have been the biggest part of our journey in the garden over the last decade and it’s sad to think we won’t have more opportunities to meet and engage with people from communities over the world.

Through the programme we’ve met Canadians, Americans, Mexicans, Argentinians, Australians, Kiwis, Brits, Israeli, Palestinians, French, Spaniards, Japanese, Italians, Germans, Danish, Norwegians, Slovaks, Austrians, Dutch, Polish, Chinese, Taiwanese, Moroccan, South African people just to name a few. On any given year we would host about 12-30 people from March until September…

ironically we were just the vessel for them to experience the world and other cultures.

There are so many examples but take for instance who met they ended up travelling the world together from a chance wwoofing experience at Colstoun. It’s very sad to see these changes and that our dinner tables are going to be 4-6 people quieter during the long summer nights.

We will move on and continue to evolve and improve but for now we can reminisce on a decade of meeting wonderful people and how they improved our lives in a much bigger way than just helping in the Garden!

This spring we are all about structure! Planting robust elements into the walled garden that will breakup the larger sections. Some highlights include:
1) a Photonia Red Robin hedge planted to create a hidden meadow within the walls of the garden it will take a couple of years to hide what is behind it however the immediate barrier means we can add to meadow which is where the new bees are being kept!
2) a line of h**es which will break up the left hand growing section of the garden, h**e are strong solid plants that will provide shade and protection for some of the more delicate growing and eating flowers and fruits.
3) Roses! We have 40 roses that are about to migrate from the nursery into the walled garden. It’s a really exciting time as we’ve propagated these roses on from some of the heirloom varieties from colstoun

Another shot from Aileen & Kyle | 15 07 23 by

The glass house is a special tranquil escape from the craziness of the wedding party. Where the couple can spend a few moments and a few deep breaths amongst the flowers mum has been growing, ducking under the fig tree on their way in.

It is one of my favourite places at Colstoun.

This spring we will be opening the gardens including the walled garden to the public for the first time ever. Expect blossom and beautiful flowers (hopefully) - Details will be announced over the coming weeks but it will coincide with the first public exhibition - we are hoping as the project evolves that this will become a regular occurrence throughout the spring summer and autumn months in years to come.

We are looking for people to join our garden volunteer team. It’s a great opportunity to grow your own veg and fruit and be a part of an ever improving project. We’d love to hear from you if you want to join us.

We are particularly interested if you have prior experience in pruning and harvesting.

We are located between Haddington and Gifford and we work all the way through the year.

Our Story

Welcome to Colstoun House - Scotland’s oldest family home. In 2010 we opened our doors to the public for the first time in 900 years as an exclusive use events and wedding venue. Since then we’ve used the house and grounds to create a truly unique experience.

We follow a simple motto when it comes to any experience at colstoun “Our house, Your home”. We strive to make you feel relaxed and at home. This motto is at the core of every event at Colstoun and we feel it is why we won the 2018 Scottish Rural Award for Hospitality.

Colstoun is also the Ancestral Home of the Broun Family. If you are a Broun or Brown and what to arrange a visit please contact us via the Contact Page
