Thanks to everyone who has sent messages over the last few days! We are finally back home with power restored! Feels nice to be home and have a good idea what needs to be repaired!

The damage is pretty confusing. Exposed tall trees left standing and sheltered trees ripped entirely from ground. And poly tunnels ripped apart whilst others are perfectly fine. Nature is a cruel and powerful beast!

We are going to be hard at work repairing things over the coming weeks for the beginning of our summer season.

Onwards and upwards.

Unfortunately we’ve had quite a lot of storm damage today in multiple areas around Colstoun and it is unsafe due to building and poly tunnel damage and fallen trees for any tours to be conducted this weekend apologies in advance if you’ve booked in. You should get an email soon to try and rearrange.

Going through the photos taken by it reminds me that I need to thank online! His team does an amazing job for so many of our couples but we feel like there is no greater testimony than using a supplier for your own event. Gary was an amazing support to Joanne and I organising absolutely everything and being so accommodating to our plans! We couldn’t have asked for anything more from our wedding catering team and that is why we recommend Gary to so many couples!

The Coach House set up in September. We’ve been made aware of multiple florists claiming to have made the floral arrangements for our wedding 😅 just to reiterate from the first post they were very kindly arranged by my brother as a wedding gift, that isn’t to say that other florists aren’t amazing, we’ve got a list of brilliant florists that can provide incredible arrangements for your wedding 😍

The Colstoun Walled Garden

The walled garden is the beating heart of Colstoun. In 2024 we improved access to the poly tunnel for all of the months we have weddings by lifting the sides and paving with crazy paving the main arterial path way meaning that even towards the end of October you’ll still have no issue in walking down the path!

September 2024 was my wedding day naturally we chose Colstoun as our venue and we had the amazing capture some brilliant moments, including our floral arrangements by my big brother Cameron. I’ll be sharing more photos from that weekend over the next few weeks.

The back end of Colstoun Estate at Slateford Strip looking toward the lammermuir hills looking roughly in the direction of the village of Gifford, , and Eaglescairnie. Over the Beugh Burn and the Colstoun Water. The crisp January mornings provide a sort of clarity, there is quite a simple scientific explanation for this as cold air holds less moisture than warm air which results in less haze and a further observable distance, however it is achieved it’s wonderful to look upon the snow topped lammermuir hills glistening.

Last opportunity to purchase ‘s “The River Painting” prints for Christmas. Just a few editions remain and need to be spent out asap to ensure arrival before Christmas.

Joe Grieve’s River Painting is part of the Colstoun Arts Collection depicting the Colstoun Water which runs beneath the house has been turned into a limited edition print in a series of 24 by The Art Of Print Edinburgh.

Joe Grieve was the first artist that participated in the Colstoun Arts Residency Programme. We collect works by artists that take part in the residency, works collected by Colstoun Arts by permission of the artist are turned into a limited edition print and then sold to members of the general public as an accessible way in which to collect art and as an additional revenue stream for residency artists, profits derived from print sales by Colstoun Arts are returned into the residency programme.

Winter has now arrived.

Two consecutive days below zero and some hard frost setting in. Perhaps differently to other wild meadows we let ours go completely bonkers with as little human interaction as possible. This means it takes time for the balance to be found. Winter sees the grasses begin to tussock and gaps appear where different bits and bobs start to appear. If you look carefully you can see little spaces where insects and creepy crawlies are finding a warm home. Other meadows that we’ve been developing for a number of years have stronger diversity of flowers and all sorts of flora and fauna and it’s such an adventure to see the meadows develop

Reminiscing about summer time today in the midst of autumn 🍂- you can see the length of the wild meadows, the abundance of the walled garden. It was a particularly challenging year with many changes in Scottish and Westminster government legislation making running a rural business that much more challenging. Thanks for everyone who has supported us this year and we look forward to some hard winter work getting ready for 2025.

It’s a weird old time of year in the garden. You’ve got a variety of flowers out and in full bloom plus large fruit (pears and apples) on the tree. You can see the borage starting to get a bit leggy but the bees are still madly in love with it! The leaves for the most part in the parkland are green and vibrant but those which go the deepest red in autumn begin their fast paced journey to dropping around this time.

In other news our seedling area has been disassembled and the wood used will begin repairing sections from the garden, seedling will go back into the glasshouses and poly tunnels and we then begin the preparations for winter. When the very last phases of structural work will begin in the garden. Two bits of fencing some hedging and turfing will mean come spring time we are in a really really good position for some exciting news with

What a change!

This year has been a series of mega highs and lows in the garden. Obviously the weather! But we could talk about that forever. Earlier this year the legislation changed in the U.K. and that prevented us from taking on volunteers.

Needless to say with just mum and cam the garden started to get really out of hand.

However not that long ago the legislation was clarified and wwoofing was no longer impacted to such an extent!!

As a result we’ve stocked up on some of the best talent wwoof currently has available and they’ve helped us go from to bottom restoring all hard work that has occurred over the last decade!

I’ll be sure to post more videos soon but in the meantime enjoy this before and after shot.

You might ask yourself why is all that green waste on the path? Cam designed the garden to be as low effort as possible. Where ever you need to w**d you can just plonk w**ds on a grass path and our giant lawnmower picks them up mulches them and then combines them with other compost material it is an absolute game changer.

After such a gloomy morning it’s nice to see the sun this afternoon

The first rise on the river this autumn.

Working away in the garden all summer has some benefits, for one our personal cherry consumption ha sky rocketed... but more importantly the place is going to look that much better in 2021.

Just a quick little flight around Colstoun this autumn. Right at the end you can see our new little lake and wild meadow that was planted this year.

Our Story

Welcome to Colstoun House - Scotland’s oldest family home. In 2010 we opened our doors to the public for the first time in 900 years as an exclusive use events and wedding venue. Since then we’ve used the house and grounds to create a truly unique experience.

We follow a simple motto when it comes to any experience at colstoun “Our house, Your home”. We strive to make you feel relaxed and at home. This motto is at the core of every event at Colstoun and we feel it is why we won the 2018 Scottish Rural Award for Hospitality.
