Another beautiful wedding this weekend! A combination of brilliant hot weather and just as everyone left at midnight the craziest storm with lightning from all directions which is exactly the sort of rain the garden has been crying out for all year!

Wildlife - one of the most important things to us is wildlife that is why we try and create habitats that promote diversity and sustainable populations. This truly wild meadow is full to the brim with birds, insects and lovely goodness. It has been an experiment to see what happens if you allow an area to be truly wild and the results have blown us away in such a relatively small area we’ve seen dozens of bird nests and this is only the beginning. The only bit of maintenance we do in this section of the garden is cutting a few paths but even then we try and keep the grass long and undisturbed only cutting in preparation for a wedding or event

The walled garden is an absolute sea of green right now with all different variations on the luscious green leaves and grass at this time of year, thank goodness for the rain we’ve had recently.

Yesterday we welcomed some guests from far and wide and introduced them to some local cuisine in the poly tunnels and explored the work of

is such a big part of what we do at Colstoun without the wwoofers we probably wouldn’t have been able to make the garden what it is today (still a work in progress but worlds apart from where we started.

We worked out that we’ve had in the last decade somewhere in the region of 250 wwoofers from I think near on 30 countries come and volunteer in the garden. It’s a rich, affordable and varied way to explore the world and if you are interested in gardening it’s an absolutely incredible thing to do!

Lady Elizabeth Mackenzie - the one that ate the pear 🍐 - if you know the story of Colstoun you’ll know that we are just a little bit obsessed with pears 🤦‍♂️ it stems from a 1000 year old story involving wizards which maybe I’ll share in a few weeks time, but the important part with the greatest implications come lady Elizabeth taking a bite out of the pear! She sits above us whilst we eat dinner in the dining room, with her beautiful frame which of course contains pears!

Our Story

Welcome to Colstoun House - Scotland’s oldest family home. In 2010 we opened our doors to the public for the first time in 900 years as an exclusive use events and wedding venue. Since then we’ve used the house and grounds to create a truly unique experience.

We follow a simple motto when it comes to any experience at colstoun “Our house, Your home”. We strive to make you feel relaxed and at home. This motto is at the core of every event at Colstoun and we feel it is why we won the 2018 Scottish Rural Award for Hospitality.

Colstoun is also the Ancestral Home of the Broun Family. If you are a Broun or Brown and what to arrange a visit please contact us via the Contact Page
