I carved a little time out from the farm and so glad I did. Even if it’s been a mad week and jobs have piled high. The wonderful ( and very patient) Sofia from taught me the art of making a willow coffin this week . Wow- it’s an art form! A very interesting insight into the world of funeral services and very informative as a link to how to provide a professional service when I am asked to create memorial flowers. Woven coffins tie in so well with the ethos of wards farm flowers and I now have the bug to create more willow items. …. Watch this space.

It’s a wrap! Two days at “Floricon”
I was the only British grower. I was the only one with dried flowers and foliage. I was the only one flying the flag for British flowers and growers. BUT - hey guys- florists would like more! Small growers need to work together to promote our wonderful products and make them accessible. Distributors and large wholesalers are welcoming and receptive to our flowers. We just need to be top top quality, grow in quantity and provide products that are different, quintessentially British and consistent for retail. Logistics can be overcome. Watch this space! And back to the farm I go…

When your flower are used to create even more beautiful things. These talented artists have been busy working with recently to immortalise my flowers. While I have to wait another season for them to arrive back there is something wonderful in them being captured forever.

Okay, so I’m meant to be cutting grass…. The last of the sweet peas are MINE 😊 actually mostly they are mine anyway as for some reason they aren’t the best commercial crop for me. Fair enough really as they don’t travel well and don’t last all that long in a vase. BUT one I’d never be without and for a special one off bunch, a wedding where vine is the word, a gentle flowing memorial arrangement and the most amazing perfume- they are unsurpassed. So- a t shirt full of registered organic seed us heading into the store with me. It’s actually the one flower I really am most happy to see arrive each year. What’s your favourite?

Here is an example of our “ fresh to dry” this month. Items may vary a little depending on what comes good. The idea being that you can enjoy this bunch fresh for 5 days in a vase then tie them and hang them to dry. Two for the price of one! Our drying rooms are filling fast this time of year and we will have an amazing selection of dried flowers and foliage on offer from October onwards. Keep an eye on The Devon flower cooperative website. New fabulous items posted weekly.

In honour of the late Dame Edna. I’ve never been one for fashion trends and Glads get a tough press but I LOVE 💕 them. Such beautiful colours. These peachy orange are the first to appear, 3 in a vase - done! Okay- I know, hard to pair with other things- but who would want to? These Babies have been nurtured for years on our organic farm and I’m not giving up the fight to get them loved once more. flowers farming grown flowers

🤫 Shhh! This one is for my mum and it’s the last of my dried roses. She’s not on social media so I’m safe to shout about dried flowers. I defy anyone who doesn’t have a place for these. We have sold out this year but start harvesting and drying in Ernest around June time ready for those dull winter months when we need vibrant cheer and wonderful perfume. No- I haven’t filtered this picture. Our dried flowers really are this vibrant. We have over 50 different varieties of flowers and filler in wholesale volumes. Keep an eye out on www.devonflowercooperative.co.uk or sign up for the newsletter and we’ll sound the bells when we are ready to trade our dried range again.

Our collaboration with other local flower farmers through www.devonflowercooperative.co.uk is getting underway and soon we will have fresh stock available from the site. Hello! We’ve been rather busy here at wards farm flower’s recently so apologies for being so quiet. Today has been all about our willow. We love it! We use it for many many projects. It’s so colourful, versatile and give’s wonderful structure and form to large and small installations. I have saved back stands of our different types so that I can take cuttings now and increase our growing stock. I hope I can find the time at some point to take a course and learn more about this wonderful plant that loves our wet brick clay!

Apologies to all who planned to visit our flower farm today for FFTF big weekend. We have had to take the decision to close for bio security reasons. For those of you who don’t know- we are also a working farm and occasionally need to safeguard our animals. Bird flu is whipping through many farms throughout the country. Please spare a thought for those poor farmers who face mass flock culling, red tape , a whole lot of cleaning and an instant stop to their livelihood. We’ve been there ourselves a fair few years ago and it is an extremely hard thing to face. We hope you understand our decision to close our gates for the moment to lots of visitors but we hope to welcome you with open arms as soon as we can. We will be opening THE DEVON FLOWER COOPERATIVE on line very shortly!
