Although the terms ‘toast master’ and ‘master of ceremonies’ are often used interchangeably, there are some key differences. An MC is generally less formal and more relaxed. They’re unlikely to wear the traditional red coat and white gloves, use a gavel, or be a stickler for old-fashioned etiquette. For example, if they’re asking for a round of applause, they’re more likely to say, ‘put your hands together’ or ‘give it up for…’ instead of ‘please show your appreciation for…’.

Photos of the fabulous who was the MC at the wedding of our clients Bridie & Jesse. He announced the bridal party into the reception, introduced the speeches, coordinated games and even got things moving on the dance floor!

Wedding traditions are steeped in history, but not all of them have to make it to your big day. Did you know the tradition of the bride being “given away” by her father comes from a time when marriages were more about alliances than love? Today, you can reimagine this moment—maybe both your parents walk you down the aisle or your best friend takes the lead.

Make your wedding day yours by keeping the traditions that feel right for you.

What’s your favorite wedding tradition, and which one would you ditch?

What’s the plan on the cake front?

Personally, I’m a big fan of making a big deal about your wedding cake! Nobody puts Baby in the corner, right?

We recently planned a wedding where the couple chose to wheel their beautiful cake to the centre of the dance floor on a trolley. It was a truly showstopping moment in the middle of an awesome party and if like me, you can’t decide on one…how about having a show stopping dessert table, guaranteed to completely wow your guests.

Whether one of your guests is living with a serious food allergy or intolerance, or simply chooses not to eat meat and/or dairy, it’s important to accommodate any dietary requirements.

Start by discussing this with your caterer. Once you’ve confirmed they’re able to provide an option for all types of dietary requirements, you will need to contact your guests and compile a comprehensive list of their restrictions including any allergies.

The simplest way to do this is to ask for confirmation in the RSVP. Whether you’re collecting responses digitally or traditionally, make sure it’s clear guests are required to let you know if they have any specific dietary requests when confirming their attendance.

A Guide To Serving Food at Your Wedding

A few things to consider:

- The food you choose to serve at your wedding can also be a way of allowing your guests to experience your culture. Last year, we had a couple who were of Irish and Jamaican heritage and their menu was a fabulous fusion of both.

- The type of food you’re able to serve at your wedding may be impacted by your choice of wedding venue. Some venues provide food and drink in-house while others will allow you to arrange external caterers. Often, they will have a list of preferred caterers for you to choose
from.

- Your venue may have a kitchen or food preparation area for external caterers to use or you may need to select a vendor who can provide their own outside kitchen. This is also likely to
be a requirement if you’re planning a marquee wedding.

- If you want something specific that requires a particular method of cooking or additional
space, such as wood fired pizza, BBQ or food truck, discuss this with your venue and make
sure they can accommodate your plans.

Food, glorious food! Feasting and dining together is a central a part of any wedding celebration. If you’ve never planned a large event, it can feel like a lot to get your head around, especially if your wedding is taking place over a few days. On top of the logistics of serving food at your wedding, there’s just so much choice these days.

There are no hard and fast rules about serving food at your wedding. Ultimately, what and when you eat is completely up to you, but keeping your guests fed and watered is an essential part of ensuring their comfort and enjoyment.

PSA

On your wedding day - Dancing and music is not just for the dancefloor or just for the evening of your wedding!

You and your guests can dance and enjoy music throughout your wedding day:
- During pre-ceremony drinks
- in the ceremony
- during the drinks reception
- when guests are called to take their seats
- in the wedding breakfast
- And of course during the evening party!

Depending on your venue, you can also use music to ‘zone’ the space and create a different atmosphere in each area. When the evening party is in full swing, you could have a more peaceful, chilled out spot for people to relax while others are going all out on the dancefloor.

Have you selected your bride squad yet?

Here are my 4 top tips to help you choose your bridesmaids:
1. Think twice before you ask - once you ask it’s hard to take it back. When you announce your engagement it’s easy to get swept up with all the excitement but make your initial list and sleep on it before you ask and make any announcements.

2. Be clear and honest about your expectations - what role do you want them to play? Do you need people to accompany you whilst you shop for your dress and to be hands on during the planning or just someone to look the part on the day? If you need them to be hands on, their normal location and level of busyness are important factors to take into account when making your selection.

3. Consider the size of your wedding, number of guests and overall budget when deciding on the number of bridesmaids to choose. Generally, the more you have, the more details to organise and the greater the cost.

4. If you have to “let someone down” who was clearly “expecting” to be asked, do it gently by giving them another role – perhaps doing a reading at the wedding service - and then make sure they are thanked openly during the speeches.

USHER/GROOMSMAN  - who are you entrusting with this job and what are you going to tell them it might involve? Here’s a handy list you can SAVE and share with them.

Typical duties might include:

Pre-Wedding
* Co-operate with the couple as they source suits and accessories. Attend fittings if necessary.
* Attend the groom’s stag night. Although you’re not obliged to organise the occasion, the best man will probably appreciate a little help and support throughout the planning process.
* Make sure you know what’s expected of you at the wedding. Tasks may include ensuring everyone knows where to park, or you might be asked to show people where they’re supposed to sit during the wedding breakfast.

On-the-Day
* You may be asked to get ready with the groom and his best man. Make sure you arrive on time and have everything you need to bring.
* Do your best to keep the groom calm. Be on hand to help any page boys or younger members of the groom’s party get ready.
* Arrive early at the ceremony venue and prepare to greet the first wedding guests. If the weather is bad, it’s handy to have umbrellas on hand to shelter people as they dash inside.
* Ensure any reserved seating is clearly identified.
* Welcome guests, direct them to their seats, and hand out orders of service.
* Traditionally, ushers also es**rt the bridesmaids out at the end of the ceremony.
* Make sure everyone knows where they need to go for the reception. This may be close by, but it sometimes involves pre-arranged wedding transport or a car journey.
* Herd up stragglers and make sure nobody is left behind.
* At the reception, you’ll be expected to round up guests for the group wedding photos. Work with the photographer to call out relevant names when asked.
* When it’s time for the wedding breakfast, make sure guests know where they should be sitting.

“I have to confess that when Joanna suggested we have a wedding planner I thought ‘do we really need one?’ Then we met Val and the answer was a resounding ‘yes!’⠀

Undertaking a wedding at home is no mean feat and to have Val’s calm presence in the run up to the wedding was invaluable. She is a very quiet powerhouse! With her directing everything, it allowed us to really enjoy the preparations and see all the ideas come together seamlessly. Even when there was a hiccup (the large illuminated sign failed to materialise) Val managed to find a replacement, at 3 o’clock on a Friday afternoon in wedding season!⠀

On the day, it was lovely to have her with us making sure that every detail in the marquee and the church was correct, and later on directing the timings and all the minutiae that go to making a truly memorable day run smoothly. She was even there for the mammoth clear up the following week. I truly could not have managed without her and cannot recommend her and her team highly enough.” Sue - Mother of the Bride⠀
