Pick n Mix Silent Disco are proud to have provided the headphone technology as part of this immersive arts event last weekend! 🎧🪩✨

Folktastic-the musical extravaganza where local legends took centre stage

Saturday saw us take over the beautiful for our showcase funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund bringing local folklore to life through different music genres.

Thank you so much to all our amazing partners who brought our vision to life. Firstly, thanks to Sean Dudley from Carduelis Content & Historical Research and our heritage trainees for your research and foundations for the music to be created.

The fantastic team at Leicestershire Music for supporting young composer Sam Nutter to create the Black Annis piece with the strings ensemble and bringing their musicians to work with and uncover the Hall Ghosts.

National Youth Jazz Collective and team who only after a few meetings brought Heer and Ranjha to life.

Jafro 's re-telling of Anansi the Spider had us all dancing along under the Yew tree. 🕷

Tom the Tale Teller for welcoming guests and setting the scene for our visitors with his traditional storytelling.

Enter Edem and CURVE theatre, Leicestere YCC actors for bringing us Black Annis and many more of the characters- we loved the child ghosts 👻

Our fantastic performers and musicians, Asa, Lucy, Lexi and Kayley whose versions of Nine O'clock Horses and The Cursed Slippers of the Papillon Hall had you on edge! Thanks to 10AD and Tye for the soundtrack to the silent disco sharing Bel the Giant's journey across the city. Headsets provided by Rose Melba DJ.

What a night we had on Saturday at Pick n Mix Silent Disco Sonic Boom Silent Disco After Party Thanks to all the beautiful people who came and danced and sung! We partied into the night at Calm Yoga Studios - a completely different kind of venue for Pick n Mix but such an amazing party space! There was a real mix of ages and music fans dancing together on one dancefloor - and that is the magic of a silent disco and the reason I do these events! It’s wonderful to see this real melting pot of people, music tastes and ages all vibing off one another in one room! ❤️Thanks Burton Music Collective and Sonic Boom Festival for supporting my night & to our awesome line up of DJs onefortheroadpresents Jonnie Makin for playing the bangers and keeping people dancing & singing all night! Ok party people, tomorrow in our little old town is the biggest thing to happen for a decade…..pretty much!
Free music festival in town, ITV will be there to capture the news. So please get involved and show your face. If we build, it will be back next year and the year after. Foundations are being laid. Future is bright it’s super Sonic!!!! Boom!!!

Pick n Mix Disco - Meet the DJ

Rose Melba is a DJ with 20 years experience starting out learning Drum and Bass on vinyl, moving to indie disco and more recently finding her musical home in an eclectic mix of disco, house and rave. ‘For me now - music and DJing is pure therapy and when I play I like to take people on a journey with me - transitioning through genres and vibes’
You’ll find Rose Melba regularly DJing with Souled Out Sound System at the Tower Brewery and with One for the Road at Brews of the World.
In 2019 after being made redundant from the corporate world, Rose started up Pick n Mix Silent Disco. ‘The magic of the Silent Disco format is that it enables the night to transcend music genres- bringing lovers of music together and connecting on one dancefloor!‘

Meet the Dj: Jonnie Makin

Jonnie Makin has been building his vinyl collection from the age of 8 - starting out his DJ career at the age of 14 in social clubs. Always a big fan of indie music- Jonnie has supported local indie legend DJ Neil at the Tower Brewery Born to Boogie nights. And more recently Jonnie has supported local alt/ indie band The Velocettes on tour.

Jonnie also has strong roots in dance music, having put on local nights called Shuffle with Nathan Dawe. A DJ highlight was playing with Nathan Dawe on his 02 Birmingham sell out show in 2019.

Meet the DJ - Matt Vinall:
Matt’s first taste of music and vinyl came about when he was given a record player and three 7” singles as a birthday present at 3 years old. With wide and varied influences, growing up on the hip hop 80’s Electro Series to the Bugsy Malone Musical.
“I like to throw in some eclectic curveballs and that comes from my days of going to The Social in London and the Big Beat Boutique in Brighton. Before that I was attending late 80s illegal raves. ‘The big beat genre is where my heart lies, it showed me that you can play anything you like to a crowd with some humour injected”

Funk and Soul plays a massive part in his tastes, from rare New Orleans soul, rare French Grooves to new funk and soul from Lack of Afro to the Daptone record label.

“Music is power, music is my soul and music is my saviour through the dark times”

You can find Matt playing out regularly at Brews of the World as part of the One for the Road collective with fellow founder, Dave Garb.

Meet the DJs - Dave Garb

Growing up in Sheffield in the late 80's early 90's Dave spent nights at the Leadmill and his Saturdays crate digging Warp records - listening to a mix of house music/acid house/indie/hip hop and of course Sheffield Bleep! Dave dabbled in DJing in his 20s but it was Lockdown that introduced him to digital DJing. As the world reopened One For The Road was formed with Matt Vinall - a platform to share musical passion to people. ‘One for the Road was always about supporting and encouraging other DJ's and we're really beginning to see a collective forming’.
Dave’s DJing isn't defined by genres - ‘ It may be clichéd but I want to take people on a musical journey’ You can find Dave and One for the Road DJing regular slots at Brews of the World.
