There’s no need for synthetic ribbon and plastic floral foam: no rule that says you must have Lilies and Roses.
All the flowers and foliage in this funeral spray were picked here in late October and fastened with jute twine, sticks and moss onto a compostable base.
It’s a gentler way to finish your time on Earth.
When we die we leave nothing behind but memories .. shouldn’t we say the same of our funeral flowers?
Today is All Souls Day when we think about all the people we’ve loved and lost .. don’t let their longest-lasting memorial be a brick of green plastic.

Significant colours can be a great way to personalise flowers without having to spell out a word or ‘painting’ foam-based picture with massed chrysanthemums. These flowers are for Patrick, a proud Irishman so were inspired by the colours of the Irish flag 🇮🇪 and featured Bells of Ireland and the golden turning leaves of autumnal amelanchier.

Gill and I are still buzzing from last week’s warm welcome and conversations. Cemetery and crem managers are keen to support the aim of our directory - namely to get the plastic out of funeral flowers for good. Will you help us by choosing tributes without plastic if you’re a member of the public, or by offering sustainably made, plastic-free choices if you’re a florist? Let’s be the change in this corner of floristry. Please comment and share if you’re with us on this!

We think it’s gorgeous.

Carole and I spent three days this week at the ICCM Conference in Kenilworth.
The Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management represents all the venues who have to deal with the tons of plastic floral foam left behind after funerals and we were welcomed with open arms.
Our presentation was really well received and we came away very happy with the exciting new contacts we made: the bereavement sector is a fascinating place.
If you’re a florist who is willing to offer compostable funeral arrangements then look at our website and find out how to join us .. because we’re going places.

I’ve just been sorting out photos for a slideshow in readiness for stand at the ICCM conference tomorrow. We’ll be talking with the funeral industry experts who are leftt to deal with the plastic waste left behind after so many funerals. We want to find ways to work together across the whole funeral sector to promote more sustainable alternatives for funerals. A simple sheaf made for a man who ‘didn’t like flowers’ but who appreciated nature and all her seasons.
Bergenia leaves already tinted red, Elderberries and Hawthorn, Beech, Oak and a few Rosehips.
There’s beauty everywhere if you look.
Our website lists florists who will create sustainable funeral flowers with no floral foam - and occasionally no flowers either.

Well, we came away from the awards without a prize - but with a big grin on my face like I’d won the lottery.
Anyone who pictures the funeral industry as a place of dour, elderly men in black suits should have been at last night and felt the electricity generated by a room full of bright people all excited by their own part in the process and eager to learn from others how we can all do even better.
It was The Farewell Flowers Directory’s first awards night but it definitely won’t be the last.

Delighted to tell you that The Farewell Flowers Directory is among the finalists at this weekend’s Association of Green Funeral Directors’ awards.
It’s very heartening to have our contribution to sustainability recognised so quickly.
With the majority of funeral flowers still being stuck into plastic floral foam that will remain in landfill forever, it’s a situation that has to change.

Here at Tuckshop Flowers I’ve been cutting back my Dogwood shrubs. The stems are perfect for weaving into attractive wreath vases that can be stored up for future use. As well as making great bases for Christmas projects, I’ll also store them up for funeral wreaths. They can either be missed or left with some of the base exposed to show off the lovely colour gradations. I don’t need to order in wire or foam bases if I build up my stocks when opportunities and materials arise. No energy (apart from my own) used for manufacture and none (except my 🥾 🥾) for transportation, so that’s a win for sustainability too. Any flexible stems can be used in this way so before you get your shredder out to compost prunings, why not give it a go?

This popped up in my photo memories the other day.
A wild funeral sheaf for a farmer’s coffin: Barley from his field and wildflowers from the field margin.

Flowers at funerals can be a way of engaging people - either in rituals of placing flowers on the coffin as part of the service, or adding them to a garland or band encircling the coffin. I’m currently thinking about participative possibilities for a celebratory funeral at a natural burial ground - what lovely things have you done or what engaging ideas have you come up with?

Simple additions to soften the side view of a coffin. These small swags can be attached at the ends or between the handles on the the side and pack a floral punch way beyond their size. Sometimes they can be a nice alternative to more arrangements competing for space on top of the coffin if more friends and and family want to be represented by flowers also. You can even add little message tags to them to say your goodbyes.

Dear
We are delighted that you like our recent post about plastic-free funeral flowers.
The flowers in this arrangement are supported in woven Cornus and moss: the whole wreath is compostable.
It is perfect for a natural burial site: it will shrivel and decay back into the earth leaving nothing artificial behind.
Birds might steal the moss for their nests; bugs will make their home in it.
Sadly, the same can’t be said of funeral flowers stuck into your green plastic bricks and shapes which will remain in landfill polluting the planet for hundreds of years.

For funeral flowers approved by bees (swipe left) use your local Farewell Flowers Directory florist. This simple, natural tied sheaf included flowers from a well - loved garden to make it very personal for the family and it was accompanied on the coffin by R’s motorbike helmet as he’d loved riding around the countryside on his beloved bike.
