🐢🩹𝗠𝗘𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗨𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗩𝗘𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗥𝗬!🩺🦔

Having a family of Wee Critters, I rely on my incredible vet and vet nurses who provide amazing care for my little animal friends including vaccinations, routine health checks and they also look after us when anyone is feeling under the weather.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Discover CAFRE Greenmount campus to meet their Veterinary Care Support students.

It was fantastic to meet the next generation of veterinary professionals as they are busy developing their knowledge and skills. We chatted all about the species that are part of my family and focused on their current classroom learning about animal management and husbandry.

🐍𝗗𝗢𝗨𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗨𝗡 𝗔𝗧 𝗗𝗢𝗪𝗡𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗥𝗘!🦜

I love visiting the nursery classes at Downshire Primary School and I am lucky enough to be invited to do two visits each year.

In the winter our interactive animal education sessions focus on the topics that they have been exploring including changing seasons, amazing animal adaptations, hibernation and nocturnal animals.

This week I returned to visit the little explorers to chat about rainforest animals, marvellous minibeasts and to celebrate the world around us and the amazing animals that call it home.

One of the best things about doing two visits to some of our nursery friends is seeing how much confidence the little ones gain between visits.

A massive thanks to Downshire Primary and Nursery for making us so welcome!

I recently visited the nursery classes at Oakfield Primary School and Nursery Unit and I was delighted to see that the little explorers and their teachers had welcomed the parents and grandparents to join in with the interactive animal education sessions!

It was fantastic to see all of the little explorers meeting the animals and encouraging their family members to get involved too. There really is no age limit to experiencing the wonder of the wildlife that we share our world with and it was amazing to see families making memories together.

This week I visited the little explorers from Primary 4 at Moira Primary School! They have been studying the topic of 'rainforests' and we were delighted to be invited to deliver our 'Jungle VIP' interactive animal education session as part of their 'adventures'!

I arrived to find all of the P4's fully decked out in their explorer outfits. They had spent the morning making rainforest dioramas, enjoying some 'safari snacks' and exploring the great outdoors before I joined them in the afternoon!

We chatted about the world's rainforests and the amazing wee critters that call them home! We discussed where rainforests are found, the role they play, the plants and animals that call them home and our role in protecting them!

We had such a fantastic time and a massive thank you to everyone for making us so welcome!

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗲𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗡𝗜 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻?

This award programme, delivered by Autism NI , recognises organisations that are committed to a best practice approach to inclusion and accessibility. As part of the award, Autism NI delivered bespoke training to Wee Critters staff to ensure a greater understanding and to identify practical adaptations for a better and more inclusive experience.

In addition to the educational impact of our work we believe that animals and nature can have a positive impact on all of our lives. Our interactive animal education sessions provide a sensory experience which encourages learning, expression of emotions and this interaction can also promote relaxation. Through this work we visit schools, groups and events throughout the country.

1 in 20 children in Northern Ireland have a diagnosis of autism and through our role as an Autism Impact Award Champion we hope to provide an enjoyable experience for everyone!

This week I had the pleasure of visiting Primary 6 and Primary 7 at Maghaberry Primary School to deliver our 'Jungle VIPs' interactive animal education session.

This curriculum-based topic teaches little explorers all about the world's rainforests and the amazing wee critters that call them home! The little explorers got the chance to meet the high fliers and the leaf litter lovers of the jungle!

We chatted about where rainforests are found, the role they play, the plants and animals that call them home and our role in protecting them!

🐸💚𝗜𝗧’𝗦 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗦 & 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗚 𝗗𝗔𝗬! 💚🐸

We don’t need any excuse to celebrate our fantastic frog friends! Some of you will recognise Fiona, Frank and Philip our White’s tree frogs!

White’s tree frogs are also known as ‘dumpy frogs’ or ‘smiling frogs’ due to their appearance.

The White’s tree frog has a blue-ish green to emerald colour which can change shades depending on the temperature and colour of the environment!

⚠️Did you know - frogs are amphibians but almost a third of the world’s amphibian species are threatened with extinction. In fact. Over 150 species have become extinct since 1980!⚠️

Our froggy friends help us deliver curriculum-based topics including animal lifecycles, classification, rainforests, the world around us, endangered animals and more!

Here at Wee Critters I am lucky enough to meet explorers aged from 2 to 102!

I particularly love taking part in intergenerational experiences like this amazing visit to the Little Doves Childcare Centre and their friends the 'Silver Swans' from Cuan Court Supported Living.

It was fantastic seeing everyone spending time together, having fun and learning all about animals. We always say it doesn't matter how big or small we are - we can all change the world!

🦉𝗦𝗨𝗣𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗪𝗜𝗟𝗗𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗘 𝗢𝗡 𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗢𝗪𝗡 𝗗𝗢𝗢𝗥𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗣!🦔

I just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who came along to our interactive animal education sessions at HILLMOUNT Garden Centre on Sunday!

We had a fantastic time meeting all of the little explorers and their families. Through this event a total of £𝟰𝟱𝟬 was raised and donated to Ulster Wildlife!

Here at Wee Critters we believe that there are 'wee ways' that we can all change the world no matter how big or small we are. One way that we believe that we can all help is to 'love our locals'!

Wildlife on our own doorstep is in trouble with one in ten species at risk of extinction in Northern Ireland, from our prickly pal the hedgehog to the beautiful barn owl and from marvellous minibeasts to the brilliant birds in our backyards...but we can all help.

Maureen from Ulster Wildlife was on hand for the afternoon to teach everyone all about their 'Let Nature In' campaign.

A massive thanks to everyone who took part, to the amazing team at Hillmount and to Maureen from Ulster Wildlife. We had such a great day and what a fantastic outcome!

Legend has it that Saint Patrick banished all the snakes but here at Wee Critters, we have several Sssuper serpent friends that are important members of our family and who take part in our interactive animal education sessions including:

🐍Pablo the Pueblan milk snake

They help us to deliver a range of curriculum-based topics including the world around us, classification, rainforests, habitats, endangered animals and more!

💛📚𝗪𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗮 𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗧 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘀 '𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗢𝗻' 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻!🦉💛

We were delighted when Cancer Fund for Children approached us a few months ago to take part in their 'ReadOn' Campaign competition.

ReadOn is in its 25th year and is an initiative to encourage school children across Northern Ireland to read while also raising vital funds for the Cancer Fund for Children.

On Tuesday we had the pleasure of providing four free interactive animal education sessions at the ReadOn prize winning school, St Patrick's Primary School Holywood.

Little explorers from the primary school got a very special visit from Cool FM's Rebecca McKinney and also had the chance to meet 'Ollie the Owl' (ReadOn's mascot) in real life as well as some other amazing species that we share our planet with.

We unfortunately live in a world where many species of both animals and plants are on the brink of extinction. I truly believe that developing an appreciation of wildlife in our children and local community is a fundamental element in safeguarding the safety and future of our wildlife and environment.

This why I do what I do!

All of our sessions include our 'wee ways to change the world' and we firmly believe that no matter how big or small we are, we can all make a difference. We therefore support a number of conservation programmes in the wild.

We are officially ‘red panda guardians’ through the Red Panda Network, donating monthly to help secure a sustainable future for red pandas. My professional career over the last 20 years has focused on small carnivore conservation and the red panda is a species close to my heart. Unfortunately, the global population has declined by 50% over the last 20 years and there may be as few as 2,500 left in the wild.

We donated to the ‘sponsor an acre’ campaign to help protect 50 acres of orangutan habitat in the wild. The Orangutan Foundation protects the forest habitat of this incredible (and critically endangered) ape while also working with local communities and promoting research and education.

This week I visited the 1st Hillsborough Squirrels and a very special little explorer approached me before I started the session to give me a 'gift'.

Casper had been clearing out his toys and discovered this amazing little armadillo which he thought I would like.

One of our main messages at Wee Critters is that we believe there are 'wee ways' that we can all change the world no matter how big or small we are and Casper's lovely little act of kindness absolutely made my week!

My new armadillo friend now lives in pride of place on my desk and is a much loved member of the Wee Critter's family. Thanks Casper!

I had a fantastic time visiting this group of little squirrels this week. We chatted all about the world around us, the animals we share it with and the 'wee ways' that we can all help to make the world a better place.

🕷𝗕𝗔𝗖𝗞 𝗧𝗢 𝗕𝗨𝗥𝗟𝗘𝗜𝗚𝗛 𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗟 𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗘!🐭

Yesterday I posted some snaps of my visit to the little explorers at Silverstream Nursery but my morning was also spent visiting another special venue - Burleigh Hill House.

I'm always delighted to be invited back to Burleigh Hill House! Over the last few years I have had the pleasure of visiting on a number of occasions and it is always fantastic to see some familiar friendly faces and to get to know new residents.

One of the best parts of delivering interactive animal education sessions with my wee critter family is meeting different people within our community - from 3 years of age right up to 93! It's always amazing to see everyone interact and learn more about some of the amazing animals we share our world with!
