There’s an invasion of quite a different kind at Carrickfergus Castle this Sunday (15 June 2025) with our interactive animal education sessions! Join Allan the Explorer as he takes you and your little explorers on a wild adventure to find out more about the ‘wee critters’ we share our world with and the ‘wee ways’ that we can all make sure that species don’t become ‘history’!

Whether they cause a stink, look sharp or fade into the background, animals have their own unique ways to protect themselves!

Come along to learn all about the amazing ways that animals are adapted for survival in their habitats.

Check out Arthur the armadillo’s very own armour, feel the hedgehog’s sharp spikes, find out how a tarantula’s hairy bottom protects her from harm and join us for a fun, interactive and educational experience!

🦜’A-parrot-ly’ it was world parrot day yesterday but I couldn't let it pass without celebrating my little parrot pals! 🦜

Many of you will recognise my little parrot pals, Kiki-Dee, Coco and Kiwi the Jenday conures.

This amazing trio are the noisiest and the most mischievous of all of the wee critters but they are such amazing little birds and I am very lucky that they are part of my family.

World Parrot Day was started by the World Parrot Trust to highlight these remarkable birds and the dangers facing many parrot species in the wild.

My little feathered friends play an important role as ambassador animals for their species and help me to deliver a range of curriculum-based topics including classification, the world around us, Jungle VIPs, the edge of extinction and many more.

At Wee Critters we believe it's so important to inspire and connect future generations with our natural world. No TV show, book or movie can replicate the true beauty of nature and in a world where we are becoming increasingly disconnected from nature it is amazing to get the opportunity to share the wonders of wildlife in our own communities.

Just look at the reactions of these little explorers as they met and learned all about our incredible invertebrates.

I had a fantastic time meeting Primary 3 at St Bernard's Primary School. The little explorers have been learning about the marvellous minibeasts that we share our wee world with.

We discussed how minibeasts have adapted to protect themselves from predators, their vital role in eco-systems around the world and the 'wee ways' that we can all make the world a better place for all creatures - big and small!

I have had such a lovely week of school visits, meeting so many amazing little explorers and their teachers.

I recently visited Primary School Belfast's nursery classes. Some of the nurseries that we visit welcome us back more than once each year to focus on different topics and to meet different members of our Wee Critters family.

We visited the nursery classes in Winter and it was fantastic to see everyone again and to see how much their knowledge and confidence has grown in only a few short months.

🌿🐌𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗩𝗘𝗟𝗟𝗢𝗨𝗦 𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗕𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗦!🕷🌿

I have been having such a great time visiting classes across our wee country over the last few weeks.

I recently visited St Paul's Primary & Nursery School to deliver our curriculum-based topics of 'the world around us' and 'Marvellous Minibeasts'!

The teacher had requested this interactive animal education session to support their classroom learning about the incredible invertebrates that we share our wee world with.

𝘋𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘥 𝘈𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩

Many people grow up idolising superheroes, footballers or popstars but, for me, Sir David Attenborough was my hero and had a massive impact on my path into a career in zoology, conservation and now education.

I grew up devouring his books and television shows...hanging on his every word as he introduced me (and so many of us) to the wonders of the natural world.

One of the most exciting moments of my life (and I'm not even exaggerating) was visiting Harrow School in London for an event where Sir David Attenborough and Alastair Forthergill shared stories about their wildlife filmmaking experiences. I have never felt so starstruck in my life as when I was waiting for the event to begin and turned round to see my hero walk past me!

Everyone always thinks that their impact cannot be vast enough to make a difference but we can all help in 'wee ways'.

What we do at Wee Critters is on a local level but if we can inspire even one child and bridge that gap to the natural world then it is worthwhile.

I would like to wish my hero an amazing 99th Birthday and thank him for a lifetime of incredible work! I can't wait to go to the cinema to see 'Ocean with David Attenborough'. Will anyone else be watching?

Conservation takes many forms! Join us for a ‘rail’ fun day out and hop on board as we will be providing 45 minute interactive animal education sessions at Whitehead Railway Museum on Saturday 10 May 2025.

Find out more about the wildlife we share our world with, the threats they are facing and the ‘wee ways’ we can all change the world to make sure these incredible animals don’t become ‘history’!

Short onsite train rides will also be available to give you a taster of what it was like to be hauled by steam. You can then learn more about the railways of yesteryear and how they transformed society with a tour of the Whitehead Railway Museum.

I hope you all had a fantastic Easter break!

I decided to take a bit of time off too and had an amazing time relaxing and spending time with my family (both human and animal).

I am so excited to visit all of the wee schools that I am booked to attend this term. Here's some fun snaps of my recent visit to St Anne's Nursery School!

🐢🩹𝗠𝗘𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗨𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗩𝗘𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗥𝗬!🩺🦔

Having a family of Wee Critters, I rely on my incredible vet and vet nurses who provide amazing care for my little animal friends including vaccinations, routine health checks and they also look after us when anyone is feeling under the weather.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Discover CAFRE Greenmount campus to meet their Veterinary Care Support students.

It was fantastic to meet the next generation of veterinary professionals as they are busy developing their knowledge and skills. We chatted all about the species that are part of my family and focused on their current classroom learning about animal management and husbandry.

Thanks for making me and the wee critters so welcome and for inviting me to visit Greenmount! Best of luck to everyone in your studies.

🐍𝗗𝗢𝗨𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗨𝗡 𝗔𝗧 𝗗𝗢𝗪𝗡𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗥𝗘!🦜

I love visiting the nursery classes at Downshire Primary School and I am lucky enough to be invited to do two visits each year.

In the winter our interactive animal education sessions focus on the topics that they have been exploring including changing seasons, amazing animal adaptations, hibernation and nocturnal animals.

This week I returned to visit the little explorers to chat about rainforest animals, marvellous minibeasts and to celebrate the world around us and the amazing animals that call it home.

One of the best things about doing two visits to some of our nursery friends is seeing how much confidence the little ones gain between visits.

A massive thanks to Downshire Primary and Nursery for making us so welcome!
