July Bridal Bouquet.

My dahlias this year have not been great. Heavy clay means I have to lift them every year and the cold wet spring has made them slower than usual. So to get one of my all time favourites to flower just in time for R&Ps wedding last weekend was a joyful moment for me. Such a happy bouquet. Full of colour and twiddly bits that always make my heart sing.

A garden gathered, wild and white scheme for B&T

I gathered and curated the loveliest of ingredients to create these wedding flowers. I couldn’t be happier that Lauren, not only managed to capture such gorgeous moments for this wonderful couple, but took the time to capture the flowers so beautifully too.

The ceremony flowers were repurposed to frame the tipi doorway (swipe to see) and create another wow moment for this special day.

Buttonholes

Tiny details. Can be tricky to find the right garden grown ingredients. They have to hold up out of water, they need to be delicate but yet have impact. This one for R&P this weekend made me so happy. It’s a standing joke here that I can’t grow the fancy pansies that many of us British flower growers are loving. My stem lengths on them are terrible and really only suitable for garden fairy umbrellas. But I managed to get one long enough to include in Pip’s buttonhole and I couldn’t have been happier. So much so that I announced to him that he is my first ever pansy 🫣🤣 Luckily he took it well and embraced the buttonhole love.

Summer table flowers…

These dressed the table and brought a focal point for J&Js beautiful wedding breakfast. Filled with the scent of roses, sweet peas and herbs. Cosmos, snapdragons and grasses catching the light. All in the softest pinks and whites.

Missing the Icelandic poppies…

Reflecting on a Sunday afternoon and I realise I am missing the icelandic poppies now. I sowed mine early to secure them for spring weddings and they have stopped flowering now. I realise I wish I’d made a second sowing so I can still be harvesting them through the early summer season. Their paper like quality always steals my heart.

Just a little moment for Poppy.

More of this beautiful wedding to come but I wanted to giver her a moment. I know I keep saying this but this year’s couples have been incredible so far! Poppy was the kindest soul, undemanding and understated. It was an absolute joy to flower for her and Joe. Doesn’t she look utterly gorgeous! You do you and I’m right here with you.

I flowered a venue in the most beautiful neutrals and someone said to me how much they’d loved it but that I probably wouldn’t have approved of the big bold bright flowers seen at a wedding they’d attended earlier that year. So, just to make it clear I adore flowers. End of. They come in every colours under the sun and I am here for them all. Wild, free and seasonally grown. That’s my only requirement.

This bouquet was for L&K yesterday who had an intimate wedding with their nearest and dearest. Congratulations you two. Wishing you so much love and happiness together 💚

Happy Friday Everyone!

I just thought it was time to show my face again. Letting you all know I am still here. Swimming in wedding season and couldn’t be happier 🌸💚 I have been so lucky to have amazing couples so far this year and have many more gorgeous schemes to flower.

Sometimes it’s the small things…

Whilst wedding season is in full swing life gets a little sacrificed at times. Carving out time for family is so important to me. Right now it’s the simplest of things I’m grateful for. Like coming together to eat, taking a walk in the country side, a movie night all snuggled on the sofa. My family make this business work as much as I do and I am eternally grateful to them 🫶

These buttonholes of beauty were made for the gorgeous C&D at the weekend. Full of fresh and dried ingredients, giving me all the texture I love.

Happy bank holiday…

I am having a rare weekend off weddings but while I am out of office I thought it would be good to say hello👋

💚 I’m Cate. I live in Nottinghamshire with Mr GreenGate, my two teenage kids and our feral rescue dog. We bought a run down bungalow on a large plot in Covid and are slowly renovating our way through the house and garden. It’ll probably take us 20 years to do it all but wouldn’t change it for the world.

💚 I used to work as a therapist and in education. I’ve always grown flowers, fruit and vegetables since I can remember and my garden has always been my sanctuary. So, when the kids were young I made the decision to retrain in floristry, hoping to use as many homegrown ingredients as I could. Not knowing then how big the movement of British flowers would be.

💚 When I’m not working I am a total homebody these days. Happiest cooking in my kitchen, tending my garden or curled up with the family on the sofa. I love long walks in the countryside and dinner dates with friends and family.

Little Treasures.

I rarely grow La Belle Epoque tulips for weddings because the price of the bulb has become so expensive, but I do grow them just for me. However, when an event lands and the colour palette is just so perfect for them, I do sacrifice a few…I just can’t help it!

These ones made it home though and into this mini urn. Another treasure, holding a fond memory of hunting through bric-a-brac with last year. It just going past its best today. Probably my favourite stage. The forget-me-nots have lost their umph, a tulips head has fallen after being knocked, just one too many times, and the poppies will be dropping their petals any moment.

All the brights…

It was lovely to be reminded of this DIY package from a couple of years ago in one of yesterday’s consultations. Choosing a colour palette can be really daunting but my advice is always…you do you!

If whites is your thing, then do whites, if pastels are you vibe then do pastels. But if in your life you are drawn to colour then you do brights! Weddings shouldn’t be based on shoulds and coulds and social media or Pinterest (though don’t get me wrong the last two can be brilliant if used the right way!). Your wedding day should be about you two, a reflection of your personalities. It’s about capturing you in one of life’s most precious moments.

Spring or not to spring.

So it’s the Easter holidays here and the kids are off. If only the weather would be kinder and more…spring like. There are still a lot of clouds, rain and wet ground here. My cutting garden is starting to shoot but my own flowers are scarce right now. I am heavily reliant on my growing network in the East Midlands and some amazing UK growers/wholesalers to see me through these next few early events and weddings. Everything feels a little slower and I am trying to be patient. Not my forte!

Not pink daffodils

So these are definitely not pink charm daffodils. I ordered pink charm and I’ve got orange. The frustrating thing about growing bulbs and tubers is by the time you find out you have the wrong variety it’s too late! Months of tending to discover the disappointment.

So I’ve spent an hour with them in the studio, trying to decide if I can still love them (and obviously complain and order more pinks for 2025!). But all I can think is this design would look totally different with soft pink centred daffodils! Plus its made me crave a Cadbury’s cream egg. Anyone else?

Dahlia love 🫶

So these beauties do not start blooming until late summer for me. But the essential part about growing cut flowers for weddings is all the planning and preparations. Through winter I am gathering lists of what colour palettes I need, in which season, and plotting what to grow where.

Today has been all about the dahlias. I’ve been sorting through, splitting tubers, binning some and getting them started in the greenhouse. All the gorgeous peachy and pink tones are done. But there are all the whites and randoms colours I just can’t live without left to go. Like this beast here. Black Jack. I love dark dahlias and my boy is a Jack, so this one is forever a keeper.

March Brides.

So wedding season has begun here but we are very gently unravelling into March weddings with a few small, intimate celebrations. Considering how sleepy the cutting garden is right now it is still one of my all time favourite months to flower. I think because of the limitations, what is available feels very precious.

I promise, Spring is coming…

It’s been a very wet grey winter. Everyone I speak to keeps saying they’ve had enough now. One thing we have no control over is time. We will blink and February will be gone. March will begin and spring will be here.

I cannot wait to be flowering again. I’ll probably be moaning it’s too hot by then! Not long now.

Cherubs and weddings.

Just the cutest capture by from last June.

The kids are off for half term so it might be a bit quieter on here. I will be keeping an eye on emails, catching up on proposals, meeting with a fellow grower and hoping to start the seed sowing marathon if we manage a pyjama morning or two. Anyone else out there juggling kids and work next week?

A spring staircase installation…If you want a wow factor at your wedding then talk to your florist. They aren’t cheap, because they shouldn’t be. We have to create these on site, the day of your wedding, and clear out as if we were never even here at all. Sometimes with an incredibly tight turn around time (the tighter the timeframe the bigger the team required to pull these together!). But they are worth every penny. You will wow your guests and your photographer will capture amazing moments there, which you will treasure forever. This beauty is still under wraps.
