This is such a tough topic to talk about among parents as no one is ever going to agree!

But, did you know that my most popular blog post is actually the one I wrote 7 years ago about my children not being invited to their friends birthday parties?

Seriously, I get hundreds of hits a day because of this one post so it is obviously an important topic among parents and their children.

I wrote it when my eldest son was invited to one party and whilst attending that, the other parents were asking me how he was getting to the second party.

This second party, I knew nothing about and it turns out it was one of his best friends!

I was embarrassed at first, then angry and then humiliated as I really wanted to confront the parent at the time.

I didn't but after I asked why he didn't get an invite, her response was that they don't hang out as much and her son didn't put him on the invite list.

Fair enough but tell me beforehand so I'm not left hanging my head in shame!

On the back of this, I wrote this blog post about 6 reasons why your child may not have got invited.
I found that I was being quite precious about his invite when it was more about me than him, my hang ups and my expectations, when actually there can easily be more to it if we just take a breath and think about.

My Dad is my biggest inspiration.

Father's Day for me used to be difficult but now I see it as a wonderful opportunity to show off how amazing my Dad actually was.

Even at a young age, I would follow him around his music quizzes across the country, helping him out and being a part of his world.

It was because of him that I set up my party business, him being the the entertainment industry for over 40 years.

He was so passionate about music that is was in our lives from the moment I was born.

He took me home and played Buddy Holly's, Everyday, and that's why my middle name is Holly.

He would drive me to school with the windows open blasting out Capital Gold or classical music just to embarrass me.

He drove us all over the country when he hosted the biggest music quizzes going, from Wakefield to Hatfield!

He introduced me to Prog Rock hence my love for Pink Floyd and Genesis, he played me songs I would never have heard otherwise and still play to this day.

He was sadly taken far too soon by a global pandemic and sadly became a statistic when he deserved a huge send off that he never actually got to have.

One thing remains though, my Dad's legacy through me, my love for the same things as him and our family that are even closer now than we ever were.

It's the season of face painting at summer fetes, fairs and events so how can you be sure your child is face paint safe?

❤️If your child is aged 3 and under - don't put them in the face painter's chair, they're too young to be painted! Yes, face paint has age restrictions according to the manufacturers who make the paint and based on the FDA advice. Your child's skin is fragile at that age and opening them up to early face painting can increase their risk of future skin allergies.

🧡If the face painter is using art paint - don't put them in their chair! How to recognise what's safe paint and what isn't? They will have a professional kit, usually with all the colours on one paint (called one strokes). Look out for face paint brands on the lids such as Snazaroo, and Tag and look out for professional brushes. They will have lots of brushes rather than just one or two.

💛If the face painter doesn't change their water - if you notice the water is looking really thick and gloopy, don't put your child in the chair! Face paint water isn't necessarily dirty, it's just wet paint after all, but if the water is thick, awfully messy and doesn't look right to you, or you've noticed they haven't changed the water whilst you're in the queue (usually after an hour or two) then this rings alarm bells. If their water isn't changed, what else are they not hygienic with?

💚If your child has eczema, chicken pox, runny nose or visible skin rashes - don't put your child in the chair! A good face painter will recognise this too and has the right to refuse to paint your child. We don't want to trigger an further bad reactions and neither do we want to pass on anything contagious. I personally refuse to paint children with regular coughs too as it's not fair on me and my health!

This week, I am putting the spotlight on my 90 minute party package!

It's called The Not So Boring party because there is literally no time to be bored, I entertain straight through the hour and a half with no food break!

I then recommend having your food break at the end of my show when I am packing away.

This is a great option for smaller budgets, homes with not much room at home to have the full two hours or if you just prefer not to have food in the middle of your party.

You all know I love rainbows all year round and there is a reason why I chose rainbows as part of my business branding.

Not just because it looks so pretty but it represents EVERYONE.

I support those in the LGBTQIA+ community including Trans people and POC, I always have and always will.🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Putting the spotlight on my party packages so you can choose the right one for you.

The Whole Shebang does what it says, you can book ALL my services in one go!

That's my party games, magic, balloon animals, disco, bubbles and face painting all in a two hour party package.

The only stipulation is this is for up to 17 children only so that I have time to face paint all the children leaving no one disappointed.

This is a great package if you're having other forms of entertainment such as inflatables, soft play, mascots etc.

I also do more of these in the Summer as being in the garden gives the children enough to do without being too overwhelmed or bored!

I know it's not for everyone BUT there is a reason why I only accept payment in full before I entertain at your party.

In 2019, I attended a party that had paid their deposit and I was to pick up the rest of my fee on the day of the party.

When I got there, the Dad came up to me and said he'd pay me at the end.

I performed a two hour party for their son but when I left, Dad said he hadn't gone to the cash machine so can he pay via bank transfer later.

I had another party to get to after so I agreed and off I went, trusting that he would pay me.

He never did.

I met him twice (always in a public place but i shouldn't have done this alone) and I heard excuse after excuse as to why he couldn't pay me.

These excuses included his Dad had died and he was flying to America, his job forgot to pay him that week and other absurd excuses.

As a member of Equity, I could take him to a small claims court but then the pandemic happened and this threw everything out unfortunately.

Whilst one person has ruined it for everyone, it's probably not good business practice for me to accept cash on the day of your party anyway.

I've got no where to put it.
You don't want to be carrying wads of cash around at your party.
I don't really want to disturb you to pay me whilst you;re saying goodbye to your guests.

We are in a cashless society and I have made the process as easy for you as possible but by paying for your party a few days beforehand, this also guarantees that I will turn up.

A few of my customers haven't been happy with this because of trust issues and worrying that I'm a stranger who they are paying but it would ruin my reputation if I did that!

I would never let a child down if it can be helped.

Setting up your party venue does vary depending on the size and shape of the hall you have booked but here are some basic rules to make sure your party runs smoothly:

❤️Wherever the kitchen is situated, allow space for the entertainer to perform on the opposite side of this.

🧡Make sure you know where the plug sockets are to show your entertainer when they arrive.

💛Have a present table by the door so as your guests arrive, they can pop them there.

💚Don't put chairs around the sides of the room, have them in a row in front of the entertainment so parents can watch (a bit like watching a theatre show).
This also keeps the room smaller so children aren't tempted to run around a huge space.

💙With this in mind, also make sure there is enough space for the children to dance and play games.

💜If you're having a snack table for the adults, don't have this out until after the first half and away from the children as they'll be tempted to take from it and this creates a mess in the entertainment area as well as a huge distraction from the entertainer you've paid money for.

🩷If you're guests are having a sit down food table half way through, keep this on the other side of the room to where your entertainer is performing.

Just for the record, I have NEVER cancelled a party booking!
Neither have I never not turned up!
I have entertained with sciatica, the flu, a chest infection, and even a pulled muscle in my neck.

It's nothing to be proud of, turning up to a party ill, BUT it's not in me to let anyone down.

You could say I am a big people-pleaser but more so when it comes to my business and reputation.

I would hate the thought of a child having their birthday ruined just because I didn't turn up.

I've had parent's in the past call me up at the last minute because they've been let down on the day and I try to come to the rescue.

Which isn't ideal for you because you don't know who you're getting and have already spent lots of money and isn't ideal for me because I can't give you the care and attention your party deserves last minute.

What to do if your entertainer cancels on the day 👇

❤Try not to panic
🧡A professional will have a back up for you so wait to see if they have someone to step in.
💛If they don't, serve food first whilst you pop onto Facebook and plead for someone to come to your rescue, as that's the place a service is more likely to see your needs.
💚Google local entertainers too!
💙If in doubt, call Jelly Jade to see if I have any availability.
💜If I don't, I will pop a message out to my network to see if I can source someone for you.

How to prevent an entertainer cancelling on you 👇

❤Understand that life happens and it isn't the end of the world (although it's unprofessional, illness, accidents, and even family members passing are all a likely reason someone unintentionally cancels.).

🧡Book someone that you see regularly posting on social media (like me!) who has a good reputation and amazing reviews.

💛Don't book your friend, neighbour or school run Dad who says they'll do it for nothing - it's just not worth the freebie!

💚I know we can be expensive BUT you're not just paying for someone to entertain, you're also paying for them to turn up. Someone super cheap is unlikely to turn up if they get a better offer elsewhere.

We've been singing this song for centuries yet no one knows where it came from!

After some Googling ( because I'm no expert in the Happy Birthday song!), it turns out it was originally written bu two nursery teachers who needed a Good Morning song.

This formed the tune of what we now know as Happy Birthday To You and the lyrics came later.

Party food doesn't have to be as stressful as you might think and if you're looking for a quick and cheap fix here are some ideas: 🍨Fill party boxes with paccked snakcs such as raisins, chocolate bar, crisps, fruit and drink so you can give out one per child and there is no wastage. 🍨Order pizza from the nearest takeaway, they usually have special offers to cater for large or small groups of children. 🍨Don't worry about feeding the parents, it's all about the kids! 🍨Don't hand out snacks during your entertainment as it gets distracting and messy! 🍨Cut your cake to hand out at the end by singing Happy Birthday in the middle of your party. A-z Party Guide - D IS FOR DECORATIONS! These days, decorating a party venue is a grand and big thing with some amazing balloon displays and back drops! But if you're on a smaller budget and just want something a bit simpler, it can be done and has just the same effect. Here some tips for decorating your party: 🎀Card Factory supply helium for balloons you purchase with them and they do themed balloons too so you have lots of choice. 🎀Blow up your own balloons and put some on the front of your venue so your guests can find it easily when they arrive. 🎀I purchased a balloon arch that covered one wall of the room and booked an entertainer who stood under it and performed, giving a focus area to the venue. 🎀Pound shops do party decor too for a cheap yet effective way of making your tables look pretty! 🎀If the room is too big, a few helium balloons on your party tabel is enough to make it look party ready. Here's some top tips for having balloons at your party: 🎈If you have an entertainer, don't leave loose balloons all over the floor, it makes the kids feral! 🎈Put some balloons on the front of your venue to make it easier for your guest and entertainer to find you. 🎈Decorating the food table with balloons makes it fun for your guests. 🎈As an extra gift for your guests, Jelly Jade gives out balloon animals to everyone! 🎈Ask your guests when you invite them if they're OK with balloons, some don't like them popping or even the feel of them! 🚨Every Monday for the next 26 weeks, I'll be sharing my A-Z party guide with you!🚨 It includes lots of tips to help you on your way with party planning so today with start with A! 🤩AGE APPROPRIATE PARTIES🤩 When your baby turns one, that's usually the start of your party planning journey and these days, first birthday parties are a huge event and milestone. However, as your child gets older, just make sure your parties are appropriate to their age. 👶👶1-4 year olds usually prefer toddler style parties such as Music Bugs or Hartbeeps who provide entertainment for the age group. Soft play and inflatables are always a win for younger children too. 👧👦When your child starts school and starts to make new friends, a party that has an entertainer like me is the best way to go! Your entertainer will know how to keep the age group entertained from beginning to end and they are at an age where they have a longer attention span so it won't be money wasted. 👨‍🦰🧑‍I found when my son started secondary school, the parties then got few and far between and they just like to do their own thing! 📲Share this post with someone you know will find it useful.
