A gorgeously inspiring visit to John Massey’s wonderful garden today. It is both stunning and interesting. johns is open for charity on Saturdays throughout the year I highly recommend a visit.
It was lovely to speak with John who’s passion for horticulture is contagious and also with my mentor from my WRAGs training year back in 2019 who is always so generous with his knowledge and in giving me confidence when I need it! Thank you! 🙏

These beautiful buckets of blooms went out last weekend for a birthday party where the evening included cocktails, nibbles and flower arranging. Everyone brought a vase so they could take their flowery creations home with them at the end of the night. What a gorgeous way to celebrate a birthday!

Cosmos … one of my all time favourites!

I have been known to be a bit fickle about cut flowers 🙈 what’s top of my favourites list one year isn’t the next (well there are just so many to choose from!!) but cosmos has stood the test of time year on year, she definitely has my heart. This year we’re growing ‘Fizzy Rose Picotee’, ‘Purity’, ‘Double Rose Bonbon’ and ‘Apricotta’
Any other cosmos lovers out there?!
🩷🧡🤍

An early July bouquet… 🤩

Admittedly we have been having a little bit of a battle with the cold wet start and sooo many slugs! But these beautiful flowers have pulled through and are pulling me through too!
We’re hoping along with everyone else that we’ll get some much needed warmer sunnier spells soon to give the plants a boost and get rid of those slug problems!! 🤞🐌

Looking for a rose to look beautiful in the garden and in the vase?
My absolute favourite rose for cutting, David Austin ‘Queen of Sweden’.
She has long strong stems with few thorns and gorgeous upward facing soft pink cups. She also perfectly compliments the rest of the cutting patch at this time of year… Nepeta, Mint, Alchemilla mollis, Astrantia, Sweet Williams… 🩷

It has been a busy time preparing and planting up beds and I’m feeling at last like I might actually have a field of flowers again this Summer! 😅

A few weeks ago I found myself feeling slightly overwhelmed by the amount of work needed to catch up, wondering if it would be possible to get back on top of it all, but a couple of solid days work and things are feeling a bit back under control. Breathe!

As well as a whole load of weeding and mulching, the second round of Scabious, snapdragons, annual phlox have found their forever homes, and the first of the malope, strawflowers, rudbeckias and panicum too.

Even the apprentice was tired out after all that work! 😂

I’ve also been potting up the next round of cosmos and zinnia, growing them a bit bigger before planting out since the first round of zinnias having been almost all gobbled up by slugs! 🐌😥
Bigger plants = more chance of survival! 🤞
I am feeling it for everyone with slug problems out there. They have been greedy this year!!

A bucket of properly seasonal flowers picked this week on our farm ready to be arranged to go out to customers.
This week is celebrating British grown blooms in all their glory. No air miles in sight which means a hugely lower carbon footprint than their imported counterparts.
And just as importantly they are beautiful, with good vase life and often gorgeously scented which you don’t know you’ve missed until you smell them!
I can guarantee your local grower will be passionate about what they do and in providing high quality freshly picked flowers so if you’re ever in need of flowers take a look at www.flowersfromthefarm.co.uk and find your local flower farmer 💚

A really brilliant day yesterday meeting some other lovely and like minded flower growers and florists from coming together to create the mechanics behind what will be a beautiful letter display for the RHS Malvern Spring Show. I’ll be going back as a visitor on Saturday and can’t wait to see the final result as well as all the other gardens which were already looking fabulous as they were being busily put together!
Feeling very lucky to be have been able to see behind the scenes this year! 🙌

The tulips are still doing their spring thing! 😃

And the weather over the weekend has brought more out that are ripe and ready for picking, particularly the incredibly pretty variety in the second photo which I’m sure are ‘Foxtrot’ though the label seems to have washed off, can’t think why!

We’ll have bunches from £10 available again from tomorrow so do get in touch. x

British grown tulips, there’s nothing quite like them!

We’re growing a small number this year which should be available by the bunch in April. It always feels pretty magical to me putting a vase of beautiful tulips on the kitchen table after a long Winter! 🌷

This came across this photo that was sent to me by customer a couple of years ago and I think it’s perfectly captured!

January here is all about taking a bit of a back seat from the flower field and getting as many other life jobs done, knowing that in a few months time my attention will drawn to all things plant related!!
These little plant babies who are sitting quietly in waiting now will be needing more of my attention, seeds will need to be sown, beds will need to be prepped, and planting will need to be done as the start of another flowery season approaches.

Other life jobs currently include: decorating whilst actively ignoring piles and boxes of paperwork that need sorting 🙈

Do you have jobs that always make their way to the bottom of the list?!! 🫣

Wishing you all a very happy and restful Christmas🎄⭐️ X

Hello 👋 As we come the to end of November I thought I’d give a little overview of we’ve been up to over the last month or so! 🍂

In between 3rd Birthday celebrations, Pumpkin picking 🎃 and Fireworks…

The Dahlias have all been dug up, dried, and put into their winter storage sawdust box so they stay dry and don’t freeze (hopefully!)

Lots of annual beds have been cleared and perennials cut down (much more to do!!)

Our old shed has been relocated to the flower field, very happy about this! And we already have ladybirds hibernating in there which is great!

Ranunculus corms have been pre-sprouted, potted up and put in the greenhouse to get going over Winter. I’ll be keeping a close eye on the weather and any sign of frost everything in the greenhouse gets a layer of fleece to protect it from the coldest nights.

Tulips have been planted out into their beds as well as other Spring bulbs including Dutch iris and Alliums. I admit I have a few more to go which I’d been hoping to have done by now but the cold got the better of me the other day and I hid inside warming up instead!!

Hiding inside also means my house is at last getting a little more attention. I’ve been dabbling with a bit of plastering which I’ve found kind of like icing a cake 🎂 And satisfying too! Let’s see if it stands the test of time!🤞

And I think it’s ok to be getting excited for Christmas now too?! 🎄🔔🎄

It’s a wrap!

Over the last couple of weeks we’ve been winding down orders and now we have officially finished our fresh flower season for 2023… I’m not quite sure where it went!!

I can honestly say that (despite a wobbly start - dare I mention tulip fire again! 🙈) it has been the most enjoyable yet. Always because I have the absolute best customers 🫶Always because the flowers bring me a lot of joy 🌸 And because my little boy now thinks that toy diggers and sand pits are the best thing in the world… flower farm come play area 👌 We can both be in our happy place at the same time.

We are now over 4 years into our journey and every year we learn more and every year we strive to improve the next year… that is the lovely thing about flower farming, each year is a chance to put into practice what you’ve learnt the previous. And there is always the excitement of growing something new 😁 Hello 2024! 👋

And watch this space… I might even have some dried flowery bits and pieces (official terminology) on offer soon to continue the flowery joy through the rest of this year… 🍂 😄

A week of two halves…

As the weather shifts and the days are getting shorter we’re on the home run for fresh flowers and there’s a feeling of winding down.
And yet… at the same time, we’re sowing many of the hardy annuals which are just beginning their journey. They’ll hopefully germinate well and make it through the winter in the greenhouses, to give us a lovely early crop of blooms in June next year.

Things to sow now:

1. Nigella - pretty dainty flowers followed by brilliant structural seed heads

2. Ammi majus - lovely white floaty filler

3. Larkspur - spires in an array of colours

4. Snapdragons - great as a cut and come again crop for us

5. Agrostemma (Corncockle) - perfect to give that light and meadowy look (though a little warning.. they’re toxic to livestock including chickens and sheep so take care where you grow)

6. Achillea - great filler flower, a short lived perennial of which we sow fresh crop each year

What are you sowing in your garden or plot right now? 🌸

September in pictures 💐

I’ve been a little quiet on here as we actually managed to take a little family camping holiday!! 🏕️
I know, a flower farmer taking a holiday in September, madness 🙈 it was fabulous and we certainly lucked out with the sunshine.
It gave the field a moment to regenerate from some heavy picking which was great as I had some big orders to return to, (of which I took no pictures whoops!) clearly my head hadn’t quite got into the swing of things!

So here are some of the best picks in the field today
1 - Rudbeckia ‘Sahara’
2 - Aster ‘Monch’
3 - Annual phlox
4 - Aster - can’t remember the name
5 - Sunflower ‘Pro Cut Plum’
6 - Chrysanthemum ‘Avignon Pink’ just getting started
7 - Cosmos
8 - Dahlias, steadily doing their thing
