The first concert of the new season is on Sunday, 17 September, at 3 p.m. in the Cathedral, when Baba Yaga will perform an intriguing concert. Concerts are free but a donation is welcome (suggested amount £10). Karen Dufour, soprano and alto saxophone, and Gwen Sinclair, harp, met as students at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, forming the duo Baba Yaga to promote their instruments through this unusual combination. They play original compositions, transcriptions and arrangements, like their own of Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’, which they will perform for us in Dunblane.

The next concert is on Sunday, 5 March, at 3 p.m. in the Cathedral with an intriguing concert of music inspired by the music of the 18th century Scottish composer, James Oswald. The pieces commissioned by the Sequoia Duo (Alice Rickards, violin, and Sonia Cromarty, cello) convey the essence of Scotland's wild flowers in sound.

In harmony with the ecological theme of the concert, there will be a display of pictures and information in the Cathedral Hall by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, the Dunblane Allotment Group, Dunblane Development Trust and the Dunblane and Stirling District Beekeepers Association. Do call in before the concert starts and be inspired for your gardens!

Our next concert is this Sunday and it is certainly not one to miss. The Boneafide Trombone quartet promises to bring a colourful programme that will illustrate the amazing versatility of that under-valued instrument. Listen to their lyrical playing of ‘ Estrellita’ : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqJgmRBm2bE and the fun and frolics of ‘Frosty the Snowman’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqJgmRBm2bE.

The next in our season of concerts is coming up. Dont miss this:

The Korça Ensemble is giving a concert in Dunblane Cathedral at 3pm on Sunday 23rd October. Gent Koço, violin, Jenny Stephenson, clarinet, and Christopher Baxter, piano, formed the trio in 2015 through a shared love of chamber music. Each combine this with solo and orchestral work, and Christopher is also a much sought-after accompanist. We look forward to hearing the blend of timbres of this unusual instrumentation in the lovely Cathedral acoustic and in a programme that includes lyrical composers like Khachaturian, Gershwin and Ravel: www.dcag.org.uk This afternoon concert starts at 3pm and includes an interval for refreshments. Admission is by donation.

The Arts Guild is delighted to announce the return of Cadenza. A mixed voice chamber choir, it has a well-deserved reputation for quality and many of you will remember the musicality and clarity of this Edinburgh-based ensemble from its previous two visits. Led by musical director Jenny Sumerling, Cadenza’s repertoire is wide-ranging, and typically the programme for Dunblane encompasses such works as Handel’s invigorating ‘Zadok the Priest’ and George Shearing’s seductive ‘Lullaby of Birdland’. The concert is in the evening in Dunblane Cathedral on Sunday 22nd May, starting at 7pm. There are no tickets on sale but donations at the door enable the Arts Guild to keep putting concerts on.
