Perfect timing for Christmas ❤️

The wild ruscus, also known as “Shepherd’s Myrtle” is in full berry along the back boundary of our garden. It’ has crept into the garden through the pig wire from the neighbouring woodland.

It’s extremely prickly but has an abundance of scarlet berries bringing winter colour (especially when the holly berries have quite rightly been eaten by the birds!).

Fourth Sunday in Advent ✨

The last Sunday before Christmas; the big day approaches. Amidst the hurly burly of all the preparations, it’s so important to remind ourselves of the final and core message of advent; love.

Wishing you all a love filled Christmas 🤍

This beauty has journeyed north to County Durham; to the home of my son-in-law’s family. It’s become something of a tradition now, and a symbol of our two families’ union.

A welcome sight in the garden at the moment ; some beautiful bright pink cyclamen which I planted a couple of years ago and faithfully seem to return each year. Even after a few frosts, they’re still blooming in a sheltered position near the house. 🩷

Scandi Christmas Treats

A BIG favourite in our house at this time of year (since we discovered them on past winter holidays in Norway and Finland), these delicious little treats are called “chokladbollar” and are little oaty chocolate balls flavoured with vanilla and coffee, dipped in chocolate and rolled in coconut.

We think they look like little snowballs and a perfect treat with a festive frothy coffee! 🤍☕️

Third Sunday in Advent

Woolly warm socks and gathering lots of lovely materials for the last few wreaths to make for my family. I’m not wreathing commercially anymore, but I’m enjoying the familiar mindful process without the pressures that a floristry business can bring.

(I’m also sending energy and manicures to all the florists out there working hard to make everyone’s Christmas beautiful!)

Have a lovely Sunday, whatever you’re doing 🤍

Warm this winter

Adorning our front door is a traditional simple affair this year; British grown evergreens and dried bracken along with rose hips, pine cones and dried oranges to give that warm glow. 🧡

Thank you to for some foliage and rosemary !

Unusually - the diva arrives early

I plant my amaryllis bulbs the same time each year, and they always arrive at different times. Last year they didn’t debut until the New Year, and this beautiful gal has arrived a full fortnight before the big day.

(I have two more in bud, so they might just make Christmas!)

*No apologies for the music today (oh to be a teenager again).

Second Sunday in Advent - “Journey” ✨

The second Sunday of Advent coveys the message of journey. Whilst its original meaning was probably one of pilgrimage, any life journey is worth reflecting on as Christmas and the end of the year moves closer.

This Scandinavian style advent candle wreath seems apt today as we return from a few days journeying around Copenhagen, learning how the Danes winter well and enjoy the dark cold season. The main themes appear to firstly enjoy the cosy inside spaces we have, with warmth and light, good company and books, and secondly to get outside in ALL weathers (suitably dressed obvs!) and enjoy the invigoration of cold air, snow or rain on your face and the stillness of a grey blanket sky.

I hope your winter days will be filled with all these good things! 🤍

Happy Sunday 🤍

So Scandi

Wouldn’t be a trip to Copenhagen without the iconic colourful harbour buildings, the Little Mermaid (of Hans Christian Andersen fairytales fame), the stunning Marmorkirken and Christmas food markets.

Circles…

Instead of wreaths, enjoying beautiful endless circles today.

A visit to the Royal Naval College, Royal Observatory and the utterly beautiful Queen’s House in Greenwich.

Tulip planting at last! 🌷

I’ve been waiting for some frosty weather to chill the soil (to help prevent tulip fire) but then my last fortnight got silly busy! Anyway it’s finally happened and they’re in.

I was particularly grateful for the usual “snouts on” approach to planting assistance from the two of my furry friends ….not 🖤🖤

Advent ✨

A special Sunday; marking the first of the month of December, the beginning of Winter proper, and of course, the first Sunday in Advent.

Advent is the traditional way the run up to Christmas is marked, four Sundays when a candle is lit and a message communicated. The first Sunday signifies prophecy, or preparation. Other themes are journey, joy and the core message, love. Religious or not, it’s a lovely way to mark the busy season.

December 1st in our home signifies the switch to Christmas cups for all hot drinks (no exceptions!), to mark the anticipation, and today I’ll be making a wreath with my eldest daughter for our respective front doors.

Have a happy Sunday and start to the festive season! 🤍

Shelter

Despite the recent cold snaps and stormy weather the ranunculus for next spring are tucked up outside in their little houses and thriving. They were pre-sprouted in the greenhouse and then planted out a few weeks ago.

A big thank you to my lovely other half Mr B who weatherproofed the tunnels. Ranunculus really are one of my most favourite flowers of the year, and their little corms so precious that they’re worth pampering.
