Fantastic views from the Winter Cross route this morning. Coupled with -3C, truly breathtaking!

The floods are gone, if the weather holds, crisp dry trails await you in just over two weeks.

I was checking out the final pit stop (45km) at Soberton Village Hall, perfect for your teas, coffees and toilets.

Midnight Marathon pace groups:

To help keep you course for a 5 or 6 hour run, we are most grateful to Sarah Zacal who will be pacing the 5 hour group, and to the very patient Louise Griffin who will be pacing 6 hours.

Both are very experienced ultra and marathon runners, so you’ll be in good hands.

Louise will start at 8:30PM, Sarah at 9PM.

Anyone in the race is most welcome to join them for all or some of the full-moon night run.

Winter Cross - course marking report. As expected, the considerable rain of the last few days has made for a challenging course in places - especially leg2.

Take extra caution when descending Salt Hill and Old Wi******er Hill - especially on the way back. We have the worst case of a smooth slippery layer on top with firmer ground underneath. I did manage to run all of it, cautiously at times, except for the Old Wi******er Hill steep descent (heading back - SouthEast).

That was just silly in a pair of average trail shoes; something with lugs (Mudclaw, Speedcross etc.) would probably have been better, but nothing short of spikes is going to have much grip there. Be super careful, just use it as a couple of minutes recovery.

Mostly, even on the grass and muddy bits, there is good ground to be found - e.g. in the longer grass. In any case, most of the course is gravel or tarmac runnable sections.
The puddle 500meteres after the start is big (see photo). You will get wet feet, and little point changing shoes after leg 1 into dry shoes because after 1 mile, you're back in large puddles again!

Winter Cross status: We are keeping a close eye on any change in the Covid regulations of course, and have a plan in place if we are moved back into restrictions similar to those under which we successfully ran the QE Marathons 2020 & 2021 (under the 'rule of 6' etc.).

For instance, it may mean moving the event HQ outside, discouragement of drop-bags and an open start, but the running part of it should be unaffected.

We've had quite a few people asking when entries will close, and we'll keep them open until late Christmas Day so that when the post-dinner guilt and/or bravado kicks in, you can enter then.

We may just run out of 70k places, but should be OK for 50k places.

Winter Cross medals have arrived, stunning both front and back.

Raceday is December 28th, but almost all places in 70k are already taken and the 50k is filling faster than ever before.

It's probably best not to leave it until the last minute to enter!
