Bug Roadshow

Bug Roadshow I used to take my Bug Roadshow to schools and nurseries to educate children on the beauty of bugs and their importance, but I have now retired.
(35)

I will still be available however for after-school bug clubs, bug hunts, moth nights or anything bug-related.

The Large Copper Butterfly, sub-species Lycaena dispar batavus which was introduced from Holland in 1927 at Woodwalton Fen in Huntingdonshire, to replace our native species Lycaena dispar dispar which was exterminated in about 1850 when they drained the fens where it lived. At Woodwalton Fen it died out in about 1985 when it stopped being bred and released to supplement the colony. So it is now only kept going in captivity by a few breeders! There are two eggs at the butterfly's feet so hopefully it will continue!

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all of my friends and family!

I met a few very timid children on Sunday, so timid that nobody wanted to hug a bug! Eventually after a lot of encouragement they started to hold them - some even held them with their noses! Even one little girl who wouldn't hold anything eventually held an egg and a dead Ghostly Silkmoth (very apt name!). Well done all for being so brave!
