First made wreath of the season and a gorgeous big one which I deliberately kept natural greens with 6 different types of foliage. Trimmed with a green velvet bow, it will look stunning on a wonderful big door. For sale tomorrow and they have a Swiss cheese special event going on too so not to be missed.

Satisfying day getting all the dahlia tubers packed up and stored away. I found these fabric bags that someone gave me a while ago and made the job so much easier as I could put the same variety in a bag with a label and not have the worry about the labels falling off.
I then pack in crates with horse bedding wood shavings to keep them frost free but there will be a little bit of air flow. If the weather gets really cold I will give them some extra blankets or put a candle heater over night.
And just as I finished I had a call from my daughter to say she’d been head butted by a horse at work and has a hole right through her lip, so I’m now watching her being stitched up after 3 hours in A&E. such is the variety of life.

The big dahlia clear and dig is done. I only do this every 2-3 years, it’s a huge job to dig, clean, dry, and store, then plant again next year. But it needs doing to divide and refresh them and so I can assess which varieties are working and need more of and which to get rid of.
They are now drying out in the green house and over the next few days I’ll divide and pack them for winter storage.
There’s a few frosts forecast for next week so I need to get on with it.

The perfect autumn day, still and warm enough to work in a t- shirt. I’ve had such a positively productive day. Grass cut (hopefully the last time) dahlias all cut down, perennials potted on and the ranunculas all planted out. They have sprouted so well and it’s great to be getting out such healthy looking plants. These will be given a low tunnel to protect them through the coldest weather and will produce gorgeous blooms in May.

Yesterday was the most wonderful experience working in a stunning venue Layer Marney Tower on a creative shoot curated by Emma Powell. Working with Emma and a team of incredible creative women we brought together Emma’s vision of a dark and moody romantic fairytale. And for this one I brought together my past and present careers-creating the florals but Emma also asked if I could make an outfit. I loved designing and making this 50s inspired coat, skirt and blouse, rummaging though my stash of fabrics. Emma’s inspired eye for colour is so fabulous to work with. I’m so looking forward to seeing the finished photos but I’m still enjoying these behind the scenes ones capturing the fun of the day.

Sadly I think these will be the last bunches for this year. We had a frost last night which will probably have finished off the dahlias. It’s been an amazing year and I am so grateful to have the support of everyone at the deli and all the lovely people who buy my flowers. When I see someone walking along the street clutching a bunch it does give me a little thrill that someone has appreciated them enough to buy.
Next stop-Christmas wreaths which will be available from end November.

Sometimes flower colours just mix together and create WOW ! I’d like to say I chose these myself but i cut what I had, a bit random with some delphiniums thrown up late in the season, nature just doing its own thing and I’m very happy for her to take the credit.

Amazing crop of physalis this year and the bunches for drying at home sold like hot potatoes yesterday along with the limoniium, so I’ve restocked today. Definitely makes everything feel a bit autumnal but lots more sun coming this week so I’m feeling very motivated to keep going with the stack of autumn jobs.

Oh the glamour! It’s a life of contrasts- last week lying by the pool sipping champagne in Croatia in 32’, this week back in jeans and wellies crawling around under the dahlias making sure they all have labels. This is a really important job which needs to be done whilst they are still flowering because however much you think you’ll remember which is what variety, once the frost hits they will become completely indistinguishable and any odd ones in a row will be unidentifiable. It’s especially important this year as I’ll be digging them all up and I am working out which I’m going to keep and which are not performing or are not as usable. Which of course will give me room for new varieties next year.
