Storytime: on 24 February 1809, Theatre Royal Drury Lane was sadly destroyed by fire (for the first time... It would suffer the same fate 101 years later 💔).

Richard Sheridan, the playwright and then owner of the theatre supposedly watched the flames from the street while sipping a glass of wine, and said ‘surely a man may be allowed to take a glass of wine by his own fireside.'

It's now been five years since we first began our ambitious project to reimagine the historic Theatre Royal Drury Lane for the modern day ✨

Under the leadership of award-winning architect Steve Tompkins, the restoration plans for The Lane was not only to bring the building's original features back to life, but to focus on the future with a nod to the past.

One of the key projects of the restoration was a complete remodel of the auditorium, creating wider seats, more legroom and better sight lines in an effort to bring the performer and the audience closer together.

The world’s oldest theatrical tradition, the Baddeley cake ceremony, takes place on Twelfth Night (5 or 6 January), and dates back to the 18th century.

Robert Baddeley was a pastry chef who became an actor and spent most of his career at Drury Lane. When he died he left £100 for cake, wine and punch and stated ‘it is my request the ladies and gentleman performers of Drury Lane Theatre will do me the favour to accept on twelfth night every year in the Green Room’.

The custom has continued to be observed since 1796 at Drury Lane, where the assembled cast drinks a toast to Baddeley.

The cake is always a homeage to the show being staged at the time, and the punch is made by the theatre manager from a secret recipe kept under lock and key, enjoyed by the cast post-show ✨
