BLOOMIN’ SELFIES

I’m definitely not a fan of the selfies but, deep breath - I’m getting better at sharing more behind the scenes stuff and the not so glamorous work that happens most of the time!

I spend a fair amount of time in my studio making, making bouquets, making dried wreaths, kits and mini bunches. I keep my dried flowers in the house as they need a little bit of comfort ie not damp conditions so they’re boxed up, bunched and hung upside down or put in vases. My house is full of dried flowers detritus… Wherever they are, I try and keep them out of the sun as this saps the natural colour - something to bear in mind when you buy dried flowers - don’t put them in a window or sunny spot!

Dried flowers are great as they last a long time time, are transportable, package and post well and enable me to use all my flowers therefore creating less waste.

I’ll be posting a couple of new things on my website this week, as well as new workshop dates for you to create with fresh flowers, dried flowers and lots of lovely foliage.

Keep ‘em peeled….👀

GOOD TIMES

Making things with flowers is LOT of fun, I know what you’re thinking - you would say that, but it’s definitely true. I’ve delivered many workshops over the years and the universal truth is…

* being creative makes you feel calm and relaxed
* workshops are a great way to enjoy quality time with friends
* you always learn something new
* everyone makes something beautiful to take home and cherish

After trialling a few private workshops with friends, I now offer a range of flower classes you can host in the comfort of your own home or a venue of your choice. Using British-grown fresh and/or dried flowers, you can have fun with a close group of friends and make flower-filled memories together!

My classes are a great way to bring folks together for celebrations, hen do’s, baby showers and birthdays or simply because you fancy a get together, minimum group size is 5.

So, if you’re planning a special event and want to create flower crowns, make a bouquet of vase arrangement, table decorations for a party or wedding or celebrate the seasons with a beautiful handmade wreath then let me know.

I’ll bring the flowers, the know-how and all the equipment you need for a fun few hours faffing with flowers.

Get in touch to find out more, Happy Friday!

✨GRATITUDE✨

January is always a time for reflection, to look back and think about what went well and what could be improved, personally and professionally. I’m feeling grateful to have the job I do for many reasons:

🌱flexibility - I can fit it around the life I want to lead, having family time and doing things I enjoy like wild swimming and running

🌱creativity - I love putting my creative brain in gear, playing with colour, form and floral mechanics

🌱connectivity - connecting with like minded growers, creatives, my customers & clients - we all unite with our love for beautiful flowers

🌱fresh air - after working in an office for many years, being able to work partly outside, in my shed, on the plot or in the studio, the variety keeps me sane and being out of doors keeps me connected to the seasons

The least favoured parts of what I do…

✨finance - numbers, numbers, numbers - I have to force myself to sit down and focus on the financial elements of running a business. It’s essential and important, I get it, but I just find it a bit boring!

✨marketing - having worked in various marketing roles for many years, it turns out marketing yourself is the hardest thing ever! It’s a process, and I’m trying to get better…

The thing is, none of us are perfect but we can try to be our best selves. Life is a constant juggle but that’s what makes it fun right? Happy Thursday!

BACK • TO • THE • BEGINNING

Hey, a little intro…I’m Hollie, a florist grower who started Alchemilla Floral at the end of 2018. I worked in marketing for many years and fancied a change so I did a floristry course and got stuck in. It’s been an incredible journey with lots of ups and downs but I absolutely love what I do!

I’ve always grown flowers and vegetables in my garden and now I grow flowers on a small plot to sell each growing season, May to September. Here I am just before having my daughter in the summer of 2019… just before Covid hit.

I’m based in Wakefield, West Yorkshire - just up the road from The Hepworth Wakefield, the world-renowned art gallery and grow flowers on a small plot 10 minutes from my house!

I sell my home grown flowers in the form of bouquets, subscriptions, for weddings, farewells and events May to September as well as carefully sourced British flowers from other growers, locally, or from Lincolnshire and Cornwall. I occasionally create designs using imported flowers from Holland in the winter months when UK grown flowers are scarce.

I care about where the flowers and foliage come from and want my customers to have the best blooms. I love working with British flowers as they’re quite often unusual and quirky and smell great too.

Want to stay in touch? You can sign up to my newsletter on my website for monthly offers, news and ramblings from my plot…

Happy Wednesday!

It takes a while to form a new habit. Hands up if you’ve vowed to drink more water, eat less chocolate, move more this year? It takes time right?

The start of this year I’ve committed to spend more time thinking about my business each month, and in particular the flower farming element of what I do and how I can expand increase the availability of my locally grown flowers this year. Thanks to Rebecca I’ve carved out some time each week to go back to business fundamentals and look at all aspects of my floristry business and the flower farming aspect and plan out the growing year.

Step by step, I’m spending time thinking strategically and committing my plans to paper - not just dreamy aspirations that float around in my head, actual plans and monthly actions.

There’s something about writing things down that makes you commit to doing it, and you need to do what works for you and as a sole trader I’m finding the structure and homework really helpful with a bonus element of connecting with other growers!

I’m feeling excited and motivated about the year ahead…💪

A new year can mean new habits, doing away with the old and bringing in a few changes to create joy and happiness…

Being close to nature always does the trick for me, having flowers around me reminds me how beautiful the natural world is. Planting a seed and watching it grow is a thing of wonder, I remind myself of this throughout the seasons to keep me keep me connected, grounded.

Despite the freezing weather, I’m dreaming of warmer days and this summer, you can have a bunch of happiness delivered to your door with my ‘best of British’ flower subscription, freshly cut and wrapped just for you.

Enjoy 6 bunches of my finest home grown flowers over 6 months (May to September) which is a great gift to yourself, for your office or a friend. You’ll be supporting my small independent business, helping pollinators, and having minimal impact on the planet.

Talk to me for more info or a bespoke subscription or check out my website for all the options. Happy Saturday folks!

W I N T E R

My little garden friends are very busy in the sunshine today foraging for food. The garden seems like a hive of activity despite the snow and Baltic temperatures. Inside, plans are being hatched, a whole year stretches ahead and I have lots of ideas to put into reality...

2025 for me is about doing more of what you love (and less of what you don’t, within reason…) and connecting with even more people through flowers. If you haven’t already done so, sign up to my newsletter on my website alchemillafloral.co.uk for regular news, offers and titbits from behind the scenes.

The temperature is really going to drop tonight so stay warm and take care in the ice.

A new year and lots of little green shoots appearing all over the garden.

I hope everyone had a restful and gaping Christmas, hers to 2025 and another year of flowers, weddings, workshops, growing and creativity!

I’ll be open as usual next week but in the meantime, I’m embracing the cold wintery days with dog walks, comforting food and cosying up by the fire.

How much fun was that!

I’m always amazed at how creative my workshop participants are, I bring the foliage, the bits, the bobs, and a little know how and wow… Hydrangea and hops, teasels and ivy, spruce and conifer, we took inspiration from a woodland walk to create an individual statement arrangement for indoors.

This afternoon was a wonderful way to pass a few hours and create beautiful centrepieces to celebrate winter. Light a candle, get cosy and enjoy all this season has to bring, today very high winds, tomorrow freezing temperatures so maybe a good idea to stay indoors…

Thank you to everyone who’s attended my workshops this year, I loved spending time with you all, here’s to more creativity in 2025!

✨ S O L S T I C E ✨

Today is the shortest day, the winter solstice. From this point onward, the nights draw out and we get more a little more light each day.

Today, I’m celebrating the light with a winter solstice workshop - something to get us through the dark days as we look forward to longer days. I’ll be having a dip in the lake with friends to mark this weekend as a special moment in the year.

I’m looking forward to brighter, longer days, seed sowing and a little planting guided by the phases of the moon. Look out for future solstice workshops, coming soon….

Whatever you’re up to today, enjoy! 💫
