The Hitchin School of Dance (formerly The Granville School of Dance) was founded by the original Principal, Mollie Gilbert. We shall be celebrating 70 years of providing dance classes in Hitchin in 2024! We are proud to be Hitchin’s longest established dance school. Lorrayne Spindler took over as Principal in January 2009 after Mollie’s retirement, and now the school has been passed on to Gabriell

e Hammond, a former student of both Mollie and Lorrayne. We hold classes in ISTD Ballet, Tap, Modern as well as Lyrical/Contemporary, Jazz, Street & Technique, and our adult classes in Ballet & Tap. We train students for exams as well as doing our bi-annual show and we've had many students go on to pursue careers in dance. You will have a very warm welcome and Hitchin School of Dance.

We have 6 fabulous classes on offer for adults at HSD.

Dance along to your favourite show tunes in our west end jazz class, tap your troubles away in one of our three tap classes or work on your posture, poise and pointy toes in our ballet classes. We do work hard! But, our classes are relaxed, non judgemental, full of laughter and most importantly, are about sharing a love of dance!

Our adult classes are invoiced half termly so there is no better time to sign up for a free trial, ready for after the half term break.

It puts the biggest smiles on our faces when we hear how much the students enjoy their classes at HSD.

We shall be at the Hitchin Youth Showcase in the town square, Saturday 28th September from 10am. Come and have a chat and find out about our school and the classes we have on offer.

Some of our younger ballerinas will also be doing a little performance at 11:20

Our NEW Mini modern & Jazz class starts Thursday 12th September at Lucas Lane Sports Club

A class for your 4-5 year olds to learn leaps, kicks, turns and dance to their favourite songs.

Dancing helps to develop balance, co-ordination, patience and creativity (amongst lots of other things!)

Our Street/Commercial classes at HSD start with a warm up, practicing corner work, tricks and moves before finishing with learning a routine which we improve on each week.

ADULT CLASSES AT HSD:

Dance is great for improving posture, balance, muscle tone and strength, flexibility, coordination as well as general physical and mental wellbeing.

Our classes are fun, friendly, relaxed & sociable (although we do work hard too!)

Mondays @ Tilehouse Street Baptist Church: Inter Tap 7:00-8:00pm

Tuesdays @ Tilehouse Street Baptist Church: Jazz/West End 7:00-7:45pm

Tuesdays @ Lucas Lane Sports Club: Pre-Inter/Back to Ballet 7:45-8:30pm

Wednesdays @ Tilehouse Street Baptist Church: Inter Ballet 7:45-8:45pm

Thursdays @ Lucas Lane Sports Club: Inter/Adv Tap 7:30-8:30pm

All classes are £6.50, paid for half termly and in advance.

It was lovely to see so many of our students in the Gym and Dance Display at Hitchin Girls School (Mrs Gabbi was in it when she was in year 7&8….16years ago!) Well done to everyone involved, it was a fabulous evening

We are excited to offer three FREE dance sessions to adults and anyone aged 16+ on Tuesday 2nd, 9th & 16th July @ Tilehouse Street Baptist Church.

As we approach a busy exam period for lots of our students, it’s important to take time away from sitting and revising and to continue with a routine.

Dancing and moving your body has a direct positive impact on your brain and improves your concentration and mental performance.

Classes at HSD are a safe space to take your mind off school and the pressures we may feel from life. It is a place to dance, laugh, relax and learn in a positive and enjoyable environment.

As always, our teachers don’t “just” teach dance. They are there to support, encourage and listen to everyone who walks through our studio doors at HSD. We are also very fortunate to have fantastic students who are more than happy to chat to and help other students in the school whatever age or class they attend.

Whilst exams and revision are very important, so is looking after our mental and physical health.

Lots of love and luck to anyone taking exams over the next few weeks 💙🖤

Our Story

The Hitchin School of Dance (formerly The Granville School of Dance) was founded by our original Principal of the school, Mollie Gilbert, over 60 years ago. We are proud to be Hitchin’s longest established dance school.

Lorrayne Spindler took over as Principal in January 2009 after Mollie’s retirement, and now the school has been passed on to Gabrielle Hammond, a former student of both Mollie and Lorrayne. We have built a wonderful reputation over the years, for providing a high standard of training in a friendly and happy environment. The school continues to go from strength to strength.
