Refreshing your floral skills and learning new techniques including sustainable methods is important to any florist who wants to keep up to date with the latest designs and trends. It’s a great way to find inspiration and feel more motivated!

This is exactly what Becki wanted to achieve with a 1:1 workshop on sustainability eco friendly designs, to introduce this style of designs into her daughter’s shop

Wishing Becki and Katie every success at Harper Rose Flowers this summer.

Please get in touch if you are interested in 1:1, 1:2, or private group workshops. These can be half day, or full day and all tailored to your own requirements. Suitable for florists, flower arrangers and growers of all levels and can be tailored for beginners too.

After getting myself in a social media pickle yesterday, I posted the wrong National Florist Day photo.

It should have been-
HOW I LEARNT MY PROFESSION. Which matches the text.

Thank you to you all, who read yesterday post and for the lovely comments you made.

HOW I LEARNT MY PROFESSION.
🌿 My personal journey to becoming a professional florist.

🌿At 16 I faced the decision what do after GCSEs 🤔
I was strong on creative skills, enjoying art and textiles, and loved gardening and nature. How was I to combine these enthusiasms to build a creative career? A Saturday job in a florists shop gave me the seed of an idea! Floristry is a form of art using flowers as your medium.

I trained at
🌿Broomfield College Derbyshire 2 years’ full time
🌿The Welsh College of Horticulture 2 years’ full time with 1 year’s work experience in Jersey.

🌿After college I gained more experience working in Jersey, the Greek Island of Rhodes & The Cayman Islands. I then settled down in Essex to teach floristry at a Writtle College University, using my skills and experience to give something back to trainee florists and the industry. With the opportunity to teach floristry in Japan and South Korea.

🌿During this time I completed my ICSF & NDSF level 4 & 5 floristry qualifications and Certification in Education.

🌿Now I have a home studio in Essex to share my love for floristry, developing eco-friendly sustainable techniques, and offering sustainable floral workshops. I create floral displays for weddings and other special occasions, as well as freelancing for other florists in the region.

🌿Floristry has been the ideal career for me, with a huge variety of work and a commercial angle. I was told by the careers teacher at school that I would just be working in a little back street florist shop! While there have been some challenging times e.g hard work on freezing cold early mornings scrubbing smelly buckets, the good aspects have made it all worthwhile and that why I 💚 love being a florist!

🌿There are lots of opportunities out there if you actively pursue your floral ideas and develop your skills, you never stop learning! 💚🌿💚🌱💚

Flowers have natural endorphins and are known to stimulate several chemicals like dopamine, oxytocin and serotonin in our brains. These are the ‘happy’ chemicals and whenever we see or receive some pretty flowers our brain instantly recognises the beauty and goodness.

Who ♥️ loves an urn arrangement?

Make a statement at your wedding to create a lasting impression. One large design works better than lots of small/medium sized designs. It creates impact and makes a great photo backdrop for you and your guests.

More smaller compact designs on your reception tables will help balance your budget. Nobody will miss a larger table design as your guests can more easily see and talk to each other! Especially if you have already created a ‘Wow’ with your statement design.

Wishing our dear friends Sisi and Hamish, Happy 5th anniversary.
I had the honour of creating their floral designs and attending their wedding in the Mediterranean Bio Dome at the Eden Project in 2019. What an amazing day we had.

🌱The Eden Project required the designs to be made using eco-friendly mechanics without the use of traditional green floral foam. I used chicken wire, which is reusable.

This was one of my first foam free weddings and I never looked back!

PEONY season is nearly here, starting in May for a couple of months. 💕

Who does not love a peony! 💕
An abundance of soft ruffled petals waiting to burst from a sphere shaped bud, with soft summery scent. So many shades of pink, peach, magenta, cream and white to choose from.

I am looking forward to peony season and using them in my May/June* workshops in the studio to create beautiful designs.

Come and join the peony fun !

What type of top table setting would you like at your wedding reception?

What size and shape of table - long, round or sweet heart shaped? What floral arrangements? The choice is yours!

🤍Some ideas:
🌿Long sweeping table runner arrangement
🌿Central cascading arrangements
🌿Garlands of foliage
🌿Single or groupings of bud vases
🌿Meadow arrangement in front of the table
🌿Re-use the bridal party bouquets in vases
🌿Foliage neatly arranged across the table
🌿Lanterns
🌿Tea lights

Choose the style of design that reflects you as a couple and suits your budget. To save money consider using the designs in your ceremony area first before moving them to the reception.

Swipe to see a few examples.

How to look after your Mother’s Day flowers from HSFD

Hand- tieds
🌸Remove wrapping ASAP allowing the flowers to breath - recycle tissue, paper, pot and box.

🌸Leave stem tied under the wrapping.

🌸Cut 1cm off stems at angle, and compost trimmings.

🌸Add flower food to your clean vase. Mix with tepid water as instructions on packet. To keep bacteria at bay.

🌸Keep away from direct heat (radiators, sunshine) and draughts

🌸Top up and refresh water regularly.

🌸When finished compost and clean vase ready for next time

Basket arrangement
🌸Water regularly, put on draining board to water in case of spillage.

🌸Alternatively add 3-4 ice cubes daily. Let them melt.

🌸 Keep away from direct heat (radiators, sun) and draughts.

🌸When finished, compost flowers and foliage. Fibre Floral (the new brown floral foam which HSFD uses) is commercially compostable. Place in green recycling waist bin for collection.

🌸Green floral foam is NOT compostable and as a single use plastic must go in general waste.

🌸Re use, recycle or repurpose your basket.

Enjoy your flowers and thank you for supporting my small floral business.

Your bridal bouquet is the most important bouquet you will hold.
There are many styles, which one is right for you?

Think about
🤍Traditional and classic look
🤍A natural rustic look
🤍Just picked’ country garden
🤍Lots of flowers tight and compact
🤍Lots of foliage with texture
🤍Loose, open natural
🤍Contemporary look
🤍Single or mixed types of flowers
🤍Sustainable, eco-friendly flowers

Other considerations
💕Shape of bouquet - round, cascade, asymmetrical
💕Style of dress
💕Favourite flowers
💕Colour theme
💕Relaxed, informal or formal
💕Style of venue
💕Indoors or outdoors wedding

Lots to think about! That’s where an experienced, qualified florist can help, guide and give you the advice that you need.

Thinking of different seasonal colours themes for your wedding?

How about shades of orange, inspired by nature - sunrise & sunset, fruits flowers & berries, autumn leaves.

🍑Soft peaches & apricots for spring
🍑Coral & salmon for summer
🍂Warm tangerine & rusts for Autumn
These could be part of your flower colour theme.

These colours create a lovely colour scheme that can complement sage green & pale blue bridesmaids dresses as an alternative to the more usual champagne, terracotta and navy complementing colours.

Pantone colour of the year for 2024 - peach fuzz 🍑
