So excited to be back in action for their traditional celebrations on 10 Feb from 11.00-16.00. We’ll be frying up a storm with our signature Malaysian char koay teow and a selection of favourite CNY snacks.

Limited pre-orders of yee sang (prosperity salad) £24 and drunken chicken with jellyfish £16 are available for order. Please DM or send an email to [email protected] to place your order before end of Wed 7 February.

With extra performance times and an array of different food stalls, (and no rain forecast) we’re looking forward to a busy, banging day. See you on Saturday! 😊😊

I’ve been craving xue cai (雪菜) or snow vegetables for ages. Couldn’t find it in any of the Asian supermarkets and so decided to make our own. It turns out it’s not so difficult. You can’t get the usual mustard green, xue li hong, here but choi sum or flowering mustard green is a good substitute.
Wash them thoroughly, leave to dry overnight and then chip them into small pieces. Salt and squeeze until liquid is coming out of them, leave in a sterilised jar with the liquid for a week, making sure to ‘burp’ the jar once a day. Then keep it in the fridge to be used in delicious noodle soups or stir-fry dishes - probably good for a month or two. It has a lovely mustard sour smell and flavour. Very good for your gut too.
Feeling accomplished, nostalgically satisfied and healthy 😊😊

Recreating one of the simplest but happiest meals we had, sitting on the pier with friends in Drøbak, Norway. All we had was a newspaper cone full of prawns, wedges of lemon and a great baguette loaf.
We’re lucky to have in Wiltshire who make excellent French baguettes (and Eccles cakes). Courgettes and beetroots were bestowed upon us by our lovely neighbour across the road. I’ve chargrilled and preserved the courgettes in olive oil & lemon juice with layers of garlic, wild oregano from our wildflower garden and dried chillies.
Simple, nourishing and utterly delicious

It’s nearly time for the Mid-Autumn festival celebrated by many East Asians around the world. Like the autumn festival, it’s a time to contemplate the changing of the seasons and be thankful for the rich harvests. When I was little, I knew it as the Moon festival. In Malaysia, children had brightly coloured cellophane lanterns in the shapes of birds, animals and mythical dragons or phoenixes. Lit candles were placed inside and the glowing lanterns were balanced precariously by a long bamboo stick on tree branches in the garden or bars on windows. Our parents chatted and played mahjong after a tasty dinner and we burnt our fingers playing with candles, matches and hot wax on the terrace.
Growing up, I learnt that chrysanthemums, crayfish and classical poems about the moon were all associated with the festival - and for those away from home, longing for family, friends and the past.
We’re looking forward to celebrating this special festival in Bristol Trinity Centre on Sunday, bringing artists, food makers and performers from the East Asian diaspora together to remember and share our heritage.
Hope you can join us. We’re there from 12.00-18.00.

When I was in primary school in Malaysia, every now and then I used to save up my daily tuckshop money for a week to be able to afford a packet of Penang rojak buah. That meant giving up a small 10 cents bowl of laksa every day, to buy a 50 cents rojak! 😬
The rojak man had his stall, attached to a bicycle outside the school gates. He had smartly slicked back hair and a nicely ironed buttoned shirt sleeve shirt.
I took in everything he did whilst preparing the food. Deftly, he cut up slices of cucumber, pineapple, unripe papaya, sengkuang (yam bean) and, importantly, green mango. Then he would put hae ko (prawn paste) and chilli paste in a metal bowl and whisk it up with the cut fruit and vegetables. Lastly he would take the key (to me) ingredient of a crunchy prawn fritter and break it into pieces and put the whole lot in a cone of banana leaf, wrapped in newspaper, sprinkle some sesame seeds over the top and poke a long skewer into the top to eat with. I looked forward to this special treat with such rapt anticipation. Giving up laksa for a week was really something for me…
The sour sharp mango, the crunchy veggies and crispy crackly prawn fritter in fishy, salty and sweet clingy rojak sauce - a delightful childhood memory.

We really enjoyed catering for a very special birthday lunch today
It’s not often we’re asked to make chilli crab and the, humungous, meaty, fresh supplied by were just the ticket. So happy to find a supplier who is so reliable with such a fantastic product and excellent customer service.
Also, the venue was ideal for an intimate family gathering with great kitchen facilities. Highly recommended!
Thanks very much for recommending us for the job - love that Malaysian chefs look out for each other.

It was a huge treat and privilege for Steve’s birthday to eat in Cartmel last week. It’s difficult to distill the experience to a few photos but these are some of the highlights of our four hour meal.
Chef paced the dinner really well, answering all our questions with patience, while preparing each of the fifteen courses fastidiously in front of us. Must also mention that the imaginative non-alcoholic drinks menu was much appreciated. Lovely to have infusions and cordials made from plants grown on the farm. Excellent tea selection too. It was so interesting to watch all the processes and then visit the following morning to see where much of the produce came from. It was also wonderful to look through the bookshelves of the development kitchen to see the influences and inspirations.
A meal and trip to treasure. I’ll tend our shiso plant gift with great care. 😊

We finally made it to after failing to get in last time we were in Manchester.
Absolutely delicious - all plated up beautifully to feed the eye. The Carlingford oysters were plump, juicy and salty. Flatbread with beef fat fully satisfied Steve’s recent craving for beef dripping on toast in a big way - only made better by Urfa chilli flakes.
Other highlight was the cold pork belly with tonnato, capers and glorious salty anchovies. We savoured every finger licking trace of salty butter with artichoke, scrap of tomatoey sardine and charcuterie. Yum, yum!
Our culinary holiday has gotten off to a good start :)

On our way to join for a Chinese themed arts event, in their series of monthly festivals celebrating the diverse East Asian communities in Bristol.
We have devised a simple traditional tea house menu to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival this month and my Malaysian Chinese heritage.
We have traditional bak zhang / zongzi rice dumplings, fried noodles and rice with a selection of sharing dishes - lion’s head meatballs, mapo tofu, smacked cucumber salad, cloud ear mushroom salad and herbal tea eggs. A selection of Chinese teas is available to complement the food.
There will be Asian art stalls and music playing making it a relaxed family afternoon.
See you there!

Ulam - gorgeous array of Asian herbs, vegetables and home grown calamansi for nasi ulam kerabu. These will be finely shredded and mixed with blue butterfly pea flower rice, served with curry for a birthday party this afternoon. A lot of work and totally worth it. Fresh, subtle flavours and a treat for the eyes.
