Acid Box Brighton Est. 2013
We showcase artists we love from all over the world to perform in Brighton. With a love for distortion and reverberation
we promote the music we love, mostly inspired by
styles & sub genres of alternative rock n roll
but predominantly a variety of garage surf-punk,
psychedelia and fuzz as well as forays into electronic and

world music. [email protected]

Co-founded by Detroit natives Rahill Jamalifard and Lenny Lynch, Habibi got its start in Brooklyn in 2011, earning early raves everywhere from Pitchfork and NME to All Things Considered and The New Yorker, who praised the band for infusing “the Colgate-white glisten of sixties-girl-group pop with an uncensored edge.”

Dreamachine, Habibi’s mesmerizing new record releasing on Kill Rock Stars, marks a major sonic evolution for the band, rising beyond the critically acclaimed five-piece’s garage rock roots to arrive at a singular swirl of analog and digital elements that underpin their search for spiritual and physical transcendence.
Produced by Tyler Love and longtime collaborator Jay Heiselmann and featuring MGMT multi-instrumentalist James Richardson, the collection draws on a mix of post-punk, experimental pop, and vintage disco, calling to mind Tom Verlaine, Diana Ross, Kate Bush, and Kim Deal, all filtered through the band’s shared love of Middle Eastern psych music. The songs here are their own distinct worlds, each an immersive quest in pursuit of something greater, and the band’s performances are relentless and hypnotic to match, driven by lush synthesizers, sinewy guitars, and a muscular rhythm section. The result is a record as fearless as it is enthralling, an alternatingly fierce and joyous work that ascends to new heights as it reckons with desire and escape, love and surrender, rebellion and reality.

Hailing from cosmopolitan London, the music of Karma Sheen merges Hindustani Classical, fuzzy 60s Rock à la Jimi Hendrix, and Sufi-inspired lyricism, deeply rooted in cultural heritage. Spearheaded by Sameer Khan, who's formally trained by a 600-year-old lineage of musicians from modern-day Pakistan, this group of multi-instrumentalists aims to bring timeless tradition to new realms. By daring to embrace the Hindustani format while drinking from retro aesthetics and resignifying it all with the avant-gardism of neo-psych, they create something both recognizable and new. Karma Sheen released their raga-infused debut album on October 13th, 2023, and the group became known for their captivating performances fuelled by a plethora of electrified folk instruments. They increasingly gained space in the live circuit, supporting established acts such as WITCH, Yin Yin, Dur-Dur Band, Derya Yildirim & Grup Simsek, Marcos Valle and Sarathy Korwar.

Sahra Halgan is an iconic artist from Somaliland, formerly a British protectorate in the Horn of Africa, and an independent country since 1991, although unrecognised by the international community. In the 1980s, during the war in reaction to the terrible repression of Siad Barré, the dictator of neighbouring Somalia, she earns her nickname “Halgan”, the fighter, and her songs win the hearts of an entire people forever. An improvised nurse at the front, defying tribal and family conventions, she sings to heal the wounded and encourage the fighters.

But the fratricidal fighting that marks the end of the war forces her into exile, and it is France that grants her political asylum. What follows is a life familiar to millions of uprooted people in Europe: discreet integration from below, raising a family, hard work... 20 hard years that take her away from music.

GIFT return!

New York rock quintet GIFT formed just before the COVID-19 pandemic and recorded their 2022 debut album Momentary Presence during its associated isolation. Thankfully, their music – a dizzying blend of early shoegaze, classic ‘90s alternative rock and even modern pop – quickly transcended that troubled time to prick up the ears of adventurous listeners both in the UK and the US.
Today, GIFT – vocalist/guitarist TJ Freda, multi-instrumentalists Jessica Gurewitz and Justin Hrabovsky, drummer Gabe Camarano and bassist Kallan Campbell – return with Wish Me Away, their first new song in the 18 months since their debut album and the first on new label Captured Tracks.
With its earworm guitar lines, propulsive rhythms, riveting vocals and mind-expanding sonics, Wish Me Away is the perfect sonic springboard from Momentary Presence to where GIFT are going next. It’s also a potent reminder that you can still preserve that twinkle in your eye even when you feel like everything’s slipping away.

Says Freda: “Wish Me Away is about giving into the feeling of everything slipping away. Just take it all away, put me out of my misery, wish me away. While this all seems daunting and sad, there’s a feeling of optimism in this song, holding on for dear life and refusing to give up hope.”

After almost losing a loved one, Freda found himself grappling with the fleeting nature of life. Wish Me Away ruminates on the the fear and freedom that can come from knowing it can all slip away. “The line 'wish me away’ kept coming up, as in, take me, not them”, he further notes.

** JUST ANNOUNCED **

That's right! We're bringing you the legendary shredders, The Mystery Lights to The Hope & Ruin.

The Mystery Lights story begins in 2004 in the small town of Salinas California when friends Michael Brandon and Luis Alfonso - whose shared fondness for groups like The Mc5, Velvet Underground, Dead Moon, and The Fall (just to name a few) - decided to join forces and craft their own brand of unhinged rock and roll. From there they spent the better part of 10 years touring relentlessly before migrating to Queens, New York in 2014. The buzz soon caught the attention of Daptone Records execs who were in the beginning stages of launching a new rock-centric imprint, Wick Records. Though a rock band at heart, the parallels to what Daptone Records had traditionally looked for in their Soul artists was undeniable. The release of their debut single “Too Many Girls” b/w “Too Tough to Bear” launched to mass critical fanfare.

After two years of break-neck, non-stop touring, the group settled back into Queens to prepare for their second full-length record, Too Much Tension! (May 2019). While keeping the hard-hitting approach of the first LP, Too Much Tension finds the group digging deeper into their well of eclectic influences, enriching their sound without echoing the past. Mixing the eerie, insistent synth sounds of groups like The Normal and Su***de, the energy and swagger of punk’s golden age, the pop sensibility of The Kinks, and the stark, deliberate ex*****on of Television - The Mystery Lights are taking their idiosyncratic brand of rock and roll to dizzying new heights.

After supporting Say She She back in March, Kit Sebastian return with their warm Turkish Psych-pop.

Friday 4th October
Dust
On Sale Friday 3rd May 10am

Their unique sounds weaves a psychedelic tapestry of global influences, vintage synths and melancholy élan from the beaches of Bahia to the streets of Istanbul and Paris. A joyous expression of vibrant grooves and sophisticated lyricism that transcends boundaries, borders and social-cultural preconceptions. Steeped in artistic references, from dusty records to world cinema, their new album Melodi represents a considered maturation of the psychedelic jazz-inflected sound that introduced Kit Sebastian to the world on debut album Mantra Moderne in 2019.
