MEET THE TEAM ⭐️

Tell us your name and a little bit about yourself!

My name is Jez, I’m currently the treasurer for the village hall. I’m in my early (ish) 50s and work for the NHS.

What made you want to become a committee member for Upperthong Village Hall?

I’ve been involved with the hall for many years, initially as a friend and for the last 6 years as a trustee. It’s a very rewarding role and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to join and be a part of something.

As you can see our team has a wide variety of people from different backgrounds and at different stages of life. If you’ve got any questions about joining the committee as a member or friend then drop us a direct message today.

MEET THE TEAM ⭐

I’m Judith and I’ve lived in Upperthong since 1981. I first joined the committee in 1993 when the Hall was first fully renovated as secretary.

What made you want to become a committee member for Upperthong Village Hall before becoming a friend?

Originally I wanted to ensure the viability and longevity of the hall that my children and others were able to enjoy in Cubs, Brownies birthday parties and other social occasions.

After I stepped down as Secretary, I remained as a friend, helping out when I could. After retiring I eventually rejoined the committee as Treasurer taking over from my daughter. I’ve stepped down back into a role as a friend of the Hall and help still where I can.

What’s your favourite thing about being a friend of the Hall?

I’ve enjoyed volunteering and developing different skills over the years. My background is mainly finance which helped as my years as secretary and treasurer. There’s a great sense of community spirit, friendship and enjoyment whilst being part of the Hall’s team.

⭐️

Whilst we’re always on the look out for committee members, we appreciate that term can be daunting! Our meet the team series aims to highlight that the team are a wide variety of people with different backgrounds and busy lives! If you feel you would be better suited as a ‘friend’ then get in touch.

We’d love to have your help in any way. Stay tuned for our next team member’s story in a few days!

🐣 Easter Makers Market at Upperthong Village Hall 🐣

Sunday 6th April, 11-3pm at the Hall!

Thank you to everyone who has enquired about a stall. Our markets are on a smaller scale this year so we’re pouring even more love and soul into them.

MEET THE TEAM ⭐️

I'm Gareth and the current chair of UVH. I live in Upperthong with my wife Eloise (who is also our Bookings Secretary) and young daughter, Juliette. I work as an Air Traffic Controller at Manchester Airport.

What made you want to become a committee member for Upperthong Village Hall?

I was originally brought in by my wife (who joined the committee before me) to change a light bulb that no one else could reach (I'm quite tall!). From there I got more involved as it just felt the right thing to do. It's good to give back to the local community and the village hall is really well used by local groups so its important to keep it going.

What’s your favourite thing about being a committee member of the Hall?

The people that I work alongside - the trustees and friends of the hall are a really good mix of people and its always fun working with them. Also I love it when I drive past the hall and there a lots of cars outside; usually an indicator of an busy art of yoga class, which is so nice to see!

Is there anything you’d say to someone considering joining the committee or becoming a friend of the Hall?

We all lead such busy lives these days but its important to give back too - the hall relies on the time given by volunteers and it really is a "use it or lose it" type situation. The time commitment is really not that much but very worthwhile.

MEET THE TEAM ⭐️

Hi I’m Liz, I’ve enjoyed living in Upperthong with my family and various animals for more than 20years. I have been part of the Village Hall team for 10 of those!

What made you want to become a committee member for Upperthong Village Hall?

I think the Hall is an amazing community space and venue and we are lucky to have her. I wanted to do my bit to look after her for future generations.

What’s your favourite thing about being a committee member of the Hall?

I love to be part of community events at the Hall. My favourite is our annual Christmas Carol concert which is always well attended and the start of for Christmas for me. There’s a great atmosphere helped along by the Upperthong school choir, Hd9 Band, Father Christmas visit, mulled wine & mince pies of course!

Is there anything you’d say to someone considering joining the committee or becoming a friend of the Hall?

Yes, please join us and help us to run the Hall and maintain it for the future!

The commitment from a time perspective is smaller than you might imagine we only meet as a team around every other month to oversee Hall usage and make decisions on expenditure. Above that any time you can volunteer will be much appreciated. The kind of tasks we share amongst the team includes various activities for example; rehanging curtains, showing people round, arranging quotes for maintenance work, stocking the bar for events. It can be as little or as much as you can commit to.

If you’d love to chat more, drop us a message 💻

You’ll see us talk about the ‘committee’ a lot but we thought it was time to put some faces to names.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be showcasing why our team members and even friends of the Hall are a vital part of the Hall’s story and what it means to them to be a part of that. ⭐️

The term committee can sometimes put people off - but we’re just a team, who have normal busy lives that come together every now and again to help keep the Hall alive for all to use. We’d love to meet some new people!

We hope you enjoy the series 😊

Thank you to everyone who replied regarding our makers in 2025. ⭐️

We are currently looking at programming two makers so far this year due to commitments on the committee as well as a boom in markets across the valley. This may change and as a committee we are always looking at ways to showcase our wonderful hall to everyone 🤍

Next stop Sunday 6th April, 11-3pm! Our Easter Market at Upperthong Village Hall. We’re on the look out for florists, Easter bakes, spring gifts and pop up food for all to enjoy. If you’d like to join us as a maker please email [email protected] 💻

Our makers may be small in numbers this year, but they’ll be mighty! If you’d also like to volunteer to help on them or future events then please do always get in touch. 🙏

Well, I was not expecting this to be the start to the new year.

As beautiful as it is, it is making our roads icy and dangerous. I took this photo this morning and as I type this, a blizzard of more snow is currently falling.

I've made the decision to cancel all classes this week and start again next week. Sometimes we have to acknowledge that we are not in control and have to go with the flow. I think the universe was telling me that I needed another week of rest (maybe we all do).

The good news is that if you hadn't got around to signing up for one of the courses yet, you can still do it. We will start next week. The booking links can be found here: https://linktr.ee/Rachel.InTheFlow

Happy New Year!

While the snow is simply delightful to see, it has prevented us from starting our first 6-week yoga course of the year.

The Monday block will now run from 13th Jan to 17th Feb (10:45-11:45am) at Upperthong Village Hall in Holmfirth.

Weather permitting, Wednesdays course will start this week as planned (8th Jan). Also at Upperthong Village Hall.

Booking is still available through https://bookwhen.com/intheflow o the link in my bio.

Apologies for any inconvenience. I know that you were all keen to get moving again after the festive season.

See you soon 😘
