1. For most of your music career you were based in London & Ibiza and played all over Europe. Which country do you think has influenced your music the most?

wow, it’s interesting how much i had to think about this one !

initially after moving from New Zealand to London in the late 90s for some reason i instantly felt compelled to teach myself how to mix records. i actually had no idea where to start musically. apart from being sent trance tapes throughout the mid 90s whilst at university from a friend raving in Holland, and following all the mainstream electronic sounds emerging, i had only ever been to the Gathering in Takaka a few years prior, and gigs in Dunedin (like Shapeshifter). i hadn’t even sampled much nightlife yet. but, i was warming immediately to the English humour, and ways of doing things.

i was also incredibly curious to experience the mystery of the rave scene that was still lingering and i had long since heard about. so within a few months, of course i dove head-first into the underground house and techno culture, that knew how to enjoy a dance floor together, as one extended family, whether it be in a squat party, railway arch rave, london club or festival alike. alongside the vibe, the love and the dancing, i was hooked by the breakbeat and house sounds that i was hearing,

this translated into the joy of hunting for white labels and promos in the many second hand and independent record shops across London. those heartfelt experiences on the dance floor, alongside the music that inspired me to dance ~ whether it was fun, deeply beautiful or had a powerful bass rhythm ~ were always what led me. many times, being unable to listen to records at the second hand shops, i simply chose by intuition, drawn in by the words, or of the style of the record cover. i found many gems this way. the first record i ever bought was DJ Sneak ‘You Can’t hid From Your Bud’ promo. i just liked the name.

it was also at this time that Ibiza influenced me dramatically (to my complete surprise) ~ in ‘99 around six months after arriving to London I took a trip to the Spanish isle on the advice of a kiwi friend who lived there (much to my resistance actually, having recently watched the horrendous ‘ ibiza uncovered’ series). there i experienced daytime clubbing for the first time outside of the festival vibe ~ Sundays @ Space, then onto the monday morning after party sessions at DC10 (with Jockey Club in between). i remember distinctly this guy who was playing a jambe for hours alongside the DJ at DC10. he had dishevelled tape on his worn-out hands, but he kept playing all the same. this relentless, percussive Spanish beat, the heat and the carefree nature of it all sounded deeply within my soul from that point on. i returned year after year to the energies of the island, those of which eventually drew me to live there a decade later.

this pure experience on Ibiza of dancing with the sun on my skin, out of the dark clubnights, smiling across the dancefloor to others enjoying the sounds, would then extend to London with sunday afternoon parties in disused art galleries, pub gardens, warehouse spaces, ex public toilet spaces, outdoor carparks and even forests across the creative city.

so ultimately it was all of these pivotal early experiences in the UK and Ibiza that inspired the essence of the sound i shared when i played. and really still to this day. for me it’s all about creating that feeling of uplifted togetherness once again, and presenting it in a playful way for others to enjoy.

2. Who is your favorite or most influential artist and why?

ooh that’s a tough one, i’ve had so many over the years across many genres, and for different aspects. i would say though, looking at my record collection, Derrick Carter is someone who has been an influence to me musically all the way through ~ as i always dipped back to him for that jackin’ Chicago house sound, reminding me of the cheeky, playful aspect one can find within house music.

in more recent years i’ve been inspired by Delano Smith’s productions and DJing, with his incredible gift to sashay between that deep sultry bass-expanding house and a raw groove-driven techno track.

and without a doubt i have to credit the legend known as Kerri Chandler. his longstanding meticulous, respectful approach to creating quality sounds in whatever he does; yet still being able to express it with a fun, upbeat and fresh attitude with productions and DJ sets that harmoniously take the dancer on a journey through all genres of house and techno.

3. If you could play in any club in the world, which one would you choose?

My ultimate choice would be outside in nature, on an island at the beach, a spontaneous party… but if i had to choose, even though it’s twenty years on now from the original, the vibe is still there ~ DC10 in the garden in the late afternoon heading towards dusk :)
