Bratton Church Institute

Bratton Church Institute Versatile village hall venue in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside. Bratton is within easy reach of Westbury, Frome, Warminster and Trowbridge.

BRATTON CHURCH INSTITUTE is a charming, late Edwardian building with many original features. It is situated in the beautiful and historic village of Bratton, nestled below the edge of Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire near the famous Westbury White Horse. GETTING HERE
Tyning Lane is in the middle of the village of Bratton adjacent to the B3098 just 4 miles from Westbury. Westbury is served by main lin

e trains from London and is less than half an hour from the main A303 route from London. Bath , Chippenham and Bradford on Avon are slightly further afield. There is a small public car park near the hall and on-street parking is available. FACILITIES
The Institute was extended and refurbished in 2009, meaning that it enjoys a mix of old charm and some modern facilities. Access is by two small flights of steps from the road to the main entrance door. Disabled/pram access is via a purpose-built ramp to the side entrance. The building sits within an extensive, level, plot which can be used to put up a sizeable marquee, gazebos etc. The Institute building comprises a hall, a meeting room, kitchen and toilets. The village pub (The Duke) is just across the road. THE HALL
The hall is accessed from the entrance lobby by two sets of wooden doors and measures 11.8m x 6.7m. There are attractive bay windows at each end, one overlooking the garden and the other overlooking Tyning Lane. There is a characterful vaulted ceiling and wooden floor. The hall can accommodate circa 120 people (circa 90 seated). There is direct access from the Hall to the extensive garden. There are tables and chairs available for use in the Hall and there is a piano. KITCHEN
There is a small, but well-equipped kitchen with a double sink and drainer, separate sink for hand washing, larder fridge, second fridge if required, microwave, electric kettles, urn, toaster, cooker with a double oven. There is dinner and tea crockery, glassware, cutlery, tablecloths and tea towels. For larger catered events, we have made use of refrigerated trailer hire, with the trailer stationed outside the building. GARDEN
The level garden measures 36 x 22.5m and is laid to lawn. It is possible to erect a sizeable marquee within this area, thereby making extended use of the Institute building. The garden can be reached through the Institute or via gated entry points around the front and rear of the main Institute building. There are hedges on three sides, a small wooden pergola and a sizeable patio area just outside the main building (measuring 8 x 6m). THE ORATORY ROOM
This is situated in the 2009 extension at the rear of the Institute building and can be hired with the Hall or independently. The Oratory measures 5.8 x 4.8m. The room has a large feature window overlooking the rear garden area. There are 16
upholstered chairs available for use in this room, wjhich is suitable for committee meetings, or as an ante-room for the main Hall. TOILETS
The toilets are in the 2009 extension and are of an excellent modern standard.

☆ Plant Sale in May, led by Lucy Ellis and her dedicated team.

☆ Church Fete in June, a true village effort enjoyed by so many.

☆ Ride and Stride, where VOLUNTEERS raise funds for the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust and St James Church.

☆ Christmas Bazaar, brought to life by the BCI Committee.

These events wouldn’t be possible without you. Thank you for your dedication and hard work—your contributions make all the difference!

Thank you to St James Church, Bratton Bellringers!

Today we hear from Dusty Millier.

"The church at Bratton is nestled in the combe and off the beaten track. A beautiful building with six bells, these were once described as "five bells and a bucket." However, during the refurbishment of the bells about five years ago, they were retuned, and St James the Great is now blessed with a peal of bells that are very tuneful and ring out for every Sunday Service.

We have a very loyal and capable team of ringers, and we regularly ring a "Devon Peal" before a Sunday morning Service.

Bell ringing is an ancient art that has remained unchanged for some 400 years. If you would like to take that history forward into the future and be part of an evolving team of ringers, please contact Dusty Millier for more information."

Thank you to all our Bellringers!

Celebrating Our Volunteers! Today it's St James Church Flower Arranging Team

At St James Church, we’re fortunate to have a dedicated group of ladies who volunteer their time and talent to arrange beautiful floral displays each week.

They also work their magic for special occasions throughout the year, including Christmas, Easter, and Harvest Festival.

A delightful highlight is the two “elderly” bikes, lovingly adorned with flowers, proudly displayed for Ride and Stride weekend each September.

Their creativity and commitment brighten our church and bring joy to the community.

If you have a passion for flower arranging, why not join them? Details are on the Church Noticeboard!

To see more photos of these wonderful displays head on over to St James Church, Bratton.

Village Halls Week! Celebrating our volunteers!

Today we spotlight the Bratton PCC.

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) plays a vital role in the Church of England, ensuring the parish thrives both spiritually and practically. Acting as a corporate body, a charity, and the parish's executive committee, the PCC oversees the church's well-being, finances, and mission. Impressively, this dedicated team is entirely made up of volunteers.

The Chairperson, typically the Vicar or Rector as part of their role, is joined by two elected Churchwardens, a Treasurer, a Secretary, and additional committee members whose number depends on the Church Electoral Roll.

The PCC meets quarterly, tackling responsibilities with commitment and care.

This year, in line with a six-year cycle, all members of the Electoral Roll will renew their applications. The Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM), where key elections and updates occur, will take place at 7:30 PM on 22nd April at Bratton Church Institute.

The PCC’s work truly embodies community-driven devotion!

This week, we are highlighting some of the dedicated volunteers associated with the BCI and St. James Church in Bratton.

**The Monday Gang**

The Monday Gang has been a cornerstone of St. James Church for 40 years. This dedicated group of retired men and women work hard to maintain the churchyard and its surrounding areas.

Their contributions extend beyond tending to the graves; they also clear streams, repair walls, and restore the verges along Church Road, ensuring that everything is kept in excellent condition.

However, it's not all work and no play. At eleven o'clock, they take a break for coffee, doughnuts, and a good chat.

Their tireless efforts make the churchyard a well-cared-for and welcoming space for the community, transforming St. James into not just a place of worship but also a testament to their commitment and dedication.

Thank you to the Monday Gang and to all our volunteers!

Bratton Village is fortunate to support two church communities: St James Church, Bratton, and Bratton Baptist Church. These establishments play an active role in village life and its annual calendar of events and whether you're a churchgoer or not, it's essential to protect our assets.

With that in mind, our Parish will soon begin the process of selecting a new vicar for St James Church, and we would love to hear your thoughts on how this important role can best serve the community.

We will be holding a drop-in afternoon at Bratton Church Institute, where you can share your ideas on how we can enhance the church's presence in the village and keep its ministry fresh and engaging.

Refreshments will be available, so please pop in and have a chat with us.
