A slightly different assignment today as I had the honour to conduct a funeral service at the Chapel of Rest at Jackson Family Funeral Directors in Malvern. The gentleman was the oldest person whose funeral I've officiated at (97!) and was immensely proud of his Welsh heritage. Music included Calon Lân, Myfanwy and Yma O Hyd. My lapel badge matched the flag on the coffin - the standard of Owain Glyndwr. There was also the poem, "And Death Shall Have No Dominion" read by Dylan Thomas (recording obviously). My DNA is only 7% Welsh (on my maternal side), but I loved hearing the Treorchy Male Voice Choir and Yma O Hyd was stirring...

This is my friend, Chris Hopkirk - https://www.mindfulness.uk.com . Yesterday, I had the great pleasure of listening to Chris do a superb ten minute talk at TOP Networking Worcestershire sharing some of his personal experiences around mental health. It was honest, authentic, engaging and real. Chris is currently channelling his passion for mental health and well being in the workplace into a business that is helping other businesses help their employees be more resilient in today's changing world. If you're a business owner looking to serve their teams in this way, Chris is offering a great Mental Health & Wellbeing Insights report.
Last week, I had the privilege of delivering a eulogy for a lovely young man: sadly, he struggled with his mental health and took his own life aged just 34.
Looking after the mental health of your workforce isn't just good for your business, it's the right thing to do.

When I was studying for my Diploma in Funeral Celebrancy with Civil Ceremonies Ltd, I had to visit a Crematorium and write about it. Having been to a friend's funeral there, I visited the The Vale Crematorium at Evesham and was hugely impressed by the professionalism and respect shown by the team - it's also a lovely chapel in a great location. I was there again today and had the privilege of conducting the funeral of a lovely older gentleman with a wicked sense of humour. Great to work with Adam and the team at The Vale and also with Amie and the team at Jackson Family Funeral Directors

Last week, I received an enquiry to ask if I would be able to deliver a eulogy at a wake in a pub. Today, it was an absolute honour to be at The Brewers Arms Worcester to pay tribute to a young man, much loved by his friends, and gone far too soon. Because of the number of people, I spoke outside: one of the advantages of having a voice that carries I suppose! It was very humbling to hear some of the feedback I was given, and such an immense privilege to be able to serve in this way. I was asked to dress a little more informally so no tie!

Music has always been a big part of my life. When I was younger, tuning in to the chart show on Radio One every Sunday and watching Top of the Pops on TV Thursday were fixtures of my week. Music also plays a huge role in bidding farewell to loved ones. I've put together a top 10 list of funeral music choices in the UK, each with its own special meaning. From ballads to iconic wartime standards, these songs express love, loss, and remembrance. You might be surprised at the Top of the Funeral Pops. Can you guess what's Number One in the charts. What do you think? What would you have at your funeral? Which songs would you pick for your funeral?...

I was recently asked to read this poem at a funeral, It's an excerpt from a longer version of the poem, "Let Me Go", by Christina Rossetti, who also wrote the words for the carol "In the Bleak Midwinter".

When I come to the end of the roadAnd the sun has set for meI want no rites in a gloom filled roomWhy cry for a soul set free. Miss me a little, but not for longAnd not with your head bowed lowReme…

As a Celebrant, I'm often asked to read poetry. This isn't one that comes up in Funerals or Weddings, but is rather appropriate for the New Year. Here's a little Tennyson on Tuesday:

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light:
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Ring out the grief that saps the mind
For those that here we see no more;
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.

Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.

Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes
But ring the fuller minstrel in.

Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.

Ring out old shapes of foul disease;
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.

Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.
