In a significant step towards enhancing football development in Grenada, Marlon Glean, the President of the Grenada Football Association (GFA), recently met with Yasser Al Misehal, the President of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation. This meeting marks a pivotal moment for Grenadian football, as collaborative opportunities to enhance the sport at various levels are explored.

One of the highlights of their discussions was the upcoming referees' workshop, scheduled to take place in Grenada from January 3–5, 2025. This workshop will be facilitated by experienced FIFA refereeing instructors from Saudi Arabia, providing a valuable platform for local officials to improve their skills and knowledge.

Glean and Al Misehal also delved into technical support avenues for players and coaches, including the potential sharing of resources, strategies, and best practices to bolster talent development in Grenada. By tapping into Saudi Arabia's extensive expertise in football management and player development, the GFA aims to provide its coaches with expert insights that can be translated into more effective training programs for aspiring footballers.

Another exciting prospect discussed was the possibility of Grenadian players having opportunities to play in the prestigious and fast-growing Saudi Pro League. Such exposure would provide young players with invaluable international experience, potentially paving the way for their professional careers. Playing in one of the top leagues in the region could foster talent development within Grenada, inspiring a new generation of football stars.

The meeting proved fruitful, and as these initiatives take shape, they have the potential to transform the landscape of football in Grenada, leading to greater successes on and off the pitch.

The Grenada Football Association (GFA) successfully completed a 5-day FIFA Referee Assistance Program (RAP) course held at the FA's Secretariat from December 5-9, 2024. This intensive training program was facilitated by a team of renowned FIFA experts, including Javier Santos (FIFA Referee Development Officer), Dianne Ferreira-James (FIFA Technical Instructor), and Kelesha Antoine (FIFA and Concacaf Referee Fitness Instructor).

The FIFA RAP course is designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of referees, assistant referees, and referee assessors. The course covered a wide range of topics, including the latest updates to the Laws of the Game, practical on-field training, fitness assessments, and theoretical sessions on match analysis and decision-making.

"We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to have this event once again in Grenada," said Carl Lee, General Secretary of the Grenada Football Association. "This course is a testament to our commitment to developing world-class refereeing standards and ensuring the integrity of the game at all levels. By investing in the education and training of our match officials, we are not only improving the quality of our local competitions but also positioning Grenada as a hub for referee development in the region."

The course attracted a diverse group of participants, including referees, assistant referees, and referee assessors from across Grenada's football ecosystem. The attendees were put through rigorous training sessions, both on the field and in the classroom, to enhance their technical and tactical skills, as well as their physical fitness and decision-making abilities.

"The FIFA Referee Assistance Program has been an invaluable experience for our match officials," said Sheldon Carmichael, Referee Officer at the Grenada Football Association. "The expertise and guidance provided by the FIFA instructors have been instrumental in elevating the standards of refereeing in Grenada. We are confident that the knowledge and skills gained during this course will be applied on the field, ensuring fair and consistent officiating in our local competitions."

The successful completion of the FIFA RAP course is a significant milestone for the Grenada Football Association, as it reaffirms the organization's commitment to player development and the overall growth of the sport in the country. By investing in the education and training of match officials, the GFA is not only ensuring the integrity of the game but also creating a pathway for aspiring referees to reach the highest levels of the sport. The FA encourages anyone interested in becoming a referee to contact the Secretariat.
