DEBT LEFT BY THE BRITISH COLONISERS FOR KWAME NKRUMAH TO PAY.

We have often been told about money left by the British at the time Ghana gained its independence. The story goes that there were huge sums of money left by the British colonial thieves when they were being kicked out of Ghana. Several figures have been bandied about most of them without sources to verify the information.

What we have never been told is how much debt was left for Nkrumah to pay at the time of independence. In the attached, you will find the public debt of the Gold Coast from 1900 to Independence and beyond.

Notice that by 1956, a year before independence, the total debt was 22,650,000 pounds made up of 19,470,400 pounds internal debt and 3,180,000 pounds external debt. The Gold Coast had sinking funds of up to 2,392,100 pounds in foreign securities leaving a net outstanding debt of 20,258,300 pounds.

In today's currency, this will amount to £432,686,300.08 Pounds. At the current exchange rate of £1 to GHC 20, this would be almost 8.7 Billion Ghana Cedis.

We'll experience party cloudy conditions with sunshine across the country this morning to early afternoon.
However, there's a rain storm located at Eastern part of Nigeria moving westerly. It's likely to hit Upper East and other parts of the Northern sectors from 4pm. The other storm activities south of Nigeria is likely to move to seaward but if it maintains it's current westerly movement, it'll hit VR around 1pm and Tema/Accra around 3pm. Maximum temperature will be 31*C.

Trust in the Electoral Commission (EC), judiciary, and law enforcement has plunged to unprecedented depths, as outlined in the most recent Afrobarometer survey.
The data, gathered between 1999 and 2022, illustrates a worrisome decline in public faith in these vital institutions.
The EC, formerly boasting a trust rating of 75% in 2005, now only garners the confidence of 33% of Ghanaians. This signifies a substantial decrease from its initial trust level of 63% in 1999.
Likewise, the judiciary has experienced a notable erosion of public trust. In 2005, 62% of participants expressed faith in the legal system.
