Even the brightest blues need a rest sometimes. This scruffy Blue Jay, with missing feathers on its face, perfectly mirrors those tired days when we all need a quiet perch. (Like today for me)

I’m also loving the soft background that lets this moment stand still.

Kingfishers are some of the most elusive birds to capture—quick movements, tiny size, and always on the hunt make them a true challenge for wildlife photographers. This may not be ‘the shot’ I’ve been chasing, but it’s one of my better attempts at freezing this incredible bird in action. Every encounter brings me closer!

By the late 19th century, Trumpeter Swans disappeared from Eastern Canada due to hunting and habitat loss. Thanks to conservation efforts in the mid-1980s, they made a comeback in Ontario and are now thriving! These beautiful birds are a sign of healthy wetlands and have helped Hamilton and Burlington earn recognition as Bird Friendly Cities.

However, they still face human-induced threats. To protect them:

1. Don’t approach nests or young swans.

2. Avoid feeding them – many people think feeding bread or other human food helps, but it can actually cause serious health issues like Angel Wing, which deforms their wings and stops them from flying. These birds need to forage naturally to stay healthy.

3. Be mindful when fishing—barbed hooks and lead weights can be fatal.

Let’s help keep them safe!

Early mornings at Grindstone Marsh =Pure bliss.

The birds singing, the crisp air, and the incredible wildlife – it’s like nature’s own little paradise. And even if I spot any cool birds or wildlife, this place is just so beautiful that it’s impossible not to walk away with at least a few great photos.

Starting my day here just feels right – but honestly, leaving to head home for work is the hardest part! I’m so thankful for spots like this that make me forget about the clock and just soak in the moment. I’m also pretty excited to see what this area looks like once the leaves start changing colours. 😁

This great egret’s patience is unmatched. 🦢 They stand still for long periods, waiting for the perfect moment to strike with their sharp beaks, spearing fish, frogs, and even insects.

I’ve never seen a before!

At first, I thought it was a , but I don’t think mongoose are here. Anyway, I did a little research and learned that minks are semi-aquatic creatures, who thrive in both water and on land. They’re excellent swimmers and often hunt for fish, frogs, and other small animals along riverbanks. 🌿

Thankfully demand for mink fur has decreased in recent years due to shifting public attitudes towards animal welfare and the rise of synthetic alternatives.

Unfortunately though, fur farming still exists, though it’s banned and/or heavily regulated in some countries!
