Inspired by my new environment, my work depict only those 245 species of butterfly that are found in Hong Kong. I explore the elevation of ‘sugar art’ beyond the edible and momentary and show another facet of Hong Kong’s beauty not known by many. Building upon the ethos of Ming dynasty sugar painting, in which molten sugar replaces ink, I combine traditions of sculpture, ink painting and icing decoration, to produce object d’art, encased in resin, that both protects and cherishes the brittle beauty of the art form.

After 4months of super intense work this is finally done. Many people think of Hong Kong as a concrete jungle. Yet most of the territory consists of actual jungle and country parks. After moving from the city to Sai Kung, I was delighted to discover a great profusion of butterflies, often pulsing around single plants like living bouquets.
