Big day in India today 🇮🇳🪷. I watched some of the news coverage on the national channels and I don’t know how people don’t get epileptic fits from all the flashing banners they keep throwing across the tv screens 🤦‍♀️. The loud commentary, the blazing banners in the brightest of colours flashing the poll numbers next to an ad for ‘Ramraj Innerwear vests, briefs and trunks’ - it’s all on steroids 🥴. My eyes need saving.

Ever wondered why you can’t access rare or ‘special’ flowers at your local florist? Accessibility is the primary reason, the other being supply and demand:

1️⃣ Only few growers deal in specialist flowers and batches are limited, catering to florists who specialise in events.

2️⃣ Customers tend to not buy them - flowers are expensive and consumers tend to buy what they know; very rarely will they spend on a flower they’re not familiar with.

This Cloni Pon-Pon ‘Igloo’ Rananculus is an example of what you’d find only from a wholesaler (if you’re lucky!). This was the first and only time I was able to buy a bundle, and it wasn’t even the best 🥲.

Keep it simple, make it stunning ✨. Who needs a dozen blooms when two can do the trick just fine? In all my years of experience in floristry, I’ve learnt that sometimes all you need are just TWO ingredients to create floral fabulousness. The vibrant orange ‘Charlotte’ with the fragrant purple Glory of the Sun (Leucocoryne Adnes) fits the bill.

Gladiolus Melba Peach😘.
When I saw these in the flower market, I gasped audibly😍. I have never seen in this shade before and I grabbed it without even thinking about how I was going to style them. Gladioli have a comparatively long stem life but aren’t very popular with florists because of customers’ perceived notion of it being a ‘cheap’ flower. Well, more for me.

Phalaenopsis orchid in a divine lime green colour😍. When using into floral arrangements, we often gravitate towards more vibrant hues. The reason being that green tones can easily blend in with the surrounding greens and foliage in the flower arrangement. Did you know that there is such a thing as a florist sunflower? These are specialist sunflowers that have been bred specifically to not produce pollen, making them ideal for bouquets as the flowers won’t dust homes and tabletops with yellow, powdery pollen. Plus, they're perfect for people who suffer from allergies.

Is it spring yet? 😍 It's currently ranunculus season (commercially) and these babies are all over the wholesale markets. These have come all the way from growers in the Netherlands, so I'm assuming the floristry markets in Europe and the US are flooded with them as well.

In India, I've only ever found cut ranunculus once in the Mumbai wholesale flower market, but unfortunately they weren't fresh and I've never seen them since 😔.

Do you love delicate flowers but find that they tend to not last long? Pick the eustoma! 🌸

Eustoma (aka lisianthus) is a rare flower when it comes to longevity. Flowers that are delicate and have thin, delicate stems tend to not last long when cut. Eustoma is an exception and if treated right, can last for a week. They are a staple with florists and can be used in so many ways.

Blown away by the beauty of this gradient eustoma I came across a few weeks ago -its called 'tea-coloured' eustoma, though I can't really see the resemblance 🙈.

How to care for cut dahlias🌼 ⁠

Cut dahlias have a short cut-life - about 3 to 4 days in temperate weather. To extend the cut-life of this gorgeous flower, do the following: ⁠
1. Make a horizontal cut at the bottom of the stem. ⁠
2. Place the cut ends in 2 to 3 inches of very hot water. ⁠
3. Leave the stems in the hot water for at least an hour. ⁠
4. Transfer the flowers to a vase filled with fresh room temperature water.⁠
5. Post this treatment, your gorgeous dahlia should last for 4-6 days!🌼⁠

The easiest way for a novice to arrange flowers at home? 🌿

1️⃣ Treat your flowers with love! Follow basic cut-and-care steps such as cutting stems at a slant, removing leaves, using a clean vase, etc., to ensure your flowers last longer. (Check out the blog post on our website for tips to make your flowers last longer)
2️⃣ Gather a bunch of vases of varying height or empty glass bottles, ideally with a narrow opening (wider the mouth of the vase, more the number of flower stems required).
3️⃣ Divide your flowers by colour and cut them into varying heights before plonking them into vases.
4️⃣ Arrange all the vases together on a table or disperse them around the house to brighten up corners.

Did you know that colour is just one of the differentiators amongst flowers?🌿

For example:
🌹The pink Revival rose has a comparatively smaller blossom compared to other varieties. This rose is best used for bud arrangements and bridal bouquets rather than events.
🌹 The gorgeous Jumilia rose (shown above), with its white blossom and pink-tinted petals, is one of the longest lasting single-stem roses available in India. Few other varieties last as long. This is why in a mixed bouquet of roses, some colours tend to last longer than others.

How do I know all this? Copious amounts of testing and note-taking! No one talks about these things... While a childhood spent seeped in gardens has helped (along with my training at the London Flower School), most of my learning has come from talking to growers and experimenting with flowers. Maybe one day I'll put a book together with all of my notes 🌿

Loving our cutie-patootie bud vase arrangements🤩🌿.

They're the perfect addition to your dining table when entertaining guests over Sunday brunch or to brighten up your favourite reading nook, filled with your books and comfy reading chair 📚🌿. Personally, I like to deck out my dining table on with friends, where I have flowers jostling for space with the food 😅.
