Bringing Indigenous Knowledge into teaching at Tuvalu’s schools

There is increasing recognition across the Pacific about the importance of passing on the unique local knowledge systems that have developed within a cultural context to the next generation. Opening the forum, Dr Seula from the University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Institute of Education (IoE) explained
‘…there is no way forward without our past. .. our culture, our language, our traditional knowledge system must travel with us to the Future”.

Officials from the Ministry of Education Human Resources & Development (MEHRD) and the Tuvalu Australia Partnership for Quality Education (TAPQE) participated in the forum, together with representatives from Kiribati, Niue, Marshall Islands, FSM and Tonga. Each Pacific nation has its own traditional knowledge system and the forum provided an opportunity for sharing stories and ideas of how this Indigenous Knowledge can be integrated into the national curriculum.

MEHRD is committed to the inclusion of Indigenous Knowledge into the revision of the Tuvalu school curriculum currently underway. With the help of the University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Institute of Education (IoE) and TAPQE, in 2025 MEHRD plans to develop curriculum content and related posters, videos, audio recordings, and a set of games for primary school students, based on these Indigenous counting systems.
TAPQE will work closely with MEHRD to make sure Indigenous Knowledge is embedded in our children’s learning! 🌟
